A misty morning and calm waters on Swan Bay habour,Queenscliff,Bellarine Peninsula
There’s no thrill in easy sailing when the skies are clear and blue, there’s no joy in merely doing things which any one can do. But there is some satisfaction that is mighty sweet to take, when you reach a destination that you never thought you’d meet….................... Sydney Harbour, Australia, sailing heaven …..... . /
Here’s one of the competitors from Scarborough Yacht Club ‘racing into the sun’ in South Bay, Scarborough, North Yorkshire and for those who know the town, Oliver’s Mount is clearly visible in the background.

/ Calypso’s Quest by Karin Taylor / from the Beach Stuff Series / this is mixed media collaged piece / i have used acrylics and guache, watercolours, cut out paper / to form the sails and the hull This song is about the ship Calypso, which was bought by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and converted to an oceanographic ship. Cousteau wanted to understand “The silent world” better, in order to protect it. “To live on the land we must learn from the sea” – Cousteau was the first to do research on pollution and its effects on the sea and received many honors for his accomplishments. John Denver cared deeply about nature and this song was a tribute to both Calypso and her captain and their valuable work. (thanks, Marthe – Amsterdam, Netherlands) Calypso” Lyrics / To sail on a dream, on a crystal clear ocean, / To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm; / To work in the service of life and the living / In search of the answers to questions unknown; / To be part of the movement and part of the growing, / Part of beginning to understand . . . Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to, / The things that you’ve shown us, / The stories you tell; / Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit, / The men who have served you / So long and so well. Like the dolphin who guides you, / You bring us beside you / To light up the darkness and show us the way; / For, though we are strangers in your silent world, / To live on the land we must learn from the sea; / To be true as the tide and free as the wind-swell, / Joyful and loving in letting it be . . . / John Denver / Album: Windsong

Walking out at dawn in the tiny port of Orhaniye in Turkey I passed rows of wonderful moored gulets and fishing boats before coming the final berth at the end … so sad to see this once fine boat at rest … which never made it in time to the boatyard just a mile further on….. See also new day / taken shortly afterwards in the tranquil dawning light just along the quayside… / And for a glimpse of the breakfast bustle I returned to after this tranquil start to the day see unimpressed Taken with a compact nikon coolpix 4800

See extra large view here Close of day at a misty Castle Moil. The present structure is of late 15th or early 16th century construction. This is supported by historical documents and carbon dating. In 1513, a meeting of chiefs was held here and they agreed to support Donald MacDonald as Lord of the Isles. The last occupant of the castle was Neill MacKinnon, nephew of 26th chief of the clan (c. 1601). The castle occupies a headland above the village of Kyleakin facing the village of Kyle of Lochalsh across the Sound. It is a simple rectangular keep of three stories. The unexplored basement level is filled with rubble and other debris and is believed to have contained the kitchen. The visitor today enters on the main level where the public dining space would have been. Stairs would have led up to the private apartments above. The castle is nearly completely ruined. In 1949 and 1989 parts of the ruins broke away in storms. The remaining ruins have been secured to prevent further deterioration. No excavation of the ruins has been carried out, or is planned.
The Couta Boats are a classic vessel originally used for fishing on the Victorian coast from the 1870s through until WW2. To obtain the best prices for their catch, the fishermen had to be first back to port after filling their quota. So, as well as being a good fishing vessel and load-carrier, the Couta Boats had to be nimble and fast under sail. They also had to take on some of Australia’s most treacherous waters through The Rip and Bass Strait, and bring crew and catch back safely. Now these distinctive little boats zip around Port Phillip Bay in highly competitive races, giving a classic look to sport on the water. More Mornington Peninsula ...
