Being the (current) most popular piece of art on RB, this will obviously get thousands of views…so I want to use this little space to share with you all the most important thing I know about landscape photography… I read it in a blog by Marc Adamus…. and it is… That you will take the best photos in places you are familiar with. I have found this to be 9000% true. I’ve probably shot 100+ sunsets on this beach and all my best photos are from this beach. This was a 7 minute exposure taken at 11:47 midnight. I had shot this fence a lot and knew when(tide) and how( comp) it looked the best. I noticed that the clouds were coming over Cape Town and thought that a long enough exposure would make it look like the clouds were exploding from the lights of Cape Town. I set up my tripod, composed the shot and took some ISO1600 F4 shots to get an idea of what exposure time will be necessary. It needed to be longer than 5 mins to get the right look from the clouds, but not much longer because the peak waves got to the tripods legs and could ruin the photo. I tried over and over…took about an hour, and in the end it was 436 seconds, F9, ISO200. The Original is brown and purple…I colored the photo using WB settings from the RAW tool…. Once again. This isn’t sunset, it’s Cape Town, South Africa, about 50km across the bay….taken from Strand at midnight. Those lights to the left is Simon’s Town. All proceeds from sales of this photo will go to the art for aid group….so please buy people…very generous considering that I’m a poor student. And this proves beyond a doubt that the photographer makes the photo and not the camera… Taken with a EOS 400D (rebel xti), kit 18-55mm lens and a circular polarizer filter…..

When the conditions are right where I live we experience the wonderful phenomena of sea fog. The first one I experienced was when I was “in between” cameras. I was devastated! I have been hoping ever since that we would get another one… I peered out the window today while I was on the phone and saw that today was the day! I had to make my apologies to my friend on the phone – a girl has to get her priorities right – and happily spent the next two hours snapping, with my young boys as my photography assistants. The title of this piece is inspired by one of my favourite scenes in Lord of the Rings. Gandalf the mighty wizard gives his life to ensure the freedom of his friends… and so my friend today gave to me the same gift of freedom as I hastily hung up the phone to explore my sea fog.

It fascinates me how creation myths and evolutionary thought seem to converge around the possibility of a spark such as this igniting life. / Taken off the “Balcony” – a beautiful section of coastal cliffs in Royal National Park just south of Sydney Australia during a spectacular storm. I’ve shot about half a dozen storms here this year. The others all drifted out to sea which made them nice and safe and easy to photo so I got lulled into a false sense of security with this one. It decided to head straight up to where I was photographing and at one stage I had to hide under a rock overhang with bolts going off all around – deeply scary but wouldn’t have missed it for anything – a magic night of biblical proportions I can tell you and one I’ll never forget. This shot has a bit of a story behind it, I was with a group of fellow photographers on what we call a Ferry Hop expedition. Basically we spend the day or most of it, riding the Sydney Ferries to different destinations taking photos on board and where ever we disembark. On this particular outing a few of my fellow photographers and I decided to issue a challenge, walk up to perfect strangers and ask for to take their photo. This was only the second person I ask after the challenge was issued. This lovely gentleman had a great face, a lovely white and gray beard and looked just the part for a nautical theme. As it happens when I approached him, we were nearing a replica tall ship and the Darling Harbour light house (scene in the background). Well all the elements just fell into place, and I only took two shots but I knew I had bag a great image, I thanked the Sea Captain as I’ve now called him, showed him the image and let him travel the rest of the trip in peace. I’m considering entering this in the portrait section of the Real Photography compeition, while it may be a little unconventional, it’s one of my favourite portraits (and most the others my wife won’t let me post as they are pictures of her).

Carved By Nature’s Wrath / The 12 Apostles, Victoria Following a day of torrential rain and gale force winds, the sun shone momentarily, lighting up the moody sky, before plunging the rugged coastline into complete darkness. As night falls, a solitary waterfall is all that remains of the passing storms, returning the much needed rain to the swollen seas of the shipwreck coast. Last light again, looking South from the Causeway at Victor Harbor along the Esplanade across the ocean. Quite dark and brooding but available lighting was troublesome here. Canon 400D, HDR and adapted in Photomatix 2.5. Best Viewed large.

The Wreck of the SS Dicky, Caloundra 2am start yesterday morning meant I was up at Dicky beach in time to see the sun rise…..had such a great time I didn’t make it to college, soz guys….next week :) Canon 5D with 16-35mm at 21mm, f/16, 1/2 second, ISO 50, two Lee ND Grey grad filters, 0.9 and 0.6. Tripod, cable release, and totally wet daks. This image has been well received at OE and I’ve had three people contact me from there, regarding buying it. Two bought mounted prints, and one bought a card through RB. April 2008 and June 2008. I am occasionally asked how I start the crazy pics :) This is my concept sketch for “Sea Creature” The good-natured sea creature gazes benignly at the nervous Grinners as they swim past, in their usual backwards style. The poison blisters on the Grinners’ backs were fully inflated, as though they expected trouble. Observers in the underwater viewing deck, were making notes. Temperatures had risen alarmingly in the Nglishoop sea and creatures like the Blister-bodied Grinners were stressed as a result of these changes and their response was to remain in defence mode. This was costing them valuable energy though, as it was usually reserved for short fight or flight occasions. They were aware, in their remarkably evolved brains, that something was not right, but nothing in their evolutionary coding had prepared them for anything like this. These brightly coloured underwater imps, were a critical part of the reef biome and the researchers were worried. Although they were terrestrial beings, the observers knew that their lives were inextricably bound to events that occurred in this underwater world. Time was running out…
