  • Scott Robinson Illustrator, tee shirt designer and Red Bubble stalwart. Queenslander Scott has crammed a lot into his 31 years most of it based round his two great loves; drawing and skateboarding. From owning and running two small skate shops in Brisbane to be a major contributor as lead artist for works working with young people done in conjunction with The Queensland Art Council. Scott has mixed his two passions seamlessly. Scott also has 20 plus skateboard designs in production and has been highly active in exhibitions in Brisbane and recently sold one of his designs in auction to raise funds for NSW Cancer Council at the Across the board Art Expo. I thought I’d sit down with Scott (in a literal sense) to find out a bit more about what makes him tick? Danny: Skateboarding and art – were they always linked or one passion grew before or with the other? Scott: Well, for me they’re inseparable – I once surmised that “skateboarding is art for the body, art is skateboarding for the mind”. By that, I mean that skateboarding is a free flowing art form, self evaluated, and self inspired. You don’t rely on a team or an organisation, it’s just you and your board, and however you want to approach the world on it. Much like a canvas really. Art is skateboarding for the mind, because it gives you a method in which to express yourself, and it takes you wherever you want to go. Again, self motivated, self assessed. That, and skateboards themselves have always had a graphic element to them. It’s truly what separates skateboarding from other sports, all boards have graphics, and the art contained on them have always been a HUGE influence on me. So skateboarding and art have always gone hand in hand. I still think that Skate artists like Vance Courtney Johnson and Jeff Phillips are some of the finest artists of their time. Which came first? I think I’ve always drawn, since I could hold a crayon, I’ve been skateboarding seriously since I was 10 years old (I’ve always been a quiet and quite shy kind of person, and liked things I could do by myself,), but i also think that skateboarding made me want to work on drawing to be able to create something that could be seen as “skate graphic worthy” I suppose you mimic those you admire, and I’ve always admired skate artists, and skateboarders in general. Skateboarding, Life, Music, Freinds,..All things influence me really, my art is just me reflecting on either ideas, or inspiration from the world around me.. Danny: Business – are you still involved – art or skateboarding? Scott: Well, yes and no for both… I still have dealing with Skate Companies for graphics, but I’m not behind the counter anymore. And I do freelance graphic design for a few different places, but it’s more when I want to, than have to. Danny: Anyone with eyes can tell the technical expertise of your drawings, are you a draughtsmen or had any training? Scott: Not really. I’ve never done any real studies in that regard. But one of my first “artistic” jobs out of design school was as a technical illustrator. I worked for a automotive parts manufacturer, and my job was to create instruction manuals. How to fit the parts on etc, etc,. Being as most of their market was overseas, drawings are more universally understandable. Was fun for a while too, but I never want to draw another headlight cover in my life. While i do enjoy manipulating images, nothing comes even close to being as fun and rewarding as picking up some A3 paper and a pencil… Danny: Is Brisbane an artistic environment? Scott: Hell yes! Brisbane’s art scene is so strong right now, and it just motivates me to do anything I can to promote it further. Lot of little independent galleries, all running obscure shows, New art “zines” popping up all the time.. There’s always something arty to find yourself at if you look for them. Even the more commonplace galleries are full. It’s a great place to be artistically right now. And just to plug some events, recently we had the Paintskate Experiment and the Dex exhibition at the powerhouse in Brisbane, and then we have the upcoming FreQee exhibition held by the same group of artists. (All of these by the way: Scott was a showcased artist). Danny: Skateboarding can’t last forever, bones get brittle – how are you preparing for this? Scott: Flat out denial! Well, that’s not entirely true. The drive to learn new tricks, extend myself further in skateboarding has kind of died of over the last 4 years or so, but the desire to roll, and by that i mean no tricks, just skating in the sunshine, rolling down the street is still as strong as ever.. It`s a beautiful feeling, and I’ve likened it to my own personal magic carpet ride. I don’t ever want to be without that feeling..I should be able to skate like that for as long as I can stand up without falling over. Danny: Red Bubble influence on art, lifestyle? Scott: Well, I do love the T-shirt function, so that’s been a bit of a design consideration for me. And I do love being surrounded with such vibrant personalities and artworks. No man is an island, so I’m sure that it is influencing me to some degree.. My lifestyle remains the same though; I stick to what I love. - Danny

