( 1620 views, at this stage. ) / I submitted this painting in the Inspired by Rembrandt competition, in the category of Group painting (Like the Nightwatch). The Inspired by Rembrandt competition was held, in 2006, to celebrate Rembrandt’s birthday, 400 years earlier. / / My painting was based on a photo which I had taken of this girl, while she was sitting beside me in the playground (while I was on playground duty). It was in a school in the Liverpool area of Sydney. / The boys were, of course copied from a painting by Rembrandt, the famous Dutch artist. / It then featured in my Remembering: an anthology , to celebrate my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008. / / And now a great up-date: / Donna found a class-photo, on another website. / Made contact and is now aware of the painting! / 33 years have passed since we sat on one of the metal benches, in the passage-way to the playground, at the back of that school. / . / While digging through my albums: / A long time ago, I copied these stills, from my super8 movie films. / Donna would have been in Year 4 that year and might remember this. / It was the Open Day Concert for the parents. / My third grade pupils did a History of The Dance (e.g., Charleston!) / These 6th Grade girls were grateful for my permission to allow them to mime to an Elvis song!! / Lots of hip-swiveling and therefore a bit daring, ‘cause there was a lot of shakin’ going on. / It was my first year in an executive position and I was allowed to have my way. :) / / . /
One teacher school, 1967. Henry Lawson: The Old Bark School / “But the old bark-school is gone, and the spot it stood upon / Is a cattle-camp in winter where the curlew’s cry is heard; / There’s a brick-school on the flat, but a schoolmate teaches that, / For, about the time they built it, our old master was ‘transferred.’ But the bark-school comes again with exchanges ’cross the plain— / With the Out-Back Advertiser; and my fancy roams at large / When I read of passing stock, of a western mob or flock, / With ‘James Bullock,’ ‘Grey,’ or ‘Henry Dale’ in charge. And I think how Jimmy went from the old bark school content, / With his ‘eddication’ finished, with his pack-horse after him; / And perhaps if I were back I would take the self-same track, / For I wish my learnin’ ended when the Master ‘finished’ Jim.
From TRAVEL, , SMH.com.au 37 years later…..... Maude / Tiny township on the banks of the Murray River / Maude is a tiny settlement 780 km south-west of Sydney via the Great Western and Mid Western Highways. It is 52 km west of Hay along a bitumen road which will take you past market gardens and the Four Mile Reserve where the river red gums make an ideal spot for a picnic or even an overnight camp-out. South of the village is the Yang Yang Reserve around the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. It was at this reserve that a survey was conducted by F.P. McCabe in 1849. A hotel was in existence beside a river ford by the late 1850s and a township was set out in the mid-1860s. The proposed name of Pimpaympa was rejected, the executive council choosing Maude for reasons unknown.
Two brave 3rd grade boys, a dam that still held lots of water and just hangin’ round, at lunchtime.
The last days (e.g., Christmas Party) at my first school, in 1966. / / Took a short time to get going but this was the first school where I finished each year with a backdrop to the stage, painted by the kids; where I entered teams in the Ballroom Dancing section of the Eistedfodd, held in Paddington. /
Swimming carnival. Mascot Public School, 1969. / A wonderful time in my teaching career.
The only place to keep cool, after school (in 1968, if you didn’t attend a pub or a club.)
Yesterday, in the art class, at Hazelhurst, one of the other students asked me if I’d ever participate in the actual activity that Melissa, the teacher was presenting. / It was asked with a smile. The actual answer would be: no. But I am very happy to attend the classes and, with one of the other students I agreed that it’s being with like-minded people, the supportive atmosphere and – this may seem false but – I considered explaining that that is why I participate in RedBubble, as well but it was not the time to launch into what RedBubble is. / I heard MB(artworks) do tht already, for Melissa, the teacher. / I ‘fled’ from another class, at Hazelhurst, last year, when after two terms with one teacher, someone else took over, whose style just did not suit me. That can happen. / Having a painting ‘on the go’, to take to Melissa’s class every Tuesday, to work on and get her advice, suits me fine. / This time I had left getting a new painting started VERY late. At abut 9:15 a.m., I rubbed the charcoal off a canvas of a picture that I did not paint ( mini-nudists in a tree) and quickly started this painting which had been wanting to be painted (again) for quite some time. / I have an earlier version, in acrylic, painted a lot of years ago. I am currently going through slides and this one was taken, in the playground, in 1966. / As I explained to some fellow students yesterday, I have tried to make the extensive collection of photos and slides, taken during 37 years of teaching available to the subjects (and their parents), in various ways, through the years, with little success. Wouldn’t it be good if this girl, now 41 years older, recognised herself? / Melissa (teacher) pointed out, again, that I’d got the length of the arm wrong. / I explained that that made me proud. The mother of my children, whose observations and knowledge I highly respect, used to point out to me how Renoir got the proportions of, particularly hands (in laps etc.) so wrong. / I have SO MANY Renoir prints and books!! / By 11:15 I had a very good start to the painting done. Ay 12:30 I began working some more on the painting, in the class, at Hazelhurst. By 3:15 p.m., I was pleased with the progress. /
The face of a young girl, who, one day, in 1975, sat beside me and the faces of two boys, originally painted by Rembrandt, who have never sat beside me. / Comments have been that viewers of this painting thought that Donna was crying. / No. She wasn’t.
