Now this is cool… How it is done!
by GerryMac*Here is another way of viewing my work, it is in a list format and displays the number of comments I have for each Photo… “Click Here….
Here is another way of viewing my work, it is in a list format and displays the number of comments I have for each Photo… Click Here… This uses a combination of two existing functions already found in RB, Tagging and the Search function. Here is how to do it….. 1. For this to work and for it to display just your work you need to come up with a unique tag. For example your first name and birth date jim28071977 2. This unique tag is entered as a new tag into all existing photos, writings, T’s, etc and add to all future works. 3. When you have done updating all your work with your tag, enter the tag into the search field and hit the Search button…. This will return and display all your work. 4. There is a gray bar just above the top row of your images and has text which will say ‘1 – 24 of 38 wall art, t-shirts and more for [your tag] —-- change layout:’ at the right hand side of the bar are two icons click the first one and your work will be displayed as a list. This is the view, which you want….. 5. Now go up to the menu bar on the top of the page and copy the link in the address bar it will look something like this http://www.redbubble.com/search/find/yourtag?display_mode=list 6. All you need to do is copy this into your profile page in the area that you write your description. / The format is “To see my work displayed as a list…. Click Here” : http://www.redbubble.com/search/find/yourtag?display_mode=list Note: you have to remove the space before the colon just after the quotation marks…. Good luck! PS You can also click on the “Related items” menu at the side that will sort and display your work into cards, posters, etc…... UPDATE: There has been some more changes from RB and the filter page is not going to ‘list’ view by using the code described above…. / However if you add ‘&page=1’ to the end of the URL this seems to force it to display as a list (see example below) / http://www.redbubble.com/search/webbew?display_mode=list&page=1

search engines are very good for sales
by Jo O'BrienYou only have to glance at the recent sales tab to see that one particular shirt is …
You only have to glance at the recent sales tab to see that one particular shirt is selling like hotcakes right now. Ah… The magic of search engines. I often get up and profess about how important it is to sell yourself, and to promote your art out in the ‘real world.’ Well today I’m going to blabber on at you about search engine optimisation (SEO) There are people who spend their entire working life helping bigger websites like redbubble improve their coverage in search engines. But that doesn’t mean that we as individual artists can’t play the same game. Search Engines = Sales / If you search for buy art in google. Something tells me you are shopping for art, probably with your credit card at your side. If I am search for something specific it probably means that there aren’t too many places I can find it. As an artist, I want my art to show up prominently when doing these searches so you will buy it. How to help your work come up in search engines / 1. Use relevant key words in your titles, descriptions and tags. Words that accurately and best describe your work. / 2. Linky Love. When lots of places link to your work, search engines pay attention and start to wonder what is so important about your site. So swap links with friends and link to your main site from all your other online spaces. / 3. Use text. Search engines like words so don’t forget to add descriptions to your artwork. All those comments under your art suddenly have an extra added bonus. And be aware of spelling and grammar. Play by the rules or get disqualified / Yahoo and Google didn’t become multimillion dollar business by letting any Tom Dick or Harry waltz in and mess with their system. You might think it’s really smart to tag something with a bazillion words… until it stops working for you. Ha Ha! It might seem like a few little tweaks but it can make a big difference to how often buyers stumble across your art.

I opened my email to find 22 emails from models wanting to shoot with me. (which is more than I get in a week some weeks) This seemed very very strange until I thought to do a few quick Google searches. I think Google and RedBubble were separated at birth. They love each other so much and I love them both :) Now I’ve got enough work to fill me up until July at least. Yay.