Well, Brisbane finally took the plunge and we had our first meet where people actually attended!! The lovely Helen (LittleHelen) arrived at my house at 10am Sunday morning to me still in my pyjamas, so naturally I put her to work in my kitchen :p It rained most of the morning and we were a little disheartened as our meet was a picnic in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens! Luckily by the time we’d driven to Brisbane from the Gold Coast the skies were blue and it was hot and sunny! Helen and I put our balloons up and set up our table just as the first Brisbanite arrived! It was a fun, relaxed, enjoyable afternoon and it was wonderful to finally meet some Brisbane artists. Here’s a few pictures from the day! (Jack01 aka Collie also came with her husband Peter and brother Kev but they unfortunately had to leave before I broke my camera out) drec (Derek) says: always Coca Cola GabrielK listening intently to some profound and philosophical conversation no doubt. (and can I just say these photos don’t do him justice! Really beautiful guy! Romanian and something else if I remember correctly lol) Drec (Derek) tries to come to terms with Kathleen’s psychic powers Kathleen does her best “no really i’m sweet and innocent” face That infamous soccer game! GabrielK pretending he doesn’t know i’m taking (another) picture of him Scott Robinson charges his solar panel for the long walk home Food! Kathleen uses all her jedi mind powers to shrink an unsuspecting guy and his park bench Drec (Derek) has farted and is hoping nobody’s noticed Steven Lippis explains to everyone how his birth defect has impacted upon his life. Gabrielk isn’t interested as he’s perving on that blonde chick in the bikini Helen Every pic I took of Helen is blurry because everytime I went to take a pic of her she’d make me laugh! (And when I dropped her home she invited me in for coffee (wink wink nudge nudge :p) Cake Face! Steven Lippis and the birth defect

Battersea Power Station is clearly the finest structure in London, forget Apsley House, you want imposing might, you can’t go further than Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s magnificent Art Deco monolith of brick. / So he had a stab at the telephone box, and Bankside (or the Tate Modern) is alright, but those four chimney’s rising from clutter of terraces and railway sidings strike an imposing figure over the city skyline. And it’s not surprising, it’s the largest brick building in Europe. / From Pink Floyd to Children of Men, via The Beatles and The Dark Knight, it is scorched into our modern cultural psyche, the Bank of England burnt tens of thousands of pounds in the furnaces there when they thought the Bosch were about to conquer us during WW2. Meanwhile the RAF were using the plumes of smoke to guide them home. Screaming Lord Sutch wanted to cover it in wool and make it look like a dead sheep, John Broome tried to turn it into a theme park. Now they want to turn it into a naff collection of faux pot plants and cafes, with a riverside walkway way, exterior designed to within an inch of it’s life. They’ll probably fail. But I don’t care, it meant that it was opened for two days for the public to get inside and have a wander, and this just hasn’t happened very often. (PVZ would have wet himself) On a different note, but while I have your attention, the next day I attended the Lovebox Weekender, and aside from Goldfrapp having these totally ace guys dressed up like colourful carpets pinging it all over the stage, Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips came out in a massive plastic ball and went walking and crawling all over the crowd, oh, and yeah, their show was amazing too

I would like to share the writing by John Scott on my work with RB members. / I asked a big favor to John whether he could write something about my work. / John galdly accepted to write it for my coming exhibition. I feel very honored to have John’s fantastic writing. Thanks John Scott! Exhibition-The whisper of Trees Artist-Min Woo Bang Anyone familiar with Min’s work will instantly recognize his pieces from the onset. Those who are new to his work will familiarize with them quite quickly. By contrast they will not forget them easily. / Min’s limited palette of moody, sombre tones, textural groundwork and a healthy mix of intuitive application, draws the viewer to another space instantly. This space, like an old meditation cushion, transports the viewer to remote feelings, akin to deep meditative states, some feelings only available to seasoned practitioners. East or west, the results are the same. Space, mood, power, sanctity, serenity and danger, all of these aspects are evocative of a deeper primordial urge that lies within each soul, prompting hermetically sealed questions of themselves. These urges are profound, sometimes subtle and vast, begging the bigger questions of “why are we here?” “where did we come from?” and “where are we going?”