In my 8th grade World History class, my teacher Mr. Billings wrote on one of my term papers: “To a gentleman and a scholar…” and I never forgot that. Here is an image I saw of mosaics on a NY Subway wall that I enhanced on PhotoShop that I call “The Scholar”.
This is a Pen & Ink and watercolor pencil wash of my Kitten Nari, laying next to my son’s Books. I played with the titles a bit to add a little fun.
this is my very first post for the year so I thought I’d put something a little more considered up…. sometimes in moments of lucid dreaming I think that I can’t remember my real name… not the name my parents gave me but a deeper name…. sometimes I have a sense of that deeper self within but it’s elusive and emphemeral …. but I think about it sometimes…... if I could remember my real name I’d have a better idea of what I’m supposed to be doing in the world…... if I could remember my name this is most likely what I be like…or that’s what I would like to think anyway …... so although this is not actually me…. it is also me…. just nameless. maybe this is from a dream… I can never be sure with some work…. this is one of those works….. anyway …. this started out in life as black and white 35mm negative that has been processed and scanned then digitally handcoloured
There are people who are able to take a Spiritual journey of knowledge and understanding on their own. The majority of us need a skillful teacher to direct, encourage and stimulate our awakening. The Teacher that has appeared today brings us wisdom and inspiration, as all good teacher’s should do. She is free from the constraints of her ego and will help us discover deity through the senses of emotions and humility.
Added sepia & matte effect to my original 2b drawing

The scholar always aspires to expand the knowledge for themselves, as well as for all humanity. The teachings are given for the community; to learn, to grow, to evolve. When time has taken them, few can recall their noble thoughts. There are some, however, that hold on to the ideals passed down through the ages. It is then when the scholar’s endeavors are rewarded… in the rising laureate. Dedicated to my sweetheart. My sweetheart and I attended a Renaissance Fair in Kansas City some years ago where, in an old building, I stumbled upon a dark corner of forgotten objects. I loved the look, the gathering of old pieces hardly looked upon, and tried my best to get a good photograph. I upped the ISO, which accounts for the noise, though I’m glad it turned out this way. The grittiness truly shows the aging, here. Canon EOS 30D DSLR

The Confucious Temple in Beijing has stone tablets dating back hundreds of years listing the names of scholars who had passed the civil exam to work in the government. China was the first country to offer a civil service exam that allowed anyone of any background a chance to improve themselves if they studied hard enough.

Almost fifty years ago, my father was fortunate enough to travel through much of Pakistan. Unfortunately, the photos he took were long neglected. Using the wonders of Photoshop, I’ve begun restoring his pictures. They were scratched, moldy, dust covered, and the colors were faded. I thought you might like to see photos of an exotic area before modern conflict caught up with it. Where possible, I identify the subject and location. Please enjoy. ** / Photo by Dave Shumaker / Restoration by Terry Shumaker
