This colony of blue throated ascidians are marine creatures that live attached to a pylon under the Busselton Jetty. This is a photograph I took when I was beginning to learn about underwater phtography. Scuba diving and photography often make some wonderful images. Water and cameras however do not mix so well, which is where the art of underwater photography becomes difficult. Nikonos V – 35mm with macro extension tube / Fujicrome slide film

A small school of silver fish swim over the coral reef in Indonesia
The elusive leafy sea dragon. After months of diving in places where people recommended seeing one, I finally managed to spot one under the jetty at Wool Bay. Must say, it was one of the best sights so far. Very hard to spot, these guys blend in perfectly with the surrounding weeds (makes it much more satisfying to find them!)
The dive master in Fiji was good enough to put on a demonstration of how well he could blow these bubble rings.

I was lucky enough to spend nearly an hour swimming alongside this juvenille green turtle (Chelonia mydas) on the fringing reef at Lady Elliott Island in the Southern part of the Great Barrier Reef. Lady Elliott is a beautiful island that is home to a wide variety of marine life and seabirds. Best of all the resort is reasonably priced fairly basic accommodation unlike most of the rest of the island resorts in the GBR. If you get the chance then Lady Elliott is well worth the trip. During my week long visit I would have seen more than >10 green turtles, hatchlings on the beach, sharks, rays, gourpers and a myriad of other reef fish. The coral reef on the other side of the island is spactacular with huge plate (Acropora sp.) corals everywhere. It is truly magic.

The predatory Red Lionfish is one of a number of similar species widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific. The spines are venomous. Lionfish have recently been released in Florida and the species is now showing up in the Eastern Atlantic and Caribbean.

Red Sea Anemone Fish
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be good. I did position myself to silhouette the turtle against the sun, but it was pure luck that my initial large exhalation bubble got between me and the turtle and picked up the animal’s reflection. This was shot at Darwin Island in the Galapagos, May, 2007.
