the secret art of mopping the floor / Journal Entry: Sun Aug 12, 2007, 3:26 AM / OK i know the title is a bit well overtly romantic…but you try coming up with 300 different names for paintings that fit the imnages they represent reasonably well. I suppose this can only get worse as I get older, and to be honest I resort to going through all the songs on my computer and trying to find something that is cool, then changing it a bit. / More ranting… have been doing an awful lot of late. If you are really keen on the Catholic Church or are easily upset by profanity, I advise you NOT to read on. More ranting… have been doing an awful lot of late. If you are really keen on the Catholic Church or are easily upset by profanity, I advise you NOT to read on. 2.00 am on a saturnsday morning. Saturn, of course, being the roman god of the hearth but more specifically Cronos, from whom he was adopted, chief of the titans before they were overthrown by the gods. It was foretold that one day his children would kill him, so naturally he ate them all whole, but his wife Rhea (the original earth goddess, prior to Gaia, also Greek) fed him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes and Zeus was raised by the centaur Chiron on far away Crete. Until he was fully grown, at which point he fed his father a potion to make him vomit up his brothers – Poseidon and Hades. There was a war between titans and gods… the gods won and the sea was given to Poseidon, the sky to Zeus, and the underworld to Hades. Then it gets complicated, but anyway that’s why we have Saturday. He was also considered a god specifically of corn so we should all eat our corn flakes on the weekend. / Though I think Cronosday would be better since the Greeks came up with it not the Romans. / Gentle light and soft chords in the night. I hereby celebrate Cronosday by eating a clonazepam. Also the feast of Saturnalia was held um lessee EXACTLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME. Which was settled on as Christ’s birth 450 years AD. I can’t imagine such a time. Such chaos and devotion, idea after idea held to the point of death, of torture, by so very, very many. The martyr’s courage does not lose its sadness nor power because I do not believe in its cause. It gains pathos, but it becomes something so exceptionally, harshly sad. From Christ’s first sacrifice. So sad. Peter crucified upside down as he felt unworthy to emulate Christ. Paul offering his neck to the sword. James the great beheaded at the same time as his recanting accuser, offering the cups of their blood and skulls to the lord. I hate this I hate to make this comparison. It is NOT a comparison but it runs lines similar sleek with pain and luminous with symbology to the point of swelling my mind with twists and flinches at the thought of such violence. Remember 1984? The book; Orwell, not the year with the ra ra skirts and torn stonewash and mullets and the school beatings. No, Orwell, who had typed out the last words of the novel in a shack in the far Hebrides without power or hot water in the freezing winter while he slid and coughed and hacked and typed and died from pneumonia. / There was a scene. I shall never forget. I shall NEVER FORGET. After torture, true torture, absolute and requisite with blood and personalised horrors… Winston Smith is asked what two plus two is. He answers “four” and is tortured. He is asked again. He answers “five” and is tortured and tortured. He tries many combinations of numbers to escape his fear; his real pain. The torture continues, is intensified. Winston Smith is beginning to lose his mind. / Finally when asked what two plus two equals, he screams out “WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE”. And he is free.

Let’s talk…about anything? I’m a newbie around here. I recognize a few faces / pieces from around the web. However, most of the work I’ve seen is very refreshing and new to me. I’m instantly impressed by the amount of responses I’ve received in just a few days. I feel like the site has a few short comings as far as replies and comments. I would really like to be able to comment directly to each poster. It’s not necessary, but sometimes there are questions and it would allow them to know you responded without having to sift through all my comments just to keep checking. Categories. I’ve read a few different blogs already about the categories or lack of. It is nice to see everything because I respect all art mediums. However as a photographer, I would like to be able to just look at photos if I choose. But not a big deal. If anyone has bothered to read this far, then now I’m gonna take the time to say Thank You! I really appreciate the feedback and the opportunity to meet new artists. I’ve got a feeling I’ve already posted my best, so hopefully I can continue to grab others attention with some older stuff. New stuff doesn’t come that often…but I’ll be sure to post as soon as I think I have something worthwhile.

