Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars, tracing paper makes a great diffuser and a trip to a hardware store will give you very bright lights. Yes, there are downsides, and for the technically perfect photographer, these suggestions will be a very funny joke. The point here is keep and open mind and try new things before forking out $100 for a piece of shiny material that resembles a $5 dash board cover. Unless you use a biscuit tin to take photos, eventually you will want to buy a new camera. Shop around, get advice, try out a friend’s and when you walk into the shop, don’t spend hundreds of dollars on accessories that you wont’ use. It doesn’t hurt to haggle a bit either. When the salesman tries to close the deal, my typical response is “what else are you throwing in?” Studio Hire So the first question you ask yourself is “Do I know anyone who already has a studio set up?” If the answer is yes. Skip the rest of this section, suck up your pride and ask them if you can visit and have a play. The rest of you, ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it the chance to get a professionally lit shot? Maybe you could try a lighting course that will not only give you many opportunities to work with professional lights, but will teach you the theory and science of lighting. Often these courses are much cheaper than a similar amount of time in a rented studio. Do you want to try shooting in more controlled conditions? Try clearing out a room of your house and setting up a few scenes. The results may not be brilliant but it will give you a sense of how much time you can spend setting a shot up before you get to click the button. If you are certain that a proper studio is for you, consider hiring it out through a camera club for a discounted rate, or hiring it out with a couple of other photographers to minimise your expense. Models and TFP Models and photographers have one thing in common – they both need a portfolio of photos to proceed in their career. This is why Time For Photo shoots have become so popular. But before you jump up and down about using a free model take a second think about what is fair and ethical. At the end of the day, both you and the model should be happy with your arrangement. If someone feels short changed, you should consider modifying your approach. This is my rule of thumb. If a model approaches me to take shots for her portfolio, and I am working to her brief, she should pay me. If we have put our heads together to come up with a project and proceed on equal footing where we both use the images, then neither should pay. And if I conceive and art direct the shoot and have priority over the image rights, I should pay the model. Basically whoever comes out on top should be paying the person who is doing them a favor. Then there are test shoots, these are almost always done on a time for photos basis. These shoots are a bit like ‘warm up’ shoots for the model and photographer to see if they want to work together properly. They are also a chance to test new ideas or equipment. Often the images taken in test shoots are less than great, and if they do turn out, they are most commonly shared equally between all parties. If you are requesting a model release form because you intend to profit from the images, in my opinion, the model should be paid or you should have an arrangement to split any profits. My plan of attack is to put out a call for models. Then I will do a test shoot with the model who has contacted me and we either have equal rights to the shots or split them down the middle. If the test shoot goes well we may arrange to work together again. This might mean doing an even split of “her ideas” and “my ideas” for no payment, or it may be paid work if I am contracted to produce shots for a commercial job. It has been overwhelming to see the instant support and compassion fellow Aussies have shown to the victims of the fires in Victoria. The money and assistance coming in is simply amazing. And I feel such warmth and kindness flowing in from all corners of the world! Thank you so much to everyone for your open hearts and willing hands! The shiny side of humanity is really evident at times like these. But there are millions of silent victims that are being overlooked by the majority of those who are helping or raising funds, and they are the creatures of the Australian Bush, and the domestic animals, left burned, scarred, and without homes after the fires. It is an horrific fate for them. For those who were killed, their suffering is over and they are in a better place, but for the many who survived and are still out there, desperately in need of veterinary care, water, food, and just some kindness…. their need has never been greater. It is up to us to recognize and help them in whatever way we can. / Donations of money to the various wildlife organizations is one way to do this, if you cannot go and help in person. A group of wonderful people here on Redbubble have set up a Wildlife Appeal site similar to the Phoenix Appeal where Redbubble members can donate pieces of art with the proceeds going directly to the wildlife fundraisers. Please check out this site and try to donate a piece of art. The creatures need us to help them too, and they don’t have the media to bring their plight to the world as the humans do. They suffer in silence. And it breaks my heart. I have pledged the proceeds of sales of all my art from my InAWE pages to this cause and hope that others might