. On viewing Min’s work, definable culture is immediately transcended, amalgamating our common ground of human emotion. Mountain vistas unfolding then enfolding within themselves, reflecting the powerful elements of mother earth in all her majestic power. Cloud formations enact out primordial tantric dances around coruscating peaks that emerge like enlightened flashes of inspiration. Mists that obfuscate hidden nooks and crannies, again, reflect our inner subtle mind, enticing us to take a risk and search for hidden pearls. Little caves are discovered, veiled like allegorical secrets hidden deep within our innermost complicated worlds. / Mountains have always been mysterious places of power, and yes, completely sacred. Pilgrims from all races may spend months, even years slowly prostrating toward, circumnavigating or climbing mountains, for just one inner pearl. Many have died trying, again reflecting our weaknesses as well as our strengths. Sprinkled throughout history, literal and mythological mountains have been at the center of many universes. Like a psychic transference of this sacred symbol, Min’s art literally recreates the mystery from within his inner being, from feelings and memories. These imaginative memories remind us of what we need so much in a difficult world. Like a visual prophet, in the face of such overwhelming odds, Min’s work reminds us that we have to pay obeisance to the earth not the other way around. If we choose to “listen” to the immensity of the space in-between the sound, the rewards may be few, but well worth it. Min’s work does that for me. / In a world confronted by daily turmoil, unrest, swift change and uncertainty, Min’s latest works are changing and adapting to new challenges, and yet, like primal anchors, I feel safe and nurtured in these emotive, visual works. This Gnostic-like knowing that I’m connected to the earth through Min’s interpretations is comforting for me, as they talk directly to my hidden space. / New inner winds are guiding Min’s latest paintings; these new works now incorporate foreboding trees and forests, replete with an organic language of their own. There is still the familiar subjective colour palette giving an over-all poetic rhythm within and throughout Min’s entire visual history. The Bauhaus school of colour philosophy comes to mind here, as a well-trained visual artist eventually finds their own limited subjective colours to expand on complex theorems. The trademark colouring mentioned above, gives Min’s work immediate recognition of his current work, forming a bridge from his earlier works. / Mists appearing through small gaps entice the viewer to probe the unknown aspect of their own respective inner search. In a few works, powerful heat emanates in the distance, a coming state of human affairs? The element of fire begins to slowly creep into Min’s new works and our collective unconscious; Jung would have a field day with symbolism such as this. In some cases the viewer is enticed into the unknown, but not in a threatening way. Gaps appear like the abyss of the unknown, an unknown that one needs to cross to gain new insights and new tools for change, before again feeling safe in comfortable territory. These works invoke a non-threatening voyage of discovery in myself. These works are of a highly spiritual nature, in a world of new age remedies and age-old philosophies. / Mists veil outcomes, like allegorical texts, this visual sage scries into our future only to find unknown outcomes, urging each of us, just to be here, right now, not to push but just contemplate exactly where we are at. / The Hermit card in the major arcana of the Tarot comes to mind here as he emerges with his lamp to guide us through new inner terrain, contemplation, perhaps enlightenment itself? This mystery is held comfortably within Min’s philosophical grasp of his environment. Whether one resides in a complex city structure or a wilderness landscape, Min’s work creates a viable alternative to outer confusion and chaos, a meditative inner space. Min’s work creates a path for me, through time, space and temporal realities, a path that is elusive but ever present for the genuine searcher. Yesterday the infamous artist formerly known as Resisto unleashed his RES-101 on an unsuspecting community, not only giving us a look at this new and bold creation, but in the true spirit of copyleft, handing over the instructions for all and sundry to assist in the creation of a wind-up army. Having no intention of ever really growing up, I couldn’t think of a better way to pass an hour than to build a big cardboard robot, actually I made it slightly bigger than it was, but only because as you can see my desk hasn’t improved much since the Melbourne days, and RES-101 would have a lot to contend with. In fact, I popped out later on for a copy of ‘Fly Fishing’ by J R Hartley and when I came back RES has escaped the clutter and was trying to shin over the back wall. So I put him in the oven. Now go and make your own and tell Scott he’s a champion. I think we need to mark the spread of the army on a world map.