The content of this post was cut and pasted from here Austraia is set to say sorry to indigenous peoples on Wednesday morning around 8am. I found these myth busting statements really very good and relevant. Feel free to comment. I won’t be a round to respond but then again – I don’t need to ;) I have also posted this in the community forums under soapbox Cheers / Robert GETUP – PO Box A105 – Sydney South, NSW, 1235 Phone: 02 9264 4037 Fax: 02 9283 1371 info@getup.org.au www.getup.org.au The Stolen Generations’ Apology – 7 Handy Mythbusters There are many myths floating around about the apology so we’ve put together the following mythbusters. When you call up talk back radio, write to your local newspaper or are simply discussing the apology around the dinner table with family and friends, you can now consider yourself armed! Use the following facts and arguments and help get everyone on board with the apology. The language used here is deliberately colloquial – which we hope will assist you to convince your fellow Australians. Good luck! Myth 1 – I will not be made to feel guilt and shame for something I didn’t do Individual Australians are not responsible and should not feel guilty. ‘Sorry’ does not have tobe an expression of shame or guilt. It can be an expression of empathy, as in ‘I’m sorry to hear your friend died’ or ‘I’m sorry you got hurt in that car accident’. If people are still confused on this front, they might recall that several years ago, John Howard apologised on behalf on the nation to Vietnam Veterans for their poor treatment when they returned from the war. In any case the apology will not be made on behalf of the Australian people but rather limited to the Australian Parliament. Myth 2 – The Stolen Generations are a thing of the past Of all the Stolen Generations myths, this is one of the biggest. The facts are that the removal of Indigenous children continued well into the 1960s and early 1970s. These people are still alive today and the effect on individuals, families and communities lasts a lifetime (and beyond). Myth 3 – Saying sorry won’t deliver better results in health, housing or education Saying sorry is not of itself supposed to deliver health, housing and education. The / fundamental flaw of this particular objection is that it implies Australia can’t deliver practical outcomes while simultaneously delivering symbolic gestures. In other words, it suggests we can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. The government must also pursue practical measures to address Indigenous disadvantage, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t begin the process with a symbolic act. Myth 4 – It’ll cost us a fortune Contrary to popular opinion, a national apology will have no legal impact on the capacity of members of the Stolen Generations to seek compensation. The ability of members of the Stolen Generations to pursue legal claims has existed since they were taken and nothing changes that. As a nation, an apology costs us nothing. Myth 5 – The people who performed the removals thought they were doing the / right thing Good people do things that turn out to be wrong – but that doesn’t mean they’re excused from apologising. The majority of Indigenous children were removed from families not on the basis of the level of their care – but simply because of the colour of their skin. Many kids experienced physical, sexual and emotional abuse in their foster families and institutions after they were removed. For those people who believe that forced removal actually benefited the children – it’s pretty difficult to find a member of the Stolen Generations who is happy about being denied the love of their parents and extended family. Myth 6 – Saying sorry won’t change the past Sadly, it won’t. But it will have a massive impact on the future – Stolen Generations / members have already started healing since the promise to apologise was announced. An apology means an enormous amount to Indigenous people and the nation as a whole – and will cost us nothing. Myth 7 – Saying sorry just leads people to think everything’s been fixed Whether you’re for or against it, anyone who thinks that everything will be ‘fixed’ with the apology is kidding themselves. No-one is claiming that uttering the word ‘sorry’ is going to solve all the problems facing Indigenous Australians. Whatever your view on the apology, everyone agrees that practical actions still need to be taken. The apology is an important first step. Who are the stolen generations? The term ‘Stolen Generations’ refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities by policies of government, welfare and church authorities as children and placed into institutional care or with non-Indigenous foster families. The forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children began as early as the mid 1800s and continued until the 1970s. (http://www.reconcile.org.au/getsmart/pages/sorry/sorry—faq.php#1) The apology? A central recommendation of the 1997 ‘Bringing Them Home’ report was the need for a national apology to those individuals and their families and communities affected by past policies of removal. Members of the Stolen Generations have indicated that recognition by the Government that the policies were wrong would help in addressing the trauma and suffering that they have experienced. The need for a national apology is also regarded as an important component of the broader reconciliation process between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Nonnina said “Make sure you always love and honour your wife”. / I said “That’s it? Thanks Nonnina for giving me the easy job!!” LOL!! I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble...
I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble and wanted to let everyone else know what they can do about it! If you have not heard about the Orphan Works Act, then you should research it and speak out before it is too late (especially if you are an artist, writer, and/or musician)! No, this Act is not about displaced children or found animals. It revolves around works of art (including fine art, photography, writing, music, etc.) that are not registered with newly proposed agencies. ANY work not registered would be considered in the public domain. This is a dangerous concept and just goes to show how greedy and capitalistic our society, government, and big businesses have become. According to GoPetition.com: “If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free. In short, if Congress passes this law, YOU WILL LOSE THE RIGHT TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR OWN CREATIONS!” We would be forced into a world where big business can bully us and use whatever they wanted and not be penalized for it. And, this law not only affects artists, writers, and musicians. It also affect the everyday consumer! If you are planning to get your the photographs of your cousin’s wedding developed at a Wal-Mart or other big box retailer, then you better be prepared to get every image copyrighted or you may just end up seeing them on Wal-Mart’s billboards! Gone would be the days of having rights the minute you create something. Now, if you don’t pay to protect it, then it is like no one created the image and it is up for grabs! Who wants to live in this kind of world other than greedy politicians and businesses? And, it does not surprise me that this has all happened under the Bush administration. Who were the idiots that voted for him and thought he would do us some good? Well, seems like the joke’s on YOU! In an April 10th article in Animation World Magazine, award-winning animation producer/director and speaker, Mark Simon, writes: “It is currently against international law to coerce people to register their work for copyright because there are so many inherent problems with it. But because big business can push through laws in the United States, our country is about to break with the rest of the world, again, and take your rights away. With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense. This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk! If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free.” So, what can you do about it? I love reading people’s tags. When I go to photography exhibitions, I’m often drawn to the artists’ statements more than the images. On RB, I always take in the tags just as much as I drink in the images. I’m sure the photographers reading this are shaking their heads, but I’m equally sure the writers are grinning :) On a wintry night with the wind slamming against my window, I’m finishing off some writing for submission, and considering the themes that are woven through many of my words. I’ve been scrolling through the tags to my writing and wondering what they reveal about me; my themes, my obsessions, my traits. I’m sure anyone who knows me can make some predictions about the tags that reoccur: wench, whiskey, faith, ripe, madness, stilettos and ink all get honourable mentions. I can see that one recurrent theme for me is scents, for I often focus on this all too underrated sense: vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, pears. And my representative animal is undoubtedly the serpent, for words of snakes, hissing and Medusa pour out of me in infrequent bursts. I know what they symbolise to me, a shining mix of seduction, psychosis and rebirth, and this is why I have thirteen of them tattooed on my body. I am a little surprised, however, to see how often they poke their heads out of my pen, and shed their skins on my keyboard. But the tags that came up most, in order, are desire, regeneration, blood, honey, and gold. I do wonder what that says about me.

