  • Southern Gannets in close to the rocks feeding on cuttlefish and squid. The image is a composite all shot within 30 minutes. It is an initial long exposure with a wide angle lens. The birds were then shot at the same location in the same session with a telephoto lens and “dropped in” during post processing.

  • / Nikon D60~ 55/200 / Mexico Jan/2009 Snowy Egret / Egretta thula / Length: 22 to 26 inches Wingspan: 46 inches Seasonality: Summer / Migrant / ID Keys: Black legs with contrasting yellow feet, black bill, all white plumage The elegant snowy egret was killed by the thousands in the 1800’s for its long, lacy breeding plumage, which was used for women’s hats and other clothing. It has recovered both in range and numbers since that time. Of the white egrets found in South Dakota, the Snowy Egret can be identified by its size (smaller than the Great Egret), it’s yellow feet contrasting with black legs. See the Identification Tips page for differentiating among the white Egrets and Herons in the state. Habitat: Prefers large sloughs or marshes, sometimes edges of ponds or lakes. / Diet: Varies, but includes fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, rodents, snails, and worms. / Behavior: Uses a variety of foraging techniques. They will often actively wade through shallow waters, chasing prey that is startled by the movement. They will also stand still in shallow water, waiting for prey to approach. Snowy Egrets will also forage on dry land, usually in search of insects. / Nesting: June and July / Breeding Map: Breeding bird survey map / Song: Generally silent / Migration: Birds in the interior of the country migrate to U.S. coastal areas, Mexico, and Central America in the fall. / Similar Species: Cattle Egret, Great Egret, immature Little Blue Heron. See Identification Tips for differentiating between these species. / Conservation Status: Expanding range to the north and increasing population in recent decades. Numbers are still far below historical levels, however.

  • 3d art render of four houned puffins. / Made with bryce 3d and ken Gilliland’s songbird remix Puffins. www.daz3d.com and http://www.empken.com/SongbirdReMix/ The Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) is an auk, similar in appearance to the Atlantic Puffin; this bird’s bill is yellow at the base and red at the tip. It is a pelagic seabird that feeds primarily by diving for fish. It nests in colonies, often with other auks. The yellow bill plate grows before the breeding season and is shed later. They have a small fleshy black “horn” above their eyes. They have a white face with a dark line extending from the back of the eye and red feet. This species breeds on rocky islands off the coasts of Siberia, Alaska and British Columbia, in burrows, in rocky cavities or among rocks. It winters far out to sea. Feeding areas are usually located fairly far offshore from the nest. There is usually one chick and both parents feed the young. Horned Puffins will return from hunting with several small fish in their beaks. They also eat squid and crustaceans. The population of these birds has declined due to the introduction of rats onto some islands used for nesting. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

  • After spending the morning at Monomoy NWR, I went to my favorite salt marsh in Chatham to look for some afternoon migrants. This is a pair of greater yellowlegs in flight over the marsh. The greater yellowlegs forages in salt marshes, tidal pools and the ocean tide line. Using their bill to stir up the water, they eat little fish, as well as small crabs, shrimp and marine worms. Although the species doesn’t breed on Cape Cod, they are routinely seen during migration.