  • Texturing an Image in Photoshop for Absolute Beginners

Quite a few people have asked me how I do my textured work. / To be honest, everyone does it their own way, but it helps to have someone show you how to get started. / Nicole Goggins taught me, & I believe Mel Brackstone taught her. (apologies if I got that wrong) / Of course there’s always an alternative way of doing the steps, I’ve certainly changed my technique quite a bit since I wrote this, but this is as good a place to start as any. / So here’s the walkthrough that I’ve passed on to those who’ve asked. LETS GET STARTED : I use PhotoShop CS3, but this’ll work with any version. / If you’re not using PS, I’m confident you’ll be able to find your way through it in whatever program you’re using. I’d suggest printing this so you can follow it step by step. 1) Start by opening the image that you want to add a texture to. 2) In the layers palette on the right, (R) click on the background layer & select “Duplicate layer”. This layer will be called “Background copy”, & will sit immediately above the “background” layer. (This is to preserve your original copy) 3) Do whatever adjustments you would usually do until you’re happy with the image as it is. ( ie – levels, curves, hue/sat, curves etc ) 4) Flatten the image - / To do this, go to the Layers palette® click on a layer, & select “Flatten image”. 5)Now it’s time to apply the texture image. / First, you need to make sure that your texture image is the same size as your background image. / To do this :- / Go to your top toolbar & look for the “Image” tab, & click on it. / Then click on “Image Size”. / You’ll need to write down the following details : Pixel dimensions – Width & Height , & Resolution. / Click OK or Cancel to close that window. 6) Now go to your top tool bar, click on “File” & “Open” your texture image. 7)Now that you’re in your texture image, go to “Image”, “Image Size” again, & make sure “Resample Image” is checked, & “Constrain Proportions” is unchecked.. / In that same window, change the resolution & Pixel dimensions – Width & Height to the same details that you wrote down earlier. / Click “OK”. / Now your texture image is the same as your background image. 8) Minimize the texture image. Do not close it, just minimize it. / Now you should see your background image workspace again. 9) In your background again, go to your layers palette & create a “Background copy” like we did in step (2). 10) Go to the little toolbar on the bottom of the “Layers Palette” & look for the little icon that looks like a square with the bottom left corner turning up. / This is the “Create new layer” button. / Click on this & create a new layer, which you can rename to “texture”. / Make sure this layer is active. ( it’ll be highlighted in grey) 11) Go to “Image”, then “Apply Image”. / Now you’ll see a window with a dropdown box named “Source” at the top. / Look for your texture image in the dropdown box , select it, & click “OK”. / You’ll see the texture appear in the “texture” layer that you created in step (10). Now it’s time to get creative….. 12) In the layers palette double click on the little thumbnail image of your texture. / You’ll get a window called “Layer Style”. / Under “Blending Options”, “General blending” you’ll see that the current blend mode is “normal”. / Click on this dropbox & start experimenting with the different blend modes. / I usually use “overlay”, “soft light”, or “hard light”. / This whole “Layer style” window is one you can experiment with as much as you like until you come up with the look you want. / Click “OK” when you’re done. 13) You can change the blend mode of your background copy also. / At this stage you just need to be doing whatever you want to achieve the look you like. 14) For a bit more depth to your texturing, you can try duplicating each layer, & then alternate their order on the palette by dragging them up & down. / eg :- texture copy / background copy 2 / texture / background copy / background (this one is locked, so will always remain on the bottom) 15) In the Layers palette you can adjust the “opacity” of each layer for more or less of the effect. 16) Don’t forget to save as you go. / I like to save all my layers as a psd (Photoshop document) so that I can make changes to it at any time in the future. / When you have a final image that you like, flatten the image ( as in step 4), & “save as” a jpeg. (or your preferred format) 17) Upload to redbubble so that we can all see how well you’ve done!!!! And that’s it! Just remember that there’s no “rules” for this….. a lot of it is just experimenting as you go. What works for one image might look horrid on another, so trust your instincts! [ One last point : I put a lot of time & effort into creating these tutorials. Please don’t disrespect me by claiming them as your own.]