do likewise. If you wish to donate art, just bubblemail the wildlife appeal and get the address to send the images to. They do not have to BE of wildlife or animals…any artwork will be greatfully accepted…... then just help by spreading the word to others about this second means of supporting those whose lives have been burned by the fires. First we all want to thank Everyone for donating their beautiful work, the buyers who bought things to help us out, and of course the people on the Wildlife-Appeal group, who have started contacting us to make their pledged donations on behalf of the wildlife-appeal. Without everyone helping out as they are doing, this donation to help those animals who are still fighting for their life from the bushfires of Feb. 7th, 2009 wouldnt have happened. / I didnt realize the currency exchange when I put in the amount of the donations, so this was done in three parts to get to the amount for US dollars that was switched to AUS dollars. Really need to get myself a currency exchange chart around here. / From what was sent, it totaled up to $275.00 AUD from the wildlife-appeal account. / The donations sent from people who donated their proceeds totaled up to $68.00 AUD / Bringing our total to date 03/05/09 to $343.00AUD I think this is an outstanding start to the appeal we have all chosen to participate and support. Everyone should feel proud and feel like they did, have and Are making a difference in helping! This cause by no means is over. We still need to get the word out. As the fires in Austalia seem to die down, it doesnt mean all is over and done with. There are many who still need our help. Many animals and people. Two tales…. One story four years ago….. an amazing tale with an even more special ending….perhaps if you read the story I wrote back in 2005 – the Day of the Whales it will help balance out the following more disturbing story. You see, that story was nearly four years ago. / This story – was this week, and again our south west shores have seen the heartbreaking and incomprehensible mass strandings of many cetaceans. Eighty seven whales and five dolphins were found stranded on the beach at Hamelin Bay early Monday morning. / Over seventy of the long finned pilot whales died there on the shores, along with the dolphins, with only eleven whales surviving until yesterday morning. Over 200 volunteers from the community and various groups, together with wildlife officers and veterinarians fought to provide relief and save these amazing creatures over the past two days and nights. / / Humans Caring The level of dedication and care by those who give everything to help the distressed whales is a very tangible and powerful energy. The connection between humans and cetaceans is a deep and almost primeval urge, our need to be near them, to know them, and to create interactions, is often beyond our understanding. But the emotions evident amongst all the human carers in these situations are real and a testimony to that mysterious link between our ocean dwelling friends and ourselves. Yesterday, the surviving eleven whales were transported over land to the calmer but deeper waters of Flinders Bay on the opposite side of Cape Leeuwin to Hamelin Bay. It was hoped this would give them a greater chance of returning to the open sea and thus surviving. Once lifted from the Hamelin Bay beach with cranes, Large trucks were used to transport the whales in this desperate and unique attempt to save them, and after the 15 minute journey, another huge crane was used to lift them in slings and move them down to the ocean where volunteers guided them into the water and kept them calm and still until they were all together. It was feared if some were allowed to head out to deeper water too soon, the distress calls of those left behind would only cause them to rebeach themselves. / Volunteers hold the whales in Flinders Bay, while waiting for the rest of the survivors to be transported to the safer harbour / A crane lowers the whale down into the waters of Flinders Bay, Augusta One whale reacts as it finds itself back in the ocean, dowsing those all around with the spray….either with frustration at being held captive by humans or simply joy at being back in the water Volunteers get up close to administer care to the surviving whales Once the eleven were all in Flinders Bay, they were guided out to deeper water by volunteers and professionals using boats and various other means. One female became extremely distressed and had trouble breathing, finally heading back into shallow waters where the decision was made to euthanize her to end her suffering. And then there were ten… / After suffering so much, what would this whale be thinking as he was lowered on a crane towards the water? After witnessing the live whales being returned to the sea, I felt filled with hope for them…. but wanted to pay homage to those who had not made it. I wandered along the shore of Hamelin bay and silently viewed what could only be described as a scene of carnage. Front end loaders and trucks lined up to move the huge whales, some measuring up to six and half metres and weighing three and a half tonnes, to a disposal site. It was a gruesome sight on that once beautiful beach, to see the whales going to their final resting place in the arms of heavy machinery rather than the gentle caress of ocean waves. It almost seemed blasphemous, but these beautiful creatures had long gone home to better places and the need to remove so many