Here are some Quotes from the most awesome astrophysicist…
Here are some Quotes from the most awesome astrophysicist of our time Professor Stephen Hawking >I would like to speculate a little, on the development of life in the universe, and in particular, the development of intelligent life. I shall take this to include the human race, even though much of its behavior through out history, has been pretty stupid, and not calculated to aid the survival of the species. >There is no time, to wait for Darwinian evolution, to make us more intelligent, and better natured. But we are now entering a new phase, of what might be called, self designed evolution, in which we will be able to change and improve our DNA. There is a project now on, to map the entire sequence of human DNA. It will cost a few billion dollars, but that is chicken feed, for a project of this importance. Once we have read the book of life, we will start writing in corrections. At first, these changes will be confined to the repair of genetic defects, like cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy. These are controlled by single genes, and so are fairly easy to identify, and correct. Other qualities, such as intelligence, are probably controlled by a large number of genes. It will be much more difficult to find them, and work out the relations between them. Nevertheless, I am sure that during the next century, people will discover how to modify both intelligence, and instincts like aggression. >By the year 2600 the world’s population would be standing shoulder to shoulder, and the electricity consumption would make the Earth glow red-hot. >Clearly the exponential growth cannot continue indefinitely. So what will happen? One possibility it that we will wipe ourselves out completely by some disaster, such as a nuclear war. There is a sick joke that the reason we have not been contacted by E.T.s is that when a civilization reaches our stage of development it becomes unstable and destroys itself, However I am an optimist. I dont believe the human race has come so far just to snuff itself out when things are getting interesting >Within a decade, many of us may even choose to live a virtual existence on the Net, forming cyberfriendships and relationships >In the next few hundred years, human engineering may replace biological evolution, redesigning the human race and posing entirely new ethical questions >At present our computers remain outstripped in computation power by the brain of a humble earthworm. >The probability that Kip could go back (in time) and kill his grandfather is less than 1 in 10-with a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion zeros after it. Want to learn more? I have The Universe in a Nutshell book by Hawking, awesome book just to flip through, it covers gravity, theory of relativity, time travel, black holes, extraterrestrial possibilities….really amazing man with a lot of good info and theories to chew on!

About a week ago Lloyd Harvey commented on my photograph Beyond the Trees, saying that it reminded him of one of the early scenes of H. G. Wells’ book The War of the Worlds. He then went on to express a desire to take the image and turn it into what he was seeing. Never having done any sort of collaboration before, and being a big fan of the book (I read it many times as a child and own quite a few copies), I was intrigued by the idea. So, a couple of BubbleMails later we had a plan. Lloyd delivered the result to me today: I think he’s done a great job (and I do like the idea of a tripod getting ready to take on Billingborough) and the bulk of the credit goes to Lloyd: I just took a photograph, he did a lot of work creating the tripod and then processing the final result. Have a look at his page for the image for details on how he created the work. And be sure to have a look at his website too.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our mystery friend in Australia for buying ‘I Wouldn’t Dissect You’! You’ve made our weekend!! XD Dissection is cruel and unnecessary. With the alternative methods available today, schools can save thousands of dollars AND thousands of lives. Some things to consider are psychological impact, education, animal welfare, environment, cost, and chemical exposure. / / ALL proceeds will be donated to the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine. / / “To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can have.” / ~ Theodore H. That’s right the artist spends everyday struggling with art, trying to make something worthwhile, then on a night out meets the un-cultured person who has a dark and possibly psychotic attitude to artists. Not your average moron this time, but a partial physicist no less. One however that cannot handle the fact I do not care about monetary wealth but care more for art. He decides to spend an hour insulting me in an attempt to rile me to aggression. sure I eventually decide, I do not like him much and insult him back and state that I believe my art is at least as important as his science he eventually looses his cool and punches me full in the face. I take it. I’m a large guy, 6’ 3” and know from experience I can hurt people if i fight back, So i just take the punch and stand my ground. He though throws another and I take that one too, but still do not move or even react. By now the night club I’m in people decide to join my side, as I am evidently not the aggressor and many of them know me. and he’s kicked out. I haven’t faced this level of aggression since my early twenties and then i may have bothered throwing a punch back, but I’m older and wiser and feel my calm response is a growth and strength. And maybe it even proves art and culture is better than science and money :) I at least get to paint naked ladies and create things people will treasure and he gets to look for invisible partials that could destroy the world. I know which I think is the better life and more worthwhile, and don’t need to hti people to find prove it.