  • What is the Game of Kings?
    by GameOfKings

The Game of Kings is a collaboration bringing together Red Bubble artists from Australia and the UK. Initially starting out as a series of character-based t-shirts, GoK has expanded to include an accompanying narrative and will be spinning out into other media. The basic theme of the project is the game of chess. The initial brief was that the project’s creator, Simon Sherry, would illustrate the black side of the board, while a team of eight other artists would tackle the white. As the project gathered momentum and the members of the group shared ideas and artwork, a story began to evolve around the pieces in this celestial battleground. With the addition of Danny to the group as ‘biographer’ of this strange cast of characters, this story took on a life of its own, and everyone involved knew that the scope of the Game had grown beyond the cotton canvas. Due to the clever skills and imagination of those involved and the epic scope of the theme, the GoK group are creating a wonderful series of artworks, stories and multimedia to hopefully fire the imagination in others. The first ‘phase’ of this project are the character tees making up the board itself. Every two weeks four pieces of the board will be revealed along with a section of the story, adding another piece of the jigsaw to build a final picture. Accompanying the artwork and writing will be interviews with the people involved, adding further insight into the project, their role in it, and the thought behind their creations. Every other week, previews for the next ‘wave’ of characters will be released, along with other behind-the-scenes material to whet appetites for what’s in store. A blog, facebook page and twitter account is also online, providing fans with updates and additional extras that may not appear in the main Red Bubble profile. The Game of Kings Group on Red Bubble will open its doors in the future to accept members who want to contribute ideas, stories and art as well as compete in competitions that will stretch the boundaries of fun and excitement with prizes worth the effort. The Game of Kings is more than Tee Shirts. It’s wall art and animated story lines, vignettes and artist clashing styles against each other. It’s books and games. It’s audience participation and contribution. It’s something that we hope you can watch grow and enjoy as a whole new world opens up before your eyes in the next few months and beyond. We hope you enjoy the ride! - The GoK Team The GoK team is: Simon Sherry / Scott Robinson / thickblackoutline / rubyred / sjem / quigonjim / Jordan Clarke / Nofrillsart / LilyM / Danny

My work has been accepted for the 2009 Silvershotz folio!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for your support everyone! I’m just totally gobsmacked….now I have to prepare the images, AND organise an artists statement….(that’s the hardest part). The images I submitted were mostly from the Study of scars and aging skin that you’ll find on my halftone arty farty portfolio, although the one that will probably get pride of place in the publication is Lean on me, an image of TextureoftheSin and ~Ademac. Thanks so much you two!!!! The magazine will be sent to 1200 galleries and museums around the world! How exciting!!!! I’d just like to extend personal thanks to Kristi for telling me about Silvershotz a couple of years ago, Pilgrim for loving my halftone work, to Paul for his constant support and encouragement (and modelling!), and finally a huge thanks to John Lomas for the final nudge to complete my submission. I’d almost let it lapse…..so thanks so much guys!!! phew, feels like an emmy speech….soz!