/ Midnight Blues by Karin Taylor Well howdy my bubbly friends, and wouldya believe i got me favourite piece of art featured on the HOMEPAGE tonight!! omi!!! omeeee!!! omi!!!! You see, i was just havin’ a little whinge about how i never get featured no more….. / and the one i was thinkin’ deserved a little featuring…just happens to pop up on / the homepage….wo!! I should try whingin’ a little more often (nah, my family disagrees!!!!!) lol Midnight Blues is from a painting i did recently on Arches Aquarelle Paper 56×76cm, a mixed media production, utilising inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoals, found objects such as string and fabric….and the most beautiful gold paint which gives the guitar it’s lustre Midnight Blues is from the Inspired Series by Karin Taylor, during the painting of this, i was strongly influenced by my favourite Australian artist, Brett Whitely, longing to capture something of the wonderful curves he created in his works. It has a dark and sombre feeling, much like how i was feeling at the time i created her. I used to laugh and carry on that my thoughts and my moods could ever be conveyed through a painting, and it was just silly that people reckoned they did so, but just look at me now….i cannot seem to prevent it happening these days!! lol…that’ll teach me to scoff :)

I really do write a lot of random journals looking for people and stuff… Well today I’m on the hunt for some ultrasounds of a baby in the womb. Preferably one that I could scan and get up to about A4 size. Or if you are not in Melbourne, perhaps you could help by scanning it and emailing? Ideally it will have a reasonably recognisable baby-esque blob visible in it. This is for a tasteful art piece. If you might be able to help and would like more info, drop me a line

If you have a large portfolio like me (460 images, sorry) it gets sometimes hard to keep track. Tags are handy because you can use the RB search. Of course when you search for example for the word “blue” you realize soon enough there are other people using that word too. What I do is put in my username (geetwee) and my last name in the tag field. I am lucky that both are unique. If yours are not unique add some code to the username or last name. In my case that could be for example beerens940. To find your images add your unique tag field to the search. In my case I would for example put: / beerens blue / in the search box. That will find any of my images that are tagged with blue AND beerens. If you try this remember that it takes some time before your changed tags show up in the RB search. Also when you are at it put the title of your image in the tag field. That way you can also search for the title of your image. Hope this helps. / Jo

A new year, A new town, What else?

Well here i am, making my first entry into something i never thought i’d do. I guess i thought nobody would ever read this. / Maybe they won’t. / Maybe this is just for me. / In any case I’m sitting here at nine minutes past midnight on the eighth of January, foul year of our lord 2008. Wondering if, anything new will happen this time around. Not in any ordinary sense, like for example if the bin men will start to come on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday. I’m talking about something far more prestigious, will something come around the bend and take me some place special. / Probably not. / One can always hope. / I’ll probably have to go and find it. Which is a great shame since my car is 300 miles away and i fear that if i were to stray more than a few hundred meters away from my cage here at 41, I’ll most probably be raped and pillaged by the hordes of hoi polloi and plebs. I know that makes me sound like a snob, but just you come to this edge of the world and you can find out for yourself that there are lower forms of life than a Prokaryote. / This is starting to sound like some sort of depressed introduction to a suicide note. Far from it. I’m just typing whatever pops into my head at this god forsaken hour being in a slight state of delirium, mostly from lack of sleep. I would sleep, but i can’t. At first i thought i had insomnia but promptly discarded this idea when i realized that i sleep for around 14-16 hours at a time. It’s just i can’t sleep till around 3am . I’ve been told “it’s because of all that coke you drink”. Well, just to set the record straight, it’s fucking Dr pepper. / I realize theres not much talk of photography so far, so maybe I’ll have a dabble… / I haven’t taken a ‘proper’ photograph for months. Mainly due to the fact that by the time i get up, it’s dark again. / Terrible excuse. / Actually it is a little depressing that i haven’t produced anything new for this long. Even the last two additions to the gallery were old photographs reworked. This isn’t to say the ideas aren’t there, right now many scribblings and doodles lay dormant in the back pocket of these jeans. These will come to life very soon, i promise. / My fingers are tired now. And cold. Whats wrong with the damn heating? Yours frostily. A.J.W. P.S. Christmas was pretty great. As was New year. P.P.S. This has ended like a letter hasn’t it?