Heya everybody!! :O) I Use this phrase an awful lot and really there has only been ONE person who knew what I was on about. So I guess now is as good a time as any to give you a meaning to Chookas!! [and sorry, no it is not my nickname :O)] “Chookas” is a theatrical term for Good Luck that my mum and her cronies in the [Australian] National Theatre Ballet & Opera company made up back in the 40s 50s. Back stage in a theatre it is bad luck to say “good luck” [or whistle or mention “Mac…” That Scottish play :O)] and the usual wish of “Break a leg” is not a dancer’s favourite so Chookas was invented. / I use it now to wish people well – good luck & happiness and all that :O) and it is spreading! :O) / I taught it to the singers Kylie & Danni Minogue [and all the other students in our school when we were there in the 70s] and Danni was lately a judge on a TV show and she taught it to the contestants there and thus most of Australia who watched her :O) I think she’s spread it through the music field and It has spread down through the theatre other ways as I have heard it returned to me from other people I’ve not told! :O) See !! So Chookas! :O) PS and yes I really did know the Minogue girls They were in lower forms at my high school. Danni was an angel but Kylie was a tramp in the makings! She wore dresses with hems just under her nickers and her hair piled high and make up and jewellery to rival any hooker and she “Owned” one of the toilets – terrorising anyone who wanted to use them with threatened cigarette burns or hairspray in the eye. But alas all the males in the school, students & teachers alike, LOVED her! It was as if she had some spell she could wiggle her bum and chew her cud [chewy] and they would drool! What’s more Kylie had a thing for my younger brothers and would come over seeking them Mum & I would cover for them and send her away and my brothers would slide out from under Mum’s bed gratefully! / But even better I was her last choir mistress ….. and I chucked her out of my special 5 part harmony choir because she has an inner ear problem and goes off key when others sing around her! I told her “Stick to Solo work or BIG choirs where it wont be noticed if you go off the note!” We went on to win the eisteddfod … she went on …. well we all know what she went on and did! <) / Karma slapped me with watching her walk into “The Sullivan’s” TV shoot time and time again until the Producer / Director bloke shouted “Cut! Someone write a part for that girl and get her out of everyone else’s shots!” and THAT’s how she got into TV. Worse still they bought MY uniform off me for her to wear cos mine was the old one! >/ gggggggrrrrrrrrr man did we hate her! >/ Sometimes I shout to myself KEEP HAPPY!!!!! :O)