  • Game Of Kings Artist Interview: Scott Robinson
    by GameOfKings

*Our interviewee this time is Scott Robinson, a man who has been here on Redbubble creating, in…

Our interviewee this time is Scott Robinson, a man who has been here on Redbubble creating, inspiring and giving since the very beginning. Could you start by telling us a little about yourself ? Do you have a “day” job? A little about myself? Well, yep, I’ve definitely got a day job, I’m a full time graphic designed and illustrator and I run my own little design studio in the evenings. That’s a fair few hours dedicated to designing per day, but it’s the only thing I’ve ever been relatively proficient at. I’m also 100% addicted to coffee, I think those 2 things are related though.. / / Which artists influence or inspire you? Oh, far too many to mention really, I’m really in love with art/design, so anyone that can provoke a response from me gets my admiration. At the heart of things though, It’s all about skate-art for me really. Artists Like Vance Courtland Johnson, Andy Jenkins, Sean Cliver, Neil Blender, A.Hourtley, the Mighty Jim Phillips just to scratch the surfaces. Then there’s people like Jeff Soto & Nate Van Dyke, both of whom I’m currently fascinated with. THEN.. there’s all my comic book heroes, Jack Kirby, Mark Silvestri, Romita’s both junior and senior… there’s just so many people I admire out there. On top of that, there’s all these people I’ve found here at Redbubble that I’ve had to add to that list too. There’s some truly gifted art ninja’s amongst us here. What was your introduction to Game of Kings and what decided you on getting involved? My introduction was that I’d talked to Simon a little while ago about doing some form of collaboration work, and then when he hit me with this tidal wave of an idea for the Game of Kings, I was just blown away, and knew that I wanted to get right into it, as I’d been finding things were getting a little stagnant here at RB, and I don’t know anything that shakes off the blues like throwing yourself head long into a huge melting pot of ideas. I continued to be amazed at every single person involved. It’s been an honour. / What has been most noteworthy about your involvement to date? The people involved are all passionate about what they’re doing, and it inspires you to push yourself harder and harder. With this many people backing you, you want to blow your own doors off.(artistically speaking). Plus they’re all just the most amazing sounding boards for ideas, and everyone’s taking suggestions, incorporating them where they see fit. It’s the truest form of group collaboration I’ve ever witnessed. Is there anything you’d especially like us to know about your characters? Hmm, well I guess I’d like you all to know that while I’ve been the hands that created the lines you’re seeing, the ideas, the concepts, pretty much everything about them has came about organically through this collaborative process. I don’t feel any ownership of them, so much as I shared their creation with everyone. It’s a cool feeling really. / Is there anything else you’d like to add? I just hope everyone can enjoy the works, the stories, the whole grand scale picture that’s been created here. I’d also like to publically thank my fellow collaborators, this has been one hell of a ride! An honour to work beside each and every single one of you.

