Boreas Pass, Colorado…..one of my favorite places on the face of the Earth to shoot at….the fact that there is hardly anyone ever up here and the fields of Wildflowers go on forever really make this quite an extraordinary place. Located on the Continental Divide, it reaches an altitude of 11,481 feet high. The pass was formerly known as Breckenridge Pass in the 1860s, when it served as an early route for thousands of prospectors during the Colorado Gold Rush who crossed from South Park to look for gold in the valley of the Blue around Breckenridge. In 1866, it was widened to a wagon road that accommodated stagecoaches. In 1882, under the direction of Sidney Dillon of the Union Pacific Railroad , the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad (by then controlled by the Union Pacific) begun laying narrow gauge tracks up the pass, which Dillon renamed in honor of Boreas, the Ancient Greek god of the North Wind.
Inlet Hill from above. This is taken at low tide, which means a lot more of the sand appears. / This picture is taken on a simple Sanyo portable camcorder, with picture mode.
Amazing that such a cold morning can seem to warm in a photograph, all because of color and light….needless to say I was freezing when I shot this and cold tripods usually don’t tend to warm your hands up well lol / Captured at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado
A popular spot on Queensland’s Gold Coast / / /
glasshouse mountains south east queensland to the left is brisvegus and to the right all sorts of stuff
There is something to be said to be at 12,000 feet high, with nothing around but you, tons of Wildflowers, the mountains, and nature. Welcome to Boreas Pass, Colorado, a place that has become one of my favorite photography locations!
The weather was really beautiful and ominous on that day. Everytime the sun would peek out I would drop everything and set up my tripod. This is Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierra, Ca and I’m still amazed that I live so close to someting so beautiful. This trail eventually ascends Morgan Pass and up into the alpine High Sierras. You can see them in the far background. Created from 2 exposures blended together.
The wonderful scenery and wilderness that is northern Patagonia, Chile. This is shot from near Cerro Castillo, just outside the Torres del Paine National Park. You can see the Paine Massif in the distance and the truly blue Lake Sarmiento in the midground.
Captured high above Cherry Creek Reservoir outside of Denver Colorado, cosidering how cold it was, the warmth of the colors from the sunrise kept me a little on the warm side! The Marina lies empty below, awaiting Spring to return, which isn’t to far off I suppose. Anyways, I kinda lucked out on this shot considering I was standing on a 2 lane road with no pull off’s….thank goodness for no traffic! / —-John
Box Lake can be found in Eastern Sierra Nevada, California. It is in an area known as Little Lakes Valley. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. This is an HDR image.

Heaven’s rays pierce a summer storm that is hammering the distant Jemez mountains of New Mexico. The photo is black and white and has a horizontal orientation. This photo was taken from a hilltop along New Mexico State Road 503, near Santa Cruz Lake, just south of Chimayo.

Tanah Lot on Bali’s southern coast may be one of the most photographed Hindu shrines in the world. I shot of this one-off in 1976 at the start of my never-ending travels in Asia. A few days later I took the single Kintimani photograph (in my portfolio). My mother had given me her old camera, can’t even remember the make, but it was probably 20-30 years old back then, to record my travels around the world, which I figured would take about 2 years (hhmm, 33 years later and I still haven’t made it across Asia to Europe… yet!) It had a wonderful brown leather case, was fully manual, and I used kodachrome film, which meant months before I could see the results. I just rediscovered these slides, inspired by RB I suppose, and scanned them. They bring back some powerful memories….
Parque National Los Glaciales, Patagonia, Argentina !
I can’t remember the name of this peak. It was taken from the highway going from Calgary to Banff, Alberta in 2006. /
This was taken from the balcony of a condo I stayed in in Palm Desert, CA. I love the shadows of the trees in the foreground. :)