carcases was a nightmare that had to be attended to as soon as possible. Sharks had moved in and bites were taken from any whales that remained near the water. The bay itself had become a potentially dangerous place with the sharks being lured in by the potential of easy food. It is not even sure if sharks had attacked these large whales before they were stranded as many on the shore were scarred and marked with wounds. On this sad beach, and surrounded by the sadness and death, humans worked with respect and silence as the whales were still “taken care of” with dignity and sensitivity. I still wonder what makes these majestic and intelligent creatures commit such an act of destruction upon themselves. And why our corner of the world has such a regular occurrence of these mass strandings. According to the DEC, there have been at least 21 instances of mass strandings of whales and dolphins along this coastline since 1984. Some say it is the gentle slope of our beaches that confuses their radars….. some believe that more human intervention has created confusion or damage to their sonars or health, in the form of military sonic testing under the ocean…..in some cases strandings have been linked back to US naval exercise in the regions where whales have washed up onto beaches. Could it also be the series of recent earthquakes felt across the fault lines of Australia? Is there some chance that beneath the sea, the effects of these disturbances are felt by the sensitive cetaceans? Or is it that when a lead whale of a pod becomes old or unwell, that they make a choice to take themselves to a quiet beach to die, rather than risk being torn to shreds by sharks in the open ocean, but unfortunately, due to the loyalty and incredible social nature of whale pods, the others follow their leader into dangerous situatons? / The sad beach / the silent wave goodbye / The sign says it all We might never quite know what causes these horrific occurences, but one thing is very evident to me as I witness or take part in the ensuing scenes – That for all the large numbers of people who rush to the scene to help and strive to save the whales, these beautiful creatures are doing just as much to help and heal the humans who get in the water with them, or seek to touch and comfort them. It is almost as if the healing and care extends both ways, as anyone who has taken part in “saving the whales” will tell you….their lives have been enriched and changed forever by the experience, by that touch, that look in the eye, by the sounds of whale song or language, or just the invisible communication that passes between human and cetacean at a time when it is often impossible to know which one needs the other’s presence more. In the case of this story, the sadness continues, as of the ten released to the sea, six have since died and only four remain alive, but at this point in time, travelling safely out to sea in a group. The one redeeming factor in all this tragedy is that for all the deaths, there are still some alive who would not have survived without the care of countless individuals with big hearts and helping hands. And that the most important memory to take away from this is not the tears or sorrow and regret for those who did not make it this time but the symbolism of four whales swimming bravely back out to sea, to reclaim their existence and continue their journey. As many of you who have read my previous journals know I am with a few other huge hearted photographers and artists, donating the proceeds from sales from our work at the wildlife-appeal / The agency we are helping, the Wildlife Rescue and Protection Inc (WRAP), has some animals that need to be “adopted” / The caregivers (carers) that are trying to help these animals with the injuries they sustained from the bushfires that raged thru Victoria and surrounding areas. I have been emailing with Racheal on how we can help get these animals adopted. Right now there are only 6 left, but she did state there will be more to come. This is how it would work. As with any sponsorship with children, zoo animals, and pets, you would recieve a certificate of adoption, updates, and photos every three months. / If you cant do this yourself, I cant plead with you enough to pass this on, eventually there will be someone that can help out with the animal survivors of Black Saturday. For those of you already involved with adoption programs, please pass this on to your friends and everyone else. I will be contacting local businesses and some schools in my area to see if they would like to adopt one of these amazing animals, you can do the same. MWM: This long letter to humanity appeared with no apparent return address. It is being posted here and there. This is another Internet piece for which I cannot assess the validity. All I CAN say is that it sounds like a good idea, is coherent, and is written skillfully at a level of intelligence and maturity with I would associate with a serious, non-technical, matter-of-fact level of discourse. It is not ethnically loaded and the writer has a very good understanding of language and human psychology, though there are a few moments where the grammar is different than we are accustomed to and there are a couple of language errors. Most importantly, it makes no reference to impossible constructs, faux-tech, nor any type of religious or New Age buzzwords. This is as clean a straight-shooting letter, as you will find. Accordingly I am sending it to you to “vet” it and