I was recently asked to explain how I use layers. So while trying to put my thoughts together, I decided I might as well share it with everyone who’s interested. I’ll show how to do very basic adjustments so you get a feel for how layers work. Once you’re comfortable with that you can move on to using layers to create art effects. Please keep in mind that I’m a Photoshop user... I’m in no way an expert! / This is just my way of working with layers. There are many different ways, & they all work. Why use layers ? : / Our reasons for using layers are many & varied. We might be doing vector-like illustrations, Or composing an intricate fantasy photomanipulation. / It may be a simple matter of applying text over an image. / You may just want to do basic tone & colour adjustments of your photographs. / Whatever your reason, using layers is almost essential. / I say this for one very important reason. If you apply adjustments of any type to your original image, you will be altering it permanently. There’s no going back. Pixels get moved around & destroyed, every brush or keystroke seriously alters the quality of your image. / However, working in layers is non-destructive. The original image sits at the bottom of your stack, untouched, unaltered, safe from damage. / All of your edits are stacked on top of the original, & then “flattened”, usually upon completion, or when you’re ready to move on to the next stage of editing. I’ll use this image of a bunch of people looking a Trojan warplane, to demonstrate the basics of using layers. / I’m using PS CS3, & I’m not sure how similar the layout of PS Elements is, so this will either be helpful to you, or just confusing…. it should be fairly similar though. Let’s get started : 1) Open your image in Photoshop, & save it straight away as a psd (Photoshop file format) I’ve decided to call this one “enter the trojan”. / 2) Now have a good look at the image & decide what needs doing. / Does it needs cropping? Some people choose to crop at the start, but for some strange reason I’ll often wait until I’m somewhere through my editing process. I like to wait to see how the image is evolving…. Does anything need cloning out? / This image has a rather annoying person disappearing out of the left side of the frame, so Ill be getting rid of him, as well as cleaning up a few distracting white spots on the airfield in the background. 3) Look to the right of your screen & you’ll see your layers palette. / At the top right of that you’ll see 3 little horizontal lines stacked on top of each other with an arrow next to them. Left click on this & you’ll get a drop-down box. this is your most important box for using layers. Click on duplicate layer, & rename it as you wish. / I’m calling it “clone”. / / You’ll see the duplicate layer appear above the background layer in your layers palette. / / Make sure the clone layer is selected (it’ll be highlighted in grey), & you’re ready to work on that layer. / Now select your clone tool & go to work. All done? If you’re happy with your work make sure you save. Now, remembering what I said about your background (original) layer remaining untouched, here’s a little demo. / Do you see that little eye beside your “clone” layer? / Click on it…. Hello!! Your cloning has gone! Click on it again….. it’s back!!! / OK, we could have fun with this all day, but do you see how the background image is unchanged? Cool huh? Let’s move on…. I’ve got blown out highlights in my clouds which are a problem & the mid-tones are a bit too dark. / I’ll deal with the clouds first by using a curves adjustment layer. 4) All the way down at the bottom of your layers palette, you’ll see a toolbar. look for the circle that’s half black & half white. / This is the “create new fill or adjustment layer” button. / Click on it & select “curves”. / 5) Grab the little white dot on the line in the top right corner. Now drag it a smidgen down to the right. That should take care of the blown out clouds. / Click OK. / / Do you see you now have a curves layer? / (Because I use CS3, it automatically gives me a layer mask box on this layer. It’s that white box in your curves layer. But we’re not going to get into masks today) Now to fix the mid-tones. For this I’m going to add a Levels layer. / 6) Just like in step 4), click on the “create new fill or adjustment layer” button & this time select “Levels”. / 7) This will open a box with a levels histogram in it. / To lighten your mid-tones slide the grey arrow in the middle of the histogram to the left until you’re happy. / Click OK, & you’ll see your levels layer sitting above the curves layer. Now, what if you wanted to do some dodge & burn? / There’s a number of ways to dodge & burn, so I’ll show you one that I use quite often. 