Science we are taught in school.. One law I remember well.. / You cannot create or destroy energy .. But only change its form. / I just read something from a very creative fellow named Christopher… / Poetry in motion @ 60K’s an hour. / I started to think about what he said and my perspective of life on earth changed. / I wrote him back and it makes total sense to me.. There is one way to create energy.. I believe you have created … I think everything we think becomes eternal. And therefore has energy. Which cannot be created in any other way and never destroyed.. Bravo.. / / I hope that everything we find and share is eternal.. What a wonderful place it would be if nothing beautiful was ever forgotten. Choice to feel and see memories crystal clear with anyone we have ever shared with.. And so many more we have not.. Now I know why life is so important and has made everything else part of the whole.. / Chuck /

I found an interesting work of art at an Ann Arbor yard sale. Took me two years to figure out the creator of that pencil and ink piece: Maude McVeigh Hutchins (4 Mai 46). Maude Hutchins made her name as an artist during the 20s, 30s, & 40s. Around 1950, Maude Hutchins began a successful career as a novelist. Her themes generally regarded sexual awakening. Maude Hutchins died in 1992 aged 102. Her novels are enjoying resurgent popularity. Before 1948, Maude Hutchins had been married to lawyer Robert Maynard Hutchins for 27 years. At age 30, in 1929, Robert M. Hutchins became the youngest president ever (still) of a major American university: U of Chicago. R.M. Hutchins remained in that capacity for 21 years before becoming the director of the Ford Foundation. He initiated educational reforms, many adopted by other institutions. Hutchins (who probably could have been president) was a pacifist who ironically became the principle contractor ($400 millions worth) in the creation of the first atomic bombs; he was the only civilian outside the Pentagon that officially knew about the Manhattan Project. You may recall that the first sustained chain reaction (Enrico Fermi 1942) was initiated under the abandoned U of C football stadium. Hutchins’ U of C contracts also included operation of the Oak Ridge, TN plutonium factory (WWII). After Hiroshima, Hutchins spent the remainder of his life opposing the arms race (died 1977). My fascination with Hutchins springs from his secular philosophical view of morality. From the time of his appointment as the Dean of the Yale Law School onward (mid 20s), he grappled with society’s need for moral education. Hutchins’ pointed out that the scientific method does not give us the knowledge or wisdom for how to manage science; it is something only a moral education can achieve. Nearly all of his efforts to inculcate morality into academics (outside theological schools), and later into corporate thinking, failed. I find Hutchins philosophical view interesting because I understand that a person’s moral view is a much higher standard than one’s minimum legal responsibility; and I can see that living merely to a minimum legal responsibility will not sustain the fabric of society— yet it is the trend. The problem for morality is that it is like both gravity and the very essence of life: we all know that it exists, but none have yet quantified it scientifically.