see what our Phoenix Five brain trust surmises about it. I am also sending it to you because it might be real. The main assertion in the letter is that human civilization is now in an uncontrollable free-fall implosion which cannot be “fixed” from within existing social systems. The implosion is causing, will cause a major rupture in all human orders. There is a dark road down toward the use of technology to rapidly enslave human populations in a badly degraded and unhealthy environment. Those who are defining this path, many of them unintentionally, have the greater advantage of power over resources and may gain the upper hand during the coming rupture. There are many who would take a liberating path, they could gain the upper hand if they UNDERSTAND THE CHOICE and can lose their fear, sense of isolation, and ignorance about the true state of affairs. The main proposition in the letter is that the mass appearance of ET in the skies now could help humanity clear away the veils of illusion and deceits, help settle many existential issues and dilemmas, and provide an “attractor” to help pull positive mentalities out of the social death-vortex and enable them to refocus the next stage in evolution. The main question in the letter is whether you want ET to thus show UP. ET suggests that direct contact and some cultural assistance would provide the means to overcome the major blocks in human social and cultural evolution. ET argues that the mental/emotional ground needs to be prepared for such contact. Consent and expectation for such contact needs to be created around the world, less humans react in mass with fear and become manipulated by reactive power elites. ET suggests that a focused telepathic answer from each reader will be sufficient to assist ET is reaching a conclusion about what it should or should not do. Even as the internet is achieving universal penetration during this time, ET requests that this letter, its first mass communication, be universally translated and transmitted throughout the world. Many human beings have been in visual, auditory, tactile or psychic contact with such ships, some of which are under occult powers that govern you. The scarcity of your observations is due to the outstanding advantages provided by the dematerialised state of these ships. By not witnessing them by yourself, you cannot believe in their existence. For negative multidimensional beings that play a part in the exercise of power in the shadow of human oligarchy, discretion is motivated by their will to keep their existence and seizure unknown. You are the offspring of many traditions that throughout time have been mutually enriched by each others´ contributions. The same applies to the races at the surface of the Earth. Your goal is to unite in the respect of these roots to accomplish a common project. The appearance of your cultures seems to keep you separated because you substitute it to your deeper being. Shape is now more important than the essence of your subtle nature. For the powers in place, this prevalence of the shape constitutes the ramparts against any form of jeopardy. The education of your children and your living conditions, as well as the conditions of numerous animals and much plant life are nevertheless under the thumb of a small number of your political, financial, military and religious representatives. Your thoughts and beliefs are modelled after partisan interests to turn you into slaves while at the same time giving you the feeling that you are in total control of your destiny, which in essence is the reality. But there is a long way between a wish and a fact when the true rules of the game at hand are unknown. This time, you are not the conqueror. Biasing information is a millenary strategy for human beings. Inducting thoughts, emotions or organisms that do not belong to you via ad hoc technologies is an even older a strategy. Wonderful opportunities of progress stand close to big subdual and destruction threats. These dangers and opportunities exist now. However, you can only perceive what is being shown to you. The end of natural resources is programmed whereas no long-term collective project has been launched. Ecosystem exhaustion mechanisms have exceeded irreversible limits. The scarcity of resources and their unfair distribution – resources which entry price will rise day after day – will bring about fratricide fights at a large scale, but also at the very heart of your cities and countrysides. Hatred grows bigger but so does love. That is what keeps you confident in your ability to find solutions. But the critical mass is insufficient and a sabotage work is cleverly being carried out. Human behaviours, formed from past habits and trainings, have such an inertia that this perspective leads you to a dead end. You entrust these problems to representatives, whose conscience of common well-being slowly fades away in front of corporatist interests, with those difficulties. They are always debating on the form but rarely on the content. Just at the moment of action, delays will accumulate to the point when you have to submit rather than choose. This is the reason why, more than ever in your history, your decisions of today will directly and significantly impact your survival of tomorrow. What event could radically modify this inertia that is typical of any civilisation? Where will a collective and unifying awareness come from, that will stop this blind rushing ahead? As is also the case with