This photograph is one in a large series covering part of the 2006-2007 bushfires in Victoria (Gippsland in particular). This one was taken on December 14 (at around 2pm which was over 6hrs before twilight!) on the central Gippsland plains. Early afternoon saw the region plunge into darkness and rain begin to fall – black ash/mud rain fell from massive pyrocumulus clouds overhead generated from the intense heat and the increased localised atmospheric instability from the fires – Sale actually reported just under 3mm. / This particular day was the most devastating during the season which saw the south divide complex burn for over 60days ! Sadly 1 life was lost at Seaton on this actual afternoon – about 25 km’s from where i took this photograph, numerous houses were lost through Toongabbie, Cowwar wier and Seaton as eyewitness reported walls of fire over 100ft high coming over the hills at the back of their properties. Emergency radio broadcasts filled the airwaves as did emergency vehicles on the roads. During this devastating drama there was the fantastic feeling of ‘aussie mateship’ as all around ppl were offering whatever they had to help strangers and locals alike – a day i will never forget ! more of my bushfire related photography may be viewed by clicking on the preview image below / *

Bardi ‘Saltwater’ people at England’s most famous sacred site Stonehenge: Photo: © Julian Andrews. Irrgil / Marrga is a words used by the Bardi ‘Saltwater’ people meaning boomerang & shield. The Bardi people are from the Dampier Peninsula situated around 200 kilometres north-east of Broome, Western Australia. Even to this day Bardi people continue to practice their culture and to live this way of life. The Aos Sidhe (pronounced “ess shee”), are a powerful, supernatural race comparable to the fairies or elves of other traditions. / They live in an invisible world that coexists with the world of humans. / The Gaelic Otherworld is seen as being closer at the times of dusk and dawn, therefore this is seen as a time special to the Aos Sidhe, as are some of the festivals such as Samhain and Midsummer. The Aos Sidhe are generally described as stunningly beautiful, though they can also be terrible and hideous. I cursed myself for walking too deep into the forest and missing seeing the sunset from the view point high on the hillside like i intended, but the evening rays brought colour to the forest like I wouldnt have imagined. / The forest is very much still in green, but the backlighting from the sunset has given such warmth to the leaves. As it was so late in the day, this is a 1 second exposure. other photos from the forests around my home / / Loki’s Forest
In life as well as fishing it’s all about the journey! / As the sunrise burned through the fog early Sunday morning, on Clear Lake near Hunstville, Ontario, two fishermen enthusiastically set out for their favourite fishing spot… / This shot was as a result of an early morning walk in / August 2008 in the fog: part planning, part serendipity. Rural northern Boulder County, Colorado Honest to God above, this was utterly amazing….I can’t really find the wards to describe the whole scene to you all but I will try my best. I had to handhold this, along with the other shots to come, my knee is totally kaput so using a tripod was pretty much out of the question, however that isn’t the only reason…as we were shooting last evening, the lightning was all over the place, and well there were times when I wanted to grab it and try, but thought better of it lol Tripods make for great Lightning conductors! lol The clouds were just insane, and I mean really crazy, this storm went severe dropping reports of funnel clouds to the north east of us and hail as well. It passed over our heads, but sure made for some utterly incredible atmospheric shots! So you take that, a Sunflower field the size of a small state, the sunset, a country road, and the foothills and mountains as a backdrop, and friends, you have quite a scene you will NEVER forget! Hope ya all like it! / —-John Minolta 5D / Minolta 18-70mm / CPL & ND4