Regarding Image Categories, Buyers and Groups
by Rebecca CruzI’ve posted the following in the forums...
I’ve posted the following in the forums but have decided to create a journal entry on it also, it’s something I feel strongly about! I’ve said the following before in bits and pieces in response to different forum topics on group and buyer issues, but I feel it really does need to be said fully and in it’s own thread. I believe that until RedBubble implements a categorization method for artists to sort their images and buyers to find artwork, many of the issues and dissent we are seeing with groups will remain. I also believe that without this image categorization, many potential non-member buyers become frustrated with attempting to find images that suit their needs. It seems to me that a vast majority of RB members view groups as nothing more than a way to sort and categorize their images. Flower images are submitted to a Flower Group, not because the artist has a passion for flower art and wishes to participate with a group of equally passionate Flower Art enthusiasts, but rather simply because their image has a flower in it and they believe submitting it to a group is the best way to categorize their art for it to be found by potential buyers. Because of groups being used for image sorting they are not being used as artist-interactive communities. This leads to overwhelmed and frustrated hosts and artists, resulting in hurt feelings over rejected images, anger over group guidelines and general unrest and upset. Many seem to believe that not being able to include their artwork in a group is limiting their exposure to buyers. When in reality, the likelihood of a non-member using the groups to search for their next artwork purchase is very slim. Many wish groups to be more interactive and participatory, however they are at odds against those who have no desire for this and simply want a place to sort their images. If we had an image categorization method, independent of keywords, buyers would have an easier way to locate the artwork they are searching for. A buyer would have the option to choose (for example) Photography – Nature – Flowers and would then be presented with all flower images, regardless of what group that image belongs to. I think that with this system in place, groups would be much more likely to become what I see they were meant to be: Communities of like-minded artists that wish to participate together and share a passion for a particular artistic subject or medium. This categorization feature, to me, is one of the most essential features that RB could implement. Most importantly, it would facilitate buyers in making their way through the multitude of images on the website and secondly I believe that when members understand that groups are not meant for categorizing their artwork for buyers, it would go a long way to solving many of the issues we are seeing with groups.

I knew it would pay-off to add my pseudonym to EVERY photograph, writing, journal entry and t_shirt in my Redbubble gallery! You can search on stephentrepreneur to discover what is most popular in my gallery, including my t-shirts, my photography, my writing and from within my journal. It also ensures that when someone searches for my name in any browser (ie, google ), my artwork will be found, viewed and purchased. Another free tip in marketing, search-engine-manipulation, and free-promotion. Gotta love the internet.

I’m starting to run out of things to say because a thankyou still sounds like a thankyou… no matter how you say it… so once again a HUGE THANKS to the latest buyer of the Heath Ledger t-shirt… me love you long time! An interesting fact for the readers is that in Australia… when searching the term ‘heath ledger t-shirt’ in Google… my design pops up fourth in the list… which means it has risen from around 7th around the last time I checked (if I remember correctly)... how cool is that?! If you have a spare 20 seconds… do a search in your browser and let me know what you get… I wonder if it’s the same or better/worse in other parts of the world… and in other search engines that I do not use such as MSN or Yahoo or Altavista or whatever… be interesting to know.

How people find my photography
by Dave PearsonFollowing on from my clickable search term interconnectedness graph thingy-...
Following on from my clickable search term interconnectedness graph thingy, and prompted by a conversation with my friendly Scottish Landscape Photographer after he added a similar feature to his website, this morning I got to thinking about adding a simple list of the most popular recent search phrases that resulted in people landing on one of my photographs on my main website. A little bit of php hacking later (using the output of a ruby tool I wrote that simply extracts search phrases from apache log files) and I had a table of the 40 most popular recent search hits on the photography section of my site. It’s interesting to see how some are very specific (the old “big fish in a small pond” thing going on there, obviously) while one or two are rather general (photographs coming in at #2 was a surprise, for example).