humans, resistance exists amongst those dominant races. Here again, appearance will not be enough to tell the dominator from the ally. At your current state of psychism, it is extremely difficult for you to distinguish between them. In addition to your intuition, training will be necessary when the time has come. Being aware of the priceless value of free will, we are inviting you to an alternative. What can we offer ? We can offer you a more holistic vision of the universe and of life, constructive interactions, the experience of fair and fraternal relationships, liberating technical knowledge, eradiction of suffering, controlled exercise of individual powers, the access to new forms of energy and, finally, a better comprehension of consciousness. We cannot help you overcome your individual and collective fears, or bring you laws that you would not have chosen, work on your own selves, individual and collective effort to build the world you desire, the spirit of quest to new skies. Should you decide that such a contact takes place, we would rejoice over the safeguarding of fraternal equilibrium in this region of the universe, fruitful diplomatic exchanges, and the intense Joy of knowing that you are united to accomplish what you are capable of. The feeling of Joy is strongly sought in the universe for its energy is divine. What is the question we ask you “DO YOU WISH THAT WE SHOW UP?” How to can you answer this question? The truth of soul can be read by telepathy. You only need to clearly ask yourself this question and give your answer as clearly, on your own or in a group, as you wish. Spreading this message will then be the hand-hold to strengthen, we will be the light-years long lever, you will be the craftsmen to … raise the Earth as a consequence of our appearance. What would be the consequences of a positive decision ? For us, the immediate consequence of a collective favourable decision would be the materialisation of many ships, in your sky and on Earth. For you, the direct effect would be the rapid abandoning of many certitudes and beliefs. A simple conclusive visual contact would have huge repercussions on your future. Much knowledge would be modified forever. The organisation of your societies would be deeply upheaved for ever, in all fields of activity. Power would become individual because you would see for yourself that we are living. Concretely, you would change the scale of your values! The most important thing for us is that humankind would form a single family in front of this “unknown” we would represent ! In the absence of human representatives who could potentially seduce into error you ignore everything about us as well as from about those who manipulate you without your consent. In your situation, the precationary principle that consists in not trying to discover us does no longer prevail. You are already in the Pandora´s box that the “third party” has created around you. Whatever your decision may be you will have to get out of it. In the face of such a dilemma, one ignorance against another, you need to ask your intuition. Do you want to see us with your own eyes, or simply believe what your thinkers say ? That is the real question! After thousands of years, one day, this choice was going to be inevitable: choosing between two unknowns. Why spread such a message among yourselves? Translate and spread this message widely. This action will affect your future in an irreversible and historical way at the scale of milleniums, otherwise, it will postpone a new opportunity to choose to several years later, at least one generation, if it can survive. Not choosing stands for undergoing other people´s choice. Not informing others stands for running the risk of obtaining a result that is contrary to one´s expectations. Remaining indifferent means giving up one´s free will. It is all about your future. It is all about your evolution. It is possible that this invitation does not receive your collective assent and that, because of a lack of information, it will be disregarded. Well most of you would know I received some bad news about Jordy last week. If you haven’t read about it, you can here...
Well most of you would know I received some bad news about Jordy last week. If you haven’t read about it, you can here My Vet also suggested she could give me a referral the the Murdoch University Cancer Care unit for Animals in Perth, if I wanted to see what sort or treatment etc was available for Jordy if I wanted to go down that road as well. I couldn’t not use the referral and have Jordy get worse and put to sleep soon … and always wonder if maybe I could have done more to help. I am sooooooo glad I took him to Perth today!!! I left him there for an hour while the surgeons looked over him and they gave me three options. Leave him be to let the cancer spread to his lungs shortly and just give him a good quality of life until such time that the pain was too much and have him put to sleep (this option was the only hope the Vet had given me!!!) Scrape his tumor and do a course of Chemo to shrink and slow the growth and spread … and monitor him with subsequent checkups and then give him a few extra months before having to make the decision. Remove his eye and the surrounding tissue, check the nasal cavity and use skin from his head to patch the eye and he would almost certainly be free of the cancer (if it hasn’t spread yet) and could live another 2 years or more until he died of old age. So I am opting for number three