“Yeeehaaa,” roared Jim. His face creased with laughter and he felt somewhat light-headed, even with the benefit of a pressure suit. He turned to Frankie at his side. “Woah! That dive gets me every time.” “Me too,” chortled Frankie, “although it’s the first time we’‘ve done it with invisibility off.” Frankie gently tweaked the single control column, levelling the, “Frisbee” over the Yarra. “What we are doing will change Earth for ever, Jim.” said Frankie grimly. All traces of the euphoria they had both felt at the end of the swoop, had evaporated like the fog over the Yarra. “Someone had to do it”, replied Jim softly. His eyes betraying a sadness, at odds with his clipped comment. They dipped lower and slowed, drifting silently forward about 100 metres above the dark waters, reflected like some giant metallic Krispy Kreme. They needed to be as visible as possible to the morning crowds. The time for pretending, misinformation and outright lies, was over. No-one could stop them now. Ever since the days of the USAF’s infamous “Project Blue Book”, cover up. There had been a small group of dissenters, effectively silenced, through means both fair and fowl. After secret and careful preparation, their time had come. They had finally decided to risk all and act. Frankie tweaked the controls and then let the craft settle into its auto landing function. They touched down near to the harbour entrance and within minutes, helicopters and fighter aircraft from the Australian Air force were buzzing overhead, like angry gnats ahead of a summer storm. The nervous and expectant crowds lined every vantage point and cameras, both official and private clicked and whirred away – capturing and sending information at light speed around the globe. The ramp lowered and the crowds hushed as the men walked slowly and deliberately down and towards the awaiting media. Jim grinned again, exposing row after row of very tiny, but very sharp teeth…
The original concept sketch for, “Creature in Repose” “What seems to be the problem, chief? / “Nothing serious sir, we just seemed to have snagged the nets on something. We should be able to clear them soon…” The fishing trawler, Schnarly, inadvertantly awakens an ancient subterranean lava gobbler.
First fish Freddy of the original Siamese Fighting Fish clan, blasts off in his bowl. His mission, to avenge the insults levelled at his earth cousins, by grumpy humanoids. Aggressive and down in the mouth, indeed! He would show them, the water in his bowl was adjusting for space flight, shimmering slightly as the shock wave passed and he entered orbit. Soon he would shut down the hyperlink wormhole drive, drift gently into suspended animation, and wait. He clutched his shoalshifter, armed with the latest IRBMs (inter-reef ballistic missiles) and smiled, not that anyone would have noticed. He drifted into a deep sleep, as his bowl iced over and sped towards earth… My offering in a three-way collaboration. ChrisW wrote the story, “Dinner With Fighting Fish” and will add a ref photo. If my image fits Chis’ concept, then master paintograher, Cliff Vestergaard, will weave his magic.
I went out last night and got some good clear shots of the moon.
King Arthur, waits quietly for the ages to turn. He knows that there will be a time when the curse must be lifted, world order restored… and makeovers are much cheaper. :)
I am occasionally asked how I start the crazy pics :) This is my concept sketch for “Sea Creature” / The good-natured sea creature gazes benignly at the nervous Grinners as they swim past, in their usual backwards style. The poison blisters on the Grinners’ backs were fully inflated, as though they expected trouble. Observers in the underwater viewing deck, were making notes. Temperatures had risen alarmingly in the Nglishoop sea and creatures like the Blister-bodied Grinners were stressed as a result of these changes and their response was to remain in defence mode. This was costing them valuable energy though, as it was usually reserved for short fight or flight occasions. They were aware, in their remarkably evolved brains, that something was not right, but nothing in their evolutionary coding had prepared them for anything like this. These brightly coloured underwater imps, were a critical part of the reef biome and the researchers were worried. Although they were terrestrial beings, the observers knew that their lives were inextricably bound to events that occurred in this underwater world. Time was running out…
Again, with the eyes. the original face was split in two and both of the same sides were melded back together, tweaked the expression to knock out too much symmetry and voila. Made it to the Featured page! Twice! (2nd time on August 18, 2008) / Featured in the Fine Art Composites group on January 9, 2009.

The cliff face shimmered slightly as the craft slipped softly into the blue. They hugged the sheer wall until they were well clear, then dipped into the powdered soft whiteness beneath. It had been a while since their last meeting. Hopefully this one would go better… I have used this digital painting as the cover for my / 2009 Sci Fi Calendar /
Rebel Alliance symbol with a deconstructed look. *revised: After getting one myself I have shifted the design up a fraction and made the symbol slightly more red as it came out a bit brown originally. Please check out my other work:
Guess who? This is a variation of my London Calling entry for all my fellow sci-fi geeks. / Tom Baker’s Doctor Who was my first doctor. Then I fell out of touch for a while until Sylvester McCoy brought me back (although I think it was more of an adolescent crush on “Ace”). The new doctors of Christopher Eccelston and David Tenant have made pulp sci-fi popular again!
Deathbot brought me much lol so i decided to expand on his adventures. reminds me of a mate of mine actually… http://jeffreyphillips.com.au
A retro style 1940/50s style rocket blasts it’s way into orbit, or maybe to the Moon or Mars in time for tea with the Martians perhaps.
This is a facepaint I did a while back. I used WolfeFX make-up for the whole thing.
This droid has been resurrected and is ascending to sound.