When the subject of sci fi art comes into a conversation, one can’t help but mention this amazing artist who has made a name for himself for his craft, imagination and his persona. We’re talking about none other than the very talented Tom Godfrey. Read on for some insights into the creative mind of a legend. Tom, welcome to the Bubble Couch! Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is the man behind these masterpieces? Firstly, thanks for the accolade. Masterpieces, I wish :) They were a lot of fun to create and probably reveal quite a lot about the inner me, but I feel I still have so much to learn and while I like aspects of most of theses digital paintings, there remain areas that aren’t quite there. It really is a journey I guess. / For me, it started a good few decades ago in Zimbabwe, where, as a young teacher, I volunteered to design programme covers for various sporting and cultural events. I discovered I had a fairly off-beat humour and indulged this in my early attempts at cartooning. This, along with running the art department and creating giant backdrops for my wife’s school plays, satisfied my artistic hunger. Years later I taught myself how to paint in watercolour and after joining a local society, I was lucky enough to sell a few land and seascapes. After moving inland to Johannesburg, South Africa, I experimented with acrylic wildlife paintings as these were popular at the time and I wanted to try to get onto the artistic map, even though I was a part –time hobby artist. I did sell some work which spurred me on. Your work is gorgeous and looks like a lot of pre-production planning goes into it. How do you go about starting off a piece? Again you are too kind, but my ego thanks you :) Sometimes the motivation is from an online competition theme and at other times I just start a pencil doodle, with absolutely no idea of where I am going. The moment a few intersecting lines start to look like something, I develop that idea. I used see the lines in 2D and I now realise I see the 2D shapes in a 3D perspective., which helps. 90% of my Sci Fi illustrations start as pencil sketches, which I scan and complete using Corel Painter. They can sometimes change a lot during this phase, while at other times I will leave a lot of the underlying pencil work for texture effects. So I guess most of my work is created intuitively. I am also quite lazy and don’t often bother to find ref material, a habit I must change. As an example, I am doing a motor-bike drawing at the moment, called “Out of Control” and the bike, is my idea of a bike, so the serious bikeys will probably fall over laughing :) Have you ever considered publishing a children’s book? Thanks to feedback from bubblers, yes I have. In fact bubbler K M Falcon has asked if I would like to collaborate with her on a book she has written for the early childhood age group. Negotiations are in the very early stages, but if it all pans out then I will let you all know. I am also considering writing and illustrating my own and have joined SCBWI (Society for Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators) with this in mind. I have not got any further than this at present, but it will be a serious member of my, “TODO” list for 2009. Do you do this for a living or as a hobby? I wish :) I am not yet making a living from my art, but I am working on it. Have you had any professional training in regards to your art? I majored in Art at the Teachers’ College I went to, but other than that I am self taught, barring a few kind mentors along the road. I taught art to primary school children for +_ 15 years and this was a great incubator for my imagination. How do you promote your work, both online and offline? Badly, I’m still not making a living from my art. :) RedBubble is without doubt my best promotional tool, although all the sales of my originals have been the result of people seeing them live and not online. My Sci Fi, Fantasy and Cartoon works have all benefitted from the online exposure and my rb sales have all, with a few exceptions, been from these images. What has been your most successful work on RedBubble? In terms of earnings, Cigarettes Can Kill-T and my 2009 Sci-Fi Calendar both share top spot. In terms of numbers sold Sea Creature and Siamese Fighting Fish are at the winners. What are some of the elements that inspire you? I am inspired by the concept of future and technology. Today’s Sci Fi – tomorrows reality. It’s almost like Sci Fi artists get a preview of a possible world, sometime, somehow. I also do not like to take anything too seriously -hence my cartoons. Who are some of your favourite artists on RedBubble? Or your favourite pieces of art? Too many to list and I would hate to leave out someone and risk offending them. A number of my favourite artists are so, not only because of their art, but also because of their natures as warm, humorous, communicators. What would you say to individuals starting off in this genre of art? Don’t give up your day job, but don’t have a day job that will leave you too tired for art. Develop your art consistently, with a light hearted, experimental nature until you start to discover who you are, artistically, and what story you would like to share with the world. Join the worlds best online artists and enter competitions –not to win, but to learn and share. If you win, that is a bonus. Finally three words of advice…Draw Draw Draw :) Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my thoughts on this amazing site, populated as it is, with so many diverse and creative minds, including all the people in the engine room driving RedBubble. Cheers all – happy bubbling… Thank you Tom for sharing so much about yourself with us. We hope that you have all the success with your future projects and we look forward to have you on here. Please do not forget us when you’re a royalty! - Faizan

Father Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, is a respected scientist who collaborates with universities around the world. The search for forms of extraterrestrial life, he says, does not contradict belief in God. The official Vatican newspaper headlines his article ‘Aliens Are My Brother’. ‘Free from sin’ Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, he speculates. Asked about the Catholic Church’s condemnation four centuries ago of the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo, Father Funes diplomatically says mistakes were made, but it is time to turn the page and look towards the future. Science and religion need each other, and many astronomers believe in God, he assures readers. To strengthen its scientific credentials, the Vatican is organising a conference next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the author of the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin. BBC News, Rome FORMER NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr Edgar Mitchell – a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission – has also stunningly claimed aliens exist. Mitchell claims alien contact cover-up! Daylight footage: UFOs over Europe / And he says extra-terrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions – but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades. Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as ‘little people who look strange to us.’ He said supposedly real-life ET’s were similar to the traditional image of a small frame, large eyes and head. He claimed our technology is “not nearly as sophisticated” as theirs and “had they been hostile”, he warned “we would have been gone by now”. statements and pieces of evidence can be so different from each other that one of them must be wrong. but what it shows.. / a creature from another world exists? / aliens from outer space? / so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God? / And some aliens could even be free from original sin? / who knows…

The size, dimension of the known and/or unknown Universe I just cannot comprehend. / I know I’m not alone in that. People have been asking questions on this subject for a long time. And probably will be asking for a long time yet. And as for a definition . . . well can it be defined? What is it exactly? A collection of things (planets, galaxies, suns, nebulae, comets and living things etc) in a vacuum. There lies another question. Other lifeforms?. Sentient lifeforms? We have SETI. Fabled little green men from Mars. Our imagination is rife. Although, even in our imaginations we still anthropomorphise largely when it comes to alien lifeforms. They don’t have to be carbon-based necessarily. There could be silicon-based life for example. Who knows? / But I digress. Back to “Big Picture”. The Universe. Why? How? What caused its being exactly? I know there was the “Big Bang” many millions of years ago. The cause of that well . . . I confess I don’t know. Was there a purpose there? An outcome? Questions aplenty. And what about black holes? The speculation and theory as to time travel and parallel universes? I digress again. / Big questions. Not enough answers yet. / We do know that it is governed by physics. On a scale so huge it is mind-boggling. And the fact that it is still expanding. And expanding in what?? Another question. Does that mean that the Universe is contained/inside something else. If so, the dimension of that unknown thing/container/object must be even bigger than the Universe itself. Again we are talking about mind-boggling dimensions and the distances involved. / Will we ever learn the answers to those questions? / Assuming there are answers to be had. / I know there are many indefinable concepts, perceptions, things that we encounter in our day-to-day lives but the dimension, size, function, purpose of the Universe is just one huge unknown. / / The mind boggles . . .

