  • / Just saw some great pictures of the Darling River, near Bourke, on Redbubble. / I was there, in 1967 and 1968. Coached (not very successfully) the kids, in Saturday mornings. Pupils and I painted a back-drop for the stage of the local club (RSL?). Played the piano-accordion, on the back of a truck, in a parade, going to the rodeo. Took part in the walk-a-thon…...Watched Doctor Zhivago, go through the snow, on the screen of the open-air cinema, on a VERY hot summer night. / / (As I saw the Darling River, in 1968.) / Memories! Memories. / Played the hero, in the melo-drama. I could go on. / Thanks, Ross for bringing those memories back. ... / / ... / / ... / Darn! Didn’t get a mention for being Bessie’s hero, in the melo-drama. / The fun thing was that the colleague who was a very good friend, played the dastardly villain. (We are still in contact.)

  • Page three, the final page of my Snail Mail Project contribution, is all about where I live! I figured…this whole project is about a journey so might as well document where this book as been by devoting an entire page to my lovely home! I have represented Southern California as a whole and then have broken that down into the major sub-areas that make up my hometown: West Covina is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles County. Located about 20 mins. outside of the city of Los Angeles, West Covina is a suburb that is only minutes away from beach, desert, mountain, city, and rural areas all while being self-contained in a mini-mall infested and culturally diverse locale. We’re all about sun glasses, suburbs, and sun tans (or burns, depending on who you ask). Sure, we drive crazy and tear down historic landmarks to build Wal-Marts, but where else can you buy underwear at 3 a.m., visit the Magic Kingdom, try a different type of food every night of the week, and see a Starbucks at every sinlge intersection? We build sand castles in the sky and tear them down just as quickly. We’re expensive, larger than life, and one large melting pot of ideas, cultures, and environments. Visit us and you will see true capitalists at work. And, those of us bohemians who manage to survive will be the first to say that we love this town but will never admit to it because that would be too cliche! This page was created via mixed media collage utilizing photographs, stickers, pen, paper, and ultra cool scrapbook details. I hope you enjoy! I have been lucky to go regularly to Tuscany for a number of years, and seeing and experiencing some well known places and some not so well known repeatedly has allowed theses brief encounters to build and form a visual collective. When they will bare fruit I don’t know yet but that is the beauty of having a sketchbook with you at all times just to gather and collect. I saw a TV documentary of Hockney and he was drawing constantly and one of these sessions used pens. So on this particular trip I decided to go out with a Fine-liner, Broad tip pen and a grey felt-tip pen. The strong light and deep shadows allowed the pens to work their particular character, and then over an expresso or two the watercolours came out and a few quick washes of yellow ochre or burnt siena, raw umber, quite appropriate really and I had my little bits of Italy to take back. / / It is one of the great things about flying into Pisa, you can jump on a train in minutes and be in the heart of the city. / / These are snapshots of going to Vinci on the bus, street signs and other memorabilia. / / This was on a plaque outside the Vinci museum.” You are about to enter Piazza dei Guidi, a work of art by M.Paladino. Please “respect” the shapes of the piazza and take “care” when stepping outside the marked paths. The work is enhanced by the presence of people but it’s satisfactory conservation depends on everyone’s consideration.” I thought this statement was fantastic it has all sorts of messages there for how we engage with the visual world. / / Firenze the Galleria dell ‘Accademia Michelangelo’s David but his unfinished sculptures are equally impressive, figures emerging out of the rock. Every street give a view of Santa Maria Del Fiore the duomo dominates the skyline the view from the top is spectacular. / / Bikes in every style imaginable, one day I will find a way of handling them, the black and white marble of Siena. / / Magnolia Trees I think with unusual seed bods.