Drum roll please, / having a little fun here tonight…...champagne in hand….. (YES…ten big ones!!) / (No, of course I did not win that one ha ha) / Congratulations go to Philip Berry for taking out the major prize, awarded by three PERTH judges, but the thrill of the night was that in an exhibition of 86 works from top local and state artists, I received a Highly Commended for my artwork, which truly was a great honour, considering the amazing standard of work presented and the talented company I was in. And now, tonight was the Awards Night for this year’s Annual Busselton Photography contest, run by our Chamber of Commerce. Three talented professional photographers – Christian Fletcher, Roger Clark and Derek Poole were the judges and I was thrilled to come home with a First Prize (Digital Art) and a Highly Commended for two of my images that made it to the finals. In the Public choice awards, voted on by the people of the region, I also got a Third Place….. / so…... I have just had a glass or two of champers and wish to share my happy news with my good friends at Redbubble…... / So raising my glass, thank you for your friendship, support and inspiration….. / Cheers!

When the subject of sci fi art comes into a conversation, one can’t help but mention this amazing artist who has made a name for himself for his craft, imagination and his persona. We’re talking about none other than the very talented Tom Godfrey. Read on for some insights into the creative mind of a legend. Tom, welcome to the Bubble Couch! Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is the man behind these masterpieces? Firstly, thanks for the accolade. Masterpieces, I wish :) They were a lot of fun to create and probably reveal quite a lot about the inner me, but I feel I still have so much to learn and while I like aspects of most of theses digital paintings, there remain areas that aren’t quite there. It really is a journey I guess. / For me, it started a good few decades ago in Zimbabwe, where, as a young teacher, I volunteered to design programme covers for various sporting and cultural events. I discovered I had a fairly off-beat humour and indulged this in my early attempts at cartooning. This, along with running the art department and creating giant backdrops for my wife’s school plays, satisfied my artistic hunger. Years later I taught myself how to paint in watercolour and after joining a local society, I was lucky enough to sell a few land and seascapes. After moving inland to Johannesburg, South Africa, I experimented with acrylic wildlife paintings as these were popular at the time and I wanted to try to get onto the artistic map, even though I was a part –time hobby artist. I did sell some work which spurred me on. Your work is gorgeous and looks like a lot of pre-production planning goes into it. How do you go about starting off a piece? Again you are too kind, but my ego thanks you :) Sometimes the motivation is from an online competition theme and at other times I just start a pencil doodle, with absolutely no idea of where I am going. The moment a few intersecting lines start to look like something, I develop that idea. I used see the lines in 2D and I now realise I see the 2D shapes in a 3D perspective., which helps. 90% of my Sci Fi illustrations start as pencil sketches, which I scan and complete using Corel Painter. They can sometimes change a lot during this phase, while at other times I will leave a lot of the underlying pencil work for texture effects. So I guess most of my work is created intuitively. I am also quite lazy and don’t often bother to find ref material, a habit I must change. As an example, I am doing a motor-bike drawing at the moment, called “Out of Control” and the bike, is my idea of a bike, so the serious bikeys will probably fall over laughing :) Have you ever considered publishing a children’s book? Thanks to feedback from bubblers, yes I have. In fact bubbler K M Falcon has asked if I would like to collaborate with her on a book she has written for the early childhood age group. Negotiations are in the very early stages, but if it all pans out then I will let you all know. I am also considering writing and illustrating my own and have joined SCBWI (Society for Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators) with this in mind. I have not got any further than this at present, but it will be a serious member of my, “TODO” list for 2009. Do you do this for a living or as a hobby? I wish :) I am not yet making a living from my art, but I am working on it. Have you had any professional training in regards to your art? I majored in Art at the Teachers’ College I went to, but other than that I am self taught, barring a few kind mentors along the road. I taught art to primary school children for +_ 15 years and this was a great incubator for my imagination. How do you promote your work, both online and offline? Badly, I’m still not making a living from my art. :) RedBubble is without doubt my best promotional tool, although all the sales of my originals have been the result of people seeing them live and not online. My Sci Fi, Fantasy and Cartoon works have all benefitted from the online exposure and my rb sales have all, with a few exceptions, been from these images. What has been your most successful work on RedBubble? In terms of earnings, Cigarettes Can Kill-T and my 2009 Sci-Fi Calendar both share top spot. In terms of numbers sold Sea Creature and Siamese Fighting Fish are at the winners. What are some of the elements that inspire you? I am inspired by the concept of future and technology. Today’s Sci Fi – tomorrows reality. It’s almost like Sci Fi artists get a preview of a possible world, sometime, somehow. I also do not like to take anything too seriously -hence my cartoons. Who are some of your favourite artists on RedBubble? Or your favourite pieces of art? Too many to list and I would hate to leave out someone and risk offending them. A number of my favourite artists are so, not only because of their art, but also because of their natures as warm, humorous, communicators. What would you say to individuals starting off in this genre of art? Don’t give up your day job, but don’t have a day job that will leave you too tired for art. Develop your art consistently, with a light hearted, experimental nature until you start to discover who you are, artistically, and what story you would like to share with the world. Join the worlds best online artists and enter competitions –not to win, but to learn and share. If you win, that is a bonus. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I shall show you many pictures and thusly be brief: I just sent this to one of my sister’s with a subject line about how she should prepare to die of a heart attack. Weelah! I have no idea what would prompt him to dress that way, but, I hope if I ever marry again, something will prompt that man to dress relatively the same! That’s the classic, male “What? What is this? How do you work it? You put coffee grounds in? Where?” morning look. Very cute, it is, too! Don’t know what that look is, but, I’m all for it! Well, not into crosses, mind; but, then, how many of us look at that picture and, first thing, go “Oh, look! A cross!” Yeah, I thought so! Anyway, that’s all I had to say, really. I hope you don’t mind me bringing that subject up! .................... That was all I had to say. Now I say: Read this!, because it is funny, weird, and good advice!

