A morbid history of St. John’s… the hill in the background is known as Gibbets Hil, it is where all the criminals were hung in public executions. The body of water at the base of the hill is where the executioner would throw the bodies when they were dead. The pond is known as “Dead Man’s Pond”. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado…..and how I love shooting up there when the winter weather begins to roll on in…the wind is bad, the air—-freezing cold, but the images that one can capture are filled with atmosphere and drama, case in point, this shot here. I about froze my butt off getting this shot of Mummy Mountain, but I wanted something that really showed all the detail here….that represented what it’s all about being a nature photographer in Colorado…... / Thoughts welcomed! / HDR blending used to bring out more dramatic light and detail / John

Late afternoon on a snowy day, County Derry, N. Ireland. Taken with a Canon EOS 50, Fuji Reala iso 100, +2 exposure compensation. Scanned, resized then post processed with levels and curves and a hint of usm. The day I took this photo, a snowy fog came down, and I lost all sense of directions. I wandered about for ages, very cold, and getting really scared.

As I was painting this abstract, I pondered the many meanings to the word “approach”...for example there is…. / The simple act of drawing near…. / A way, passage, or avenue by which a place or buildings can be approached; an access. / The temporal property of becoming nearer in time..e.g. “the approach of winter” / The final path followed by an aircraft as it is landing… / My painting is mainly concerned with the last two…I wanted to evoke both meanings of the word…it is the final curtain of autumn and winter is fast approaching..pockets of red and orange gleam here and there, as autumn stubbornly defies the chill, but at night the icy fingers of winter touches everything with frost..in the countryside snow drifts casually down, as if refusing to admit it’s here for good…another look at the painting evokes the final approach to land…stars twinkle in the night sky, the land shows the last vestiges of fall and the approach of winter….we are excited, relieved to have made it home safely once more... Watercolour on Aquaboard The half-stripped trees / struck by a wind together, / bending all, / the leaves flutter drily / and refuse to let go / or driven like hail / stream bitterly out to one side / and fall / where the salvias, hard carmine— / like no leaf that ever was— / edge the bare garden. Sienna and I wish you a very Happy Holiday Season!!! In August, I took this photo of Sienna watching the birds through my patio door. For this digital compilation, I replaced the “outdoor” scenery with a picture of a snowy pine tree from my yard, added snowflakes, and a slight orton effect to add a dreamy effect for the holiday season!! I really don’t have too much time on my hands…. my housework, holiday wrapping, cards, and cooking are waiting for me!!!!!