Did not teach these boys. Were never in my class and were not soccer players. / So these are faces of boys whom I’ve never known. :) / (Also taken on the grass area, behind Mascot Public School, in the very early 70s. / (They should soon be in their 50s, now. )
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mascot P.S., 1969-1972. Great bunch of kids! Really! Suited me so much! At least three ethnic backgrounds represented here, including Greek and Scottish, if I remember correctly.
Stella’s not impressed. Kevin would prefer to sit next to a boy. Jean is bored. It’s 1965 and it’s Riverstone P.S. / ( Stella was an Aussie-Cloggie too! ) / ... / It’s about 43 years later and I know that Stella has seen this picture. / So good to catch up….... / ... / Stella might remember some of these teachers and scenes: / / Left: The deputy principal, speaking to one of the other teachers, in the playground. / The D.P., was very popular with the kids. / A long time ago, someone told me that in his last days there, he would doze off sometimes, at his desk and the kids would just let him sleep and they got on with their work. / I can believe that it was easy to do (Doze off.) / The teachers’ desks were beside the window, where the warm sun would come through, in the afternoon. / / It is very likely that Bill was sitting at that very desk, where I was sitting, in this picture.
This school was (is) near a part of Sydney where many Asian immigrants settled, some time ago.
Most people who have children or grandchildren are familiar with the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. When I spotted this very tiny spider (which I almost missed seeing altogether because it was so miniscule), I thought immediately of that childhood song. I took its picture and in PS, I placed the lyrics of the song right alongside it in remembrance of all the times I sang this with my children as they were growing up and am still singing it with my grandson who is now four. This may be a Mabel Orchard Spider, but I’m not sure. The field guides say it is 1/8 inch long. If anyone knows what kind of spider this is, I’d appreciate a word from you.
Maude-via-Hay, 1967. / ... / / ... / / ... / Was pleased to have met her parents too. I hope they are well.
Yep. One more from Bourke, 1968! :) Update: A position vacant, in the tourism inustry. Located in Bourke. MORE HERE
So many pictures, of the kids through 37 years of teaching. It would be so good if more of them found my pictures. I have tried, several times to set up sites, on the www to display these. / Meanwhile, I hope they’re appreciated for representing good times.
I drew this many years ago, to cover a scrapbook, filled with Christmas cards, some letters and other items given or sent to me particularly, during my early days of teaching. / It has spent many years in forgotten places, like very dusty cupboards. / / ... / / ... / / ... / / ... / Yes. That is mould. Sorry about that! Thank goodness for RedBubble. / The drawings were doomed to be never seen again.
I used to develop the black and white film and print these photos. / He’ll be in his fifties now! Wasn’t in my class. Just happened to be sitting there. /
I won’t rest, until I’ve found a way to reach more ex-pupils, who may or may not be aware of how much memorabilia I have, gathered at carnivals, open days, excursions, etc., etc.. / / I set up this social networking site / group, hoping they’ll drop in. / / This was Wendy, in 1966, at Riverstone Primary School. / (I’m picturing Basil Fawlty, complaining to himself, and the camera, about how his life has zip shot past, when he reminisces, to his wife about how happy they were once.) (LOL)
“Not everyone’s as sentimental as you are (about it)”, the teacher, at the art class, said yesterday. / I was telling her that, on the way to the coffee machine, in Hazelhurst I crossed paths with a very familiar school uniform, with a boy in it, who gave me a blank look. / Of course! / He may just have been in kindergarten (where I used to go and sometimes help, if a computer was playing up), when I was in my eleventh and last year of teaching at his school. / Time goes so quickly. It feels funny not being connected with these children, from the last school that I taught at, who come to Hazelhurst, (now) on the days that I attend the art class there. / .. / They have nothing to do with this painting. / It’s based on a slide, taken in 1975, at another school where I taught the kids ballroom dances for the school dances but we did square dancing for fun and for display on Open Day, during Education Week. / I happily admit that whenever one of the boys was a bit reluctant because the call from the good old record, in a strong American accent was a bit too complicated, I had such good fun taking his place. / It was just routine that the first few sessions would just be a mess. A tangle of bodies, arms and legs, as confusion set in and then gradually the movements smoothed out. / .. / Another admission: It really is time for better quality brushes and for really keeping them in good condition. / This impressionist style is what I’m hoping for. / I hope you see the paint and that the kids, moving, are a sight blur. / But must admit that it’s the condition of the brushes that add to the messy approach. / .. / It’s another (Aren’t they all?) that I painted for me. No doubt those kids, are now (sometimes) telling their kids (Not quite grand-children yet) about some of my strange ways but I really do remember my three years at this school as a lively, fun, creative, active, (Soccer!!! Art!!! Dancing! Performances! Etc., etc..) time! / .. / It will get a bit more work….but I couldn’t wait. (If you’ve visit my bubble before, you may have strayed across my description of how a boy whom I did not know at all, greeted me, in an unfamilar shopping centre, like I was his very best friend. / ... / Yesterday, in a similar situation, I came across boy who attends the last school that I taught at and retired from. / So seeing the oh so familiar school uniform, it felt as though he should have greeted me with the familiar: Hello Mr M!! But this kid had no idea who I was. And now it was featured in my Remembering exhibition, to celebrate my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008.
Am going through old negatives, old slides, photo albums (long since fallen apart, looking for any Bourke (1967-1968) picture that I might still have but the end is in sight. / / Karen popped up again. (Maude, 1967) / / My upgraded Apple gave her a different look (a different colour). / / Felt like showing her off again.