This is to those who still think with Neanderthal Minds about what I create, “computer art”. / When people learn I’m an artist I am asked what medium do you use, as soon as I mention the computer, I’ve lost their interest. To them if its created on the computer, then its not art. / And I like viewers to critique my work, both pro & con, but please let it be on the art itself, not on the choice of brush I use, and if you don’t get pleasure from what I create, then please view it and move on, its not for you. When we think of ancient art we think back before recorded history when Pro-Magnon was standing in caves and drawing pictures of the futures of his/her imaginations in pigments. / A giant step up from the scratching of Neanderthal Man. / But if truth be told we have come full circle yet again, we still “squat and stand in our caves” and use pigments on our walls. / Now our caves are what we call “modern” our “walls” are canvases, boards, papers, and in my case and many like me, the computer screen. / But to my way of thinking we are still the “ancients”, for in a few thousand years we will be considered ancients. / Our art will be viewed as “primitive” computer art but still art. / This is my choice of genre. / The ancients depicted our solar system and planets as they were imagined in their minds, this is what I and the artists of the “scifi” genre try to depict, as the other ancients imagined, so do we. And will those same future beings view our work and say” did they once visit, were they there before and the knowledge as been lost” / Many in the art world and elsewhere view what we do as nonsense, yet all “art” of our age, whatever genre, as being done before and is really based on ancient art. The human mind is a vast storehouse of imaginings past down through the human “gene” pool over the eons, how each individual uses it should not be considered nonsense or fiction until it can be proved what we depict on our cave walls is not how other worlds look. Its easy to say its foolish and a waste of time, but hey’ its our time to waste! “May you always create well and prosper with whatever brush you choose” Alienvisitor’s Imagi – Nation* AV

Alien Abduction…..not. Not that alien abduction wouldn’t have been nice, but they didn’t take me, I don’t think they had the time that day, worst luck. / Although maybe not, you may ask what they looked like, these aliens, but I never saw them, but I did feel an alien presence in my mind. / They didn’t ask me what planet this was, but they probably knew, and I’m sure they left something behind….... I keep getting these strange visions of alien worlds, and space scenes beyond Earth, and the visions become creations and sometimes there are descriptions of where these places are…................. So I guess in the few seconds they had, they filled my mind with these visions and stories, and they must want me to share this knowledge with the rest of humanity, and that they picked me,.........what an honour. I wonder, if the were so intelligent, why they didn’t know that the images would only be seen by a select few, and not all of humanity. But maybe they really did know this, and the select few who view them and enjoy these creations will be the catalyst to bring them to the rest of the human race. But probably not!! Still, I’ll keep churning them out, there are so many in there, often a vivid imagination is a curse, but I think in my case its a wonderful gift. So its a good thing they were in a hurry, or they would have taken me, like they did to so many others, anyway wherever they are out there, I thank them. And to my many fans who enjoy my creations…....many thanks for the looking and the comments. “May you always create well and prosper” Alienvisitor’s Imagi – Nation* AV

A kitty in Chongqing, China, is getting some extra-special attention these days: The furry feline has developed wings! Though born looking completely normal, once the cat hit the age of 1, he began growing wing-shaped appendages on either side of his spine, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reports. While some think the bony limbs may be a mutation of some kind — or even a Siamese twin growing inside the cat — others speculate it’s a genetic change perhaps caused by chemicals ingested by the kitty’s mother while she was pregnant. According to the cat’s owners, he doesn’t seem to mind his new wings — and he’s loving the attention he’s received because of them! Strange as the case may sound, winged felines are not unheard of. Back in August 2008, the U.K. Telegraph reported that tomcats in China’s Sichuan province developed wing-like growths on their backs. Veterinary experts said then that despite the hard inner core, the “wings” don’t harm cats’ quality of life or safety. According to the Telegraph’s report, scientists believe the appendages developed due to grooming habits, a genetic defect or a hereditary skin condition. / end. What are your thoughts?