I don’t really know where to start this journal. All I know is I have to thank an awful lot of people … very special people who have featured both myself and my work. Just when I’ve been feeling a little washed out and critical of my own work I have had my confidence boosted to the highest limits. Darren Stones from The Australian Travel Photography & Writing Group gave me the ultimate compliment by interviewing me HERE / and linking many of my images and written pieces to the page. This was a wonderful challenge and I thank him for how the interview was conducted and portrayed. This group is a wonderful place to showcase Australian Art and writing, and offers full encouragement to those striving to enter the field of photojournalism. To me this group is GOING PLACES thanks to Darren. Just when I was getting down off that high, I was notified by Heather Parsons from the History Group that I had been made a feature artist in the group … wait there’s more! Heather then asked me to choose 12 of my images to be featured on the group’s overview page HERE Now this sent me skyrocketing through the ionosphere and heading for the moon. I have been preoccupied this last week with work, family and flu so on checking my mail I find that there is still more (if that’s possible) to crow about. / Flight From Strezleki – Newcastle NSW featured in A Vision of Flight Group Ray of Light Reflection – Dora Creek Bridge NSW featured in Stream Crossing Group Ocean Splendour – Caves Beach featured in the Central Coast & Hunter Group Polar Express featured in the Nostalgic Art & Photography Group The Garden Below featured in the Backyard Art Group Thank you to everyone involved – the hosts and my Red Bubble friends for the interest and encouragement.

A wise man once said to me “That’ll be 3.98, do you need a bag?” which got me to thinking, what if I can double the love of this Picture/T-Shirt of the Week concept? How about when you lovely bubblers, on your day to day travels around the site, notice any new people that make your eyes open slightly wider in awe, you come back here, to a ‘special place’ I will make. Then leave a link, and a comment as to why you like an image or tee of theirs. Then I’ll pick the best new work, and pimp you both up in my weekly post. Might even send you both a special medal or something. What do you think? Go on, I can take it…

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short. I implore you to please take the time to watch this brilliant short film. 5 minutes out of your life that I believe is well worth it

So this is the journal I attempted to write earlier under the Happy Solstice title! I did of course want to wish you all a happy Solstice. I have felt many wonderful gifts come my way today and I am feeling very grateful! / Firstly, I wanted to show off my Original Lynnette Shelley piece that I just framed up. Lynnette and I did a trade which I am always a big promoter of. For one thing, as artists we all love original art, but if you are like me you get tired of looking at your own stuff. It is so nice to have someone else’s work on my walls. Here is her work on my dining room wall: / / Another wonderful thing going on for me right now is my reception over at the “Host Hullaballoo” happening in Solo Exhibition right now. I will have 12 of my works featured on January 29th, but for now you can stop by and say hello at my reception. I have already received some wonderful supportive comments and I am again very grateful! / Lastly, I just found out today that I will be in a group show starting on January 9th at a local coffee shop called Common Grounds. So far, I have been a little shy about showing my work locally. I feel this is my first baby step to breaking out in the local scene and I am very excited and ready to do it! / So again, thankyou to all of you that responded to my last journal, don’t know what happened there (and hope it doesn’t happen with this one too :).