of the above … but this is where I want to ask you all a big favour. The operation is going to cost me $3000, money I don’t have right now. The operation also needs to be done as soon as possible!!! The longer it is left, the more likely the cancer has spread and the chances of this operation working become less. What I want to ask you all (beg even) is that you support me in giving Jordy the chance to live and die in a few years of natural causes, rather than in about three months if I do nothing … buy buying my work here at Red Bubble. For every cent of Profit I make from today I will be putting in a Fund especially for Jordy’s Operation and I will start a new Journal Entry called The Jordy Fund where on request, I will paste the product bought, who bought it and how much profit (with a running total) has gone towards Jordy’s Operation. Normally I would save and plan when I needed money for something, but this is very important for me to do ASAP and so your help would be greatly appreciated. And it doesn’t matter if you just buy a card … or a Full sized Framed Print. It ALL means something to me. I appreciate your help so much and so does Jordy. These are random images she has sent us, in no particular order. We know its been over a month since this tradegy has happened in Victoria. Rachael and the others have been very very busy trying to find homes and suitable places for the surviving. As a result of my journey to Hervey Bay during August 2006, I had the pleasure to record the magnificent humpbacks as they frolicked in the calm waters of Hervey Bay. You do not have enough information to have made a proper decision and the health of the Bay and all who rely on it will suffer as a consequence. Your Media Release of 20th December relies on promotional material from the Port of Melbourne Corporation rather than facts. I believed you would protect the environment, not be swayed by “developer’s marketing”. You say you will safeguard the “Western Port Ramsar site”. You have confused Western Port and Port Phillip Bay. Western Port is a separate, unique and different ecosystem, in a completely different location. Here are some facts about Port Phillip Bay and channel deepening: - Over 100 species of sponges at The Heads occur nowhere else on earth and could be lost FOREVER if this project proceeds. Unique and beautiful sponges, corals and seagrasses would be ripped out and remaining colonies smothered. Benthic organisms responsible for maintaining the Nitrogen balance in the Bay would be smothered, increasing risks of toxic algal blooms. - Penguins, dolphins, seals, sharks, whales and thousands of marine plant and animal species interactively rely on Port Phillip Bay for habitat. This delicate balance IS under threat. - Wetlands and coastline are at greater risk from the interaction of global warming and project related sea-level rise. You have not adequately considered this. - You claim 80,000 jobs rely on the Port. This was proven wrong during the 2004 EES Panel Hearing. The 2007 SEES claims 13,748 jobs rely on the Port. There is NO evidence that ANY of these jobs are threatened. PriceWaterhouse Coopers 2007 study of the Port predicts that trade will quadruple by 2035 regardless of whether channel deepening occurs. There should be plenty MORE jobs, not less! - Industrial contaminants and toxicants trapped in Yarra silt would be released into the water and then dumped in the Bay. Heavy metals such as Cadmium, Mercury, Zinc, Lead and Arsenic and Ammonia would re-enter the food chain. PoMC did not provide adequate data on toxicant risk. Risks to HUMAN HEALTH from swimming and consuming fish from the Bay have been underestimated and you have not considered this. - Many thousands of jobs in tourism, fishing and diving and their support industries ARE threatened by this sustained assault on the health of the Bay. Recreational fishing in Port Phillip Bay contributes approximately $1 billion per annum to our economy. That’s over 10 times what the PoMC hopes channel deepening would contribute to the economy annually! PoMC admits that fish stocks will be affected for a number of years so this WILL impact on jobs in recreational and commercial fishing, diving and eco-tourism sectors. Bay related tourism provides around $1 billion benefits per annum in a growing and sustainable industry – and that’s just the Mornington Peninsula! You have just approved an outright assault on all sustainable recreational and commercial diving, fishing and Bay wide tourism. - PoMC data on future deep draught ship arrivals needs proper analysis. In approving this complex and risky project you have relied on the PoMC marketing material instead of independent research into future trends in shipping. - PoMC says channel deepening would provide approximately $1.9 billion benefits by 2035. That’s its BEST estimate and that’s ONLY around $70 million per annum! That’s similar to the annual value of JUST the Dive Industry in Port Phillip Bay. Benefits that channel deepening MIGHT provide over 27 years are substantially less than our current sustainable Bay related industries ALREADY DO provide every year! Your decision to approve channel deepening reflects very badly on the environmental and economic credentials of the Rudd government. You have committed our Bay to a huge assault from which it may never recover. I hope Blue Wedges is successful in the Federal Court and stops this project but it is outrageous that they have to do what you should be doing. Port