Caught ‘up the sware’ (a local viewpoint) at dawn yesterday ( 23/9/08) as the sun rose over the tweed valley just outside Peebles, scottish borders. An especially heartwarming sight after the wet grey summer we’ve had … and it’s straight from my Nikon 4800 coolpix compact camera, untouched. ;))) See also mist in the valley taken at the same time ! and also front row seat cheers all / ding / :))

Seasons Greetings! / Wishing everyone a very merry time whatever you’re celebrating / :))) Late afternoon light on this frosty winter scene near Manor Brig over the River Tweed outside Peebles in the lovely Scottish Borders. Taken in a gorgeous winter wonderland, following 24 hours of freezing fog on my first ‘proper outing’ with a real dlsr.. but one of those ‘I must be mad’ moments.. crouched behind a crash barrier on a bend in the Glasgow road, sunday drivers whizzing past… (rb home page 19/11/09) / Nikon D60, VR Nikkor 18-200, UV filter / f/9,1/40 sec, ISO-100, 70mm !

This old dead tree can be found along the River Avon Heritage Trail, a very pleasant walk through nine miles of spectacular wild scenery between Avonbridge and Linlithgow in East Central Scotland. The tree can be found approximately half way along the stretch between the Avon Aquaduct and the Avon Viaduct. A rustic country dawn. This spot is a short distance from Carrington near Temple & Gorebridge in Midlothian Scotland. Stopped on my way to work to capture the sunrise & the mist. It can be quite hard getting to work when the lighting is this good. / Added texture from a macro shot of some rust from St Abbs Harbour. / Made it onto page one of the featured page in the art section of Redbubble 21/10/09 /

Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added. This is the Isle of Skye at it’s best, when there is a lot of colour in the landcsape, with the low sun we get this far North at this time of year, accentuating every detail. / This is the crofting community of Tarskavaig, with the glorious backdrop of the Cuillin Hills. / “Crofting” is small time farming, or “smallholding” where a few crops might be grown, and a small number of cattle or sheep kept. A single RAW file, shot on my Canon EOS 50D , polariser filter, f25, 1/2 sec, underexposed by 2/3 stop, iso 100, auto wb, processed in Adobe CR, then in CS3. The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, tripod, polariser, f19, 1/20sec, iso 100, auto wb, single RAW file pseudo HDR in Photomatix, finished in PS CS3. MORE OF MY WORK HERE /