8) Remember those 3 little horizontal lines that you clicked on to duplicate the layer? (step 3) / Click on that again, & this time select “New Layer”. / 9) In the dialogue box, change the name to “dodge & burn”, / click on the “mode” dropdown box, & select “overlay”, / then check the box “Fill with overlay-neutral color (50% gray) / it should look something like this : / / Then click OK. You’ll now see a layer called “dodge & burn” in your layers palette. It should be on the top of the pile. If it isn’t, simply drag it to the top. / Any work you do to the top layer will be carried over to all the layers below. 10) Select your burn tool, set your range to Shadows, & Exposure around 20 (this will depend completely upon the type of image you’re working on), then get to work burning out the areas that you feel need deepening. 11) Then take your dodge tool, set your Exposure to around 20 & work over the areas that you think need a little more highlighting. I’ve decided this image needs a bit more saturation. 12) Go back to the black/white circle (as mentioned in step 4), & this time look for Hue/Saturation. / / Adjust your sliders as you see fit, then click OK. / At this stage I’m happy with my basic adjustments. It’s now at the stage where it’s ready for me to use it as a background image for something a little more creative. 13) If you haven’t been saving until now, you really must do it now. 14) Now we’re going to Flatten the file. / Go to those 3 little horizontal lines with the arrow again (step 3), & this time look for “Flatten Image”. / / Click on it. You’ll see that all your layers have been “flattened into just one layer, & it’s now become your new background layer. If you’re planning to print this, you’ll need to give it some sharpening. / There are so many ways to sharpen, but at the moment I’m a bit partial to using the “high pass” filter. 15) To do this you’ll need to use a duplicate layer (remember step 3?) / I’m re-naming it “High Pass Sharpening”. / 16) Go to your “filter” drop down box on your top tool bar, & select, “other”, “high pass”. / 17) Adjust your radius slider until you see a good amount of line detail while keeping the tones in gray. Click OK. / You’re probably wondering what’s happened to your image. We’ll fix that right now. 18) Look above your “high pass” layer, & you’ll see Opacity set at 100%, to the left of that the word “normal” in a drop-down box. / Click on that drop-down box & select “overlay”. / / Presto! You’ve got your image back, & it’s been sharpened. / Toggle the “eye” off & on to see the effect. 19) If it’s too sharpened for your taste, you can adjust the opacity of that layer. / Find the “opacity” slider above the layer, & adjust it as you like. / I’m setting this one to 50%. / 20) Save this as a new psd file ( I’m calling this one “enter the trojan HP sharp”), & flatten it as before. / 21) Now all you need to do is save it in the Format of choice. / I routinely save all my images as TIFF files, & then save again as JPEG. / Remember to do all you backups now so you don’t forget later. All finished! Now you have an image that is fine as is, or ready for you to get a little creative & do further editing. / The final image : / You might also want to look at Texturing an Image in Photoshop for Absolute Beginners for further editing ideas. [ One last point : I put a lot of time & effort into creating these tutorials. Please don’t disrespect me by claiming them as your own.]

After 3 very hectic weeks of choosing images, ordering prints, fretting that my canvasses wouldn’t arrive in time, spending hour after hour pacing the house trying to decide how to price an image, and generally getting myself in a fluster, I’m very happy to say that my first Solo exhibition is finally hung & in situ at Flavours Gallery until January 15. It’s been quite a learning experience…. Thanks so much to those of you who helped me choose my images – 20 in total – some of which I would never have considered, purely because I can be somewhat scatter-brained & don’t tend to check my own gallery as often as I should! I settled on using 13 redbubble matted prints with re-usable frames. / Thanks Mel for pointing out the benefits of being able to sign the images before they go into the frame. The gold pen works a treat on the black matte! / I also used 7 canvasses from another source (because they gallery wrap), which thankfully also look fantastic! I’ve been busy pasting Flyers all around town, & dropping my name at local media outlets, not to mention boring all my facebook & twitter followers with updates & launch dates. / Thanks Deb for suggesting the Flyers….. it never crossed my mind! I managed to take some pics on the day that we hung the exhibition for you to have a peek at. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful support in this exciting venture….. it’s been so much fun :)) Thanks also to my beloved Husband Robert….. he’s supported me in my creative pursuits since the day he met me 18 years ago. This is as much his achievement as it is mine. xxx / The First image goes up… / This is Craig Allen; He’s the Gallery owner. And finally : you can’t beat a sandwich board for drive-by advertising! My very good friends drove by yesterday, saw the Sandwich board & didn’t stop!!! Thanks guys ;-) /
