The Red-crowned Amazon, Amazona viridigenalis also known as Red-crowned Parrot, Green-cheeked Amazon, or Mexican Red-headed Parrot, is an endangered Amazon parrot native to northeastern Mexico. The current native wild population of between 1,000 and 2,000 is decreasing. The main threats to its survival are the illegal export of trapped birds from Mexico to the United States and the destruction of habitat. Their appearance is generally green with the most notable features being a bright red forehead and crown, dark blue streaks behind the eyes, and light green cheeks. Their natural range is across the lowlands of northeastern Mexico. Feral birds have been introduced to urban communities of southern California and southern Florida. Birds in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas may be either feral or vagrants from Mexico. They gather in large flocks being noisiest in the morning and evening. The characteristic screeching heard of these birds usually occurs when they travel in a large flock to a new feeding area. Diet consists of seeds, fruits, flowers and nectar. Red-crowned Amazons nest in tree cavities like most other parrots. This parrot is often kept as a pet and can be very affectionate and playful when given the attention they need from their owners. They should be given toys to play with if left alone. Although some are excellent talkers, they are best at mimicking sounds. Sign for The Beachcomber Motel on the Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, CA. I took this photo/slide around 1982 with my Fujica 35mm and shot it today, backlit, through a very old slide viewer. I think the sign & motel are long gone. March 2009.

A cheetah pair just hanging out and doing their thing. I’m so glad they have each other. A while back, we had two cheetahs, and one died of old age. The remaining cheetah mourned her partner and was very sad for a while. Now there are two again, and they seem to be enjoying each other’s company so much lately. This makes me so happy for them. Detail on one of the gold-plated vats that were used to store rain water for extinguishing fires in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. Built of all-wood and lit by oil lamps, the buildings often fell victim to destructive conflagrations. The scrape marks are left by the Allied Forces of the Eight Powers when they occupied Beijing post-Qing dynasty; the “barbarians” of the west proceeded to plunder all the riches of the middle kingdom’s capital, including using their bayonets to scratch the plated gold off the urns, some of which were coated with 2.2 kgs of gold plate.
