One of my first shots taken a DSLR, shot two years ago in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the G8 Summit – which explains the large amount of “Save The World!”-pins on his jacket! Some months later, I got a note from a fellow photographer on deviantART.com, linking me to a picture he shot himself – of the very same man. It’s a small world, isn’t it?
The oldest stone bridge in the Highlands of Scotland which was the first bridge allowing the river Dulnain to be crossed with dry feet was built in what is now Carrbridge, Inverness-shire, Scotland, between May and November 1717 by a mason called John Niccelsone. He did so at the behest of Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant at a cost of £100. The main aim of the bridge was to ensure that funeral processions from the south did not have to be delayed reaching Duthil Church when the river was in spate and unfordable. The bridge was damaged by a great flood in 1829, leaving the present fragile looking archway. I forget the exact location but I spotted this dwelling on my travels in Scotland. It seemed as though it was only in need of a bit of TLC so I asked a couple of locals if it used to be an Inn or parish building. The reply was, “no, just a house”, and then they locals turned and left without another word…..............Almost as if there was some mystery surrounding it that they didn’t want to talk about…...........hence the title Unloved Canon 350D 18-55 IS Tonemapped

Neidpath is a wonderful 13C castle on the banks of the Tweed near Peebles in the lovely scottish borders and a fascinating link here explains more of the history of this special place….) It was attacked in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell who demolished the early tower by cannon fire from the hillside across the river during a seige. / A watercolour depiction of the roundheads siege by the very talented local artist Jack Roney (1920 – 2005) is reproduced below with permission of his family (sorry about the flash on glass ) The castle has an ancient well and pit prison and is also said to be haunted by the ghost of Jean Douglas, referred to by Sir Walter Scott as the Maid of Neidpath in a heartrending poem. The story goes that Jean, youngest daughter of the Earl of March. was forbidden to marry her love who was considered below her station, and she pined while her lover was sent away. When he returned she was so wasted and changed that he didnt recognise her, causing her to die of a broken heart. :(( how sad is that…..:(( She’s said to appear in a full-length brown dress with a large white collar…. Untouched straight from the camera Nikon compact coolpix 4800 / f/4.6 / 1/244 sec / ISO-50 Thanks for looking / cheers / ding / :))) (Inside view of the “castle by candlelight*”: too RCAHMS (The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland) have listed recorded details of this site… although at the present time its no longer open to he public ;))
Looking out from a replica iron age round house* in glentress forest outside peebles in the lovely scottish borders on the site of a settlement dating back 1900 years…. ... The bench is well sited to take in this captivating view across the tweed valley. Taken Jan 09 with an Olympus SP560UZ f/8 1/250 sec ISO-200
View from the top of Cademuir Hill on along the John Buchan Way from Broughton to Peebles in the scottish borders. This ascent was optional in the 14 mile walk but who could resist the chance to stand looking down the valley on the site of this old Iron Age hillfort with its defensive line of jaggy stones (possibly called ‘chevaux-de-frises’) sited in such a way as to be invisible to an attacking force until they breasted the rise and were among the stones…. A closeup of these rocks can be seen in this great bubble jeopardy game here The legendary King Arthur and the wizard Merlin are associated with the area too.. Arthurs kingdom extended from Cornwall right up to Scotland and he’s reputed to have fought a battle in this area which would have been occupied at that time by local tribes after the Romans departed. More fascinating details especially regarding Merlins end can be seen here And another view from the hillfort as the weather blowings in from up the valley… / / / /
Bell’s Brae leading to Dean Village in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like most cities, Edinburgh started as a small town with lots of other towns and villages all around. Edinburgh has swallowed them all into its ever expanding boundaries. Dean Village is one of these. Few tourists know that 15 minutes away from Princes Street lies the secluded Dean Village on the Water of Leith. Once a successful milling community, the area was once associated with poverty and decay but the buildings have been turned into designer flats and the village is now a popular residential area. The name Dean means ‘deep valley’ as the village lies 30 meters below the rest of Edinburgh. This makes is quite unique and particularly tranquil considering it is virtually at the heart of Scotland’s Capital. There is a variety of architecture in Dean Village from the robust warehouses and mill buildings, the red sandstone cottage-style buildings to the more modern tenements of English influence. Beautiful Loch Ard in the heart of the Trossachs.
“The splendour falls on castle walls / And snowy summits old in story: / The long light shakes across the lakes, / And the wild cataract leaps in glory: / Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, / Blow, bugle, answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. O hark, O hear how thin and clear, / And thinner, clearer, farther going! / O sweet and far from cliff and scar / The horns of Elfland faintly blowing! / Blow, let us hear the purple glens replying: / Blow, bugle, answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. O love, they die in yon rich sky, / They faint on hill or field or river: / Our echoes roll from soul to soul / And grow for ever and for ever. / Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, / And answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying.” Lord Alfred Tennyson Canon 400D , Sigma 10-20mm + ND grad filters.F16 iso 100