Phillip Bay is as important to Australia’s natural history as Lake Pedder. Please do not commit our wondrous, unique and living Port Philip Bay to the same fate as Lake Pedder – lost for ever. As a distinguished environmental campaigner and now Minister elected to protect Australia’s unique environment, how could you have that on your conscience? It never ceases to amaze me how the stupidity of our far right thinking gets us. We spent more money on arresting and finding growers of marijuana and building jail after jail to house the arrest of these growers and distributors than we do on all the heroin, crack cocaine, meth labs ect all the hard drugs participants combine!! Did you know before 1930’s Hemp was forseen back then as a billion dollar industry!! BACK THEN.. billions of dollars is like now trillions..Holy Cow.. will we ever get out from under our own stupidity and become ENLIGHTENED!! The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve (SIWR) is a wetland conservation property and a tribute to Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin purchased by Terry Irwin and the federal government after Steves death. The 135,000 ha property, in Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, is home to a set of three important spring fed wetlands which provide a critical water source to threatened habitat, provide permanent flow of water to the Wenlock River, and is home to rare and vulnerable plants and wildlife. However, Cape Alumina Pty Ltd has lodged mining lease applications which include approximately 12,300 ha of the Reserve. Cape Alumina company documents indicate an intention to mine 50 plus million tons over a 10 year period commencing 2010. The greater part of this mine is on SIWR The proposed area for mining on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve contains the head waters of irreplaceable waterways and unique biodiversity which will not recover after mining operations are finished. Terri Irwin has launched a court battle against Cape Alumina to stop this outraguous claim on minerals in a reserve which houses many threatened animals and plants, but a huge tribute to a great herper and conservationist. I made this lens (which is one of several to come) because I wanted to do something that concentrated more on my faith and the way that it manifests in my art rather than just a blatant marketing blast. I know it’s such a downer to hear these things but I have to be an advocate. / The fight is over minerals – you may have seen the movie “Blood Diamond?’ . Well this is very accurate but just replace Diamonds with Coltan-the mineral used in mobile phones and some computers. Following is an email from the head of HEAL Africa I received 10 minutes ago. Then there’s a letter our American friends can copy to send to their congressman and US companies such as DELL/Apple/ Hewlett Packard. Please please please… Dear friends, Please be reassured for all of us. We have woken up safely. After a night of shooting in the town, all is quiet, and Jo and I and about half the staff are at the hospital. CNDP are outside the town, and they do not want to engage the MONUC – that would be a major diplomatic faux pas. So probably the wisest thing the Congolese army could do was to run away. The shops are mostly intact, thanks to the police patrolling the main streets. Some of the military are coming back into town. The casualties are many, especially from the populated areas, where most of the looting occurred in private houses. One family near ULPGL lost seven children. The bandits were also out in force, including the ones that come over from Gisenyi Pray for the family of Mrs Esanga and her family. They are all here in the hospital. All four children were seriously injured and the mother was tortured. They put a grenade under the mattress of the six-year old, where he was sleeping. I went into surgery while Jo and Kimona were repairing the older brother, putting his liver and intestines back. We pray he will survive. Such cruelty is incomprehensible. It has nothing to do with war; it is banditry and terrorism. Saturday, I am supposed to go to RSA with Dr Likofata and Dr Bitwe for the research training. As I am sure you are aware, conflict has resumed in northeast Democratic Republic of Congo, a conflict that is fueled by the lust for the Congo’s riches, including Coltan. Over 80% of the known reserves of coltan is found in NE DRC, but the coltan being exported is more often than not blood coltan. Much of the coltan finds its way to the US via Rwanda after it has been extracted by men, women and children terrorized by beatings, killings and rape at the hands of soldiers, rebels and militias who trade coltan for funds and weapons to further the conflict. The problem of blood coltan is so grave that the U.S. Senate recently passed the Conflict Coltan and Cassiterite Act of 2008 (SB 3058). Similar to the legislation banning importation of blood diamonds, SB 3058 will require that coltan be certified as conflict free before being imported. / / Please advise me / 1) where does your company obtain it coltan? You cannot rely upon shipping documents that indicate someplace in Europe, Asia, or even Rwanda. Most Coltan comes from the DRC. 2) What assurance do you have that your suppliers of coltan have not obtained it from the DRC? 3) Have you even asked your suppliers to reveal the original source of the coltan you have purchased? 4) What is your position on the Coltan and Cassiterite Act of 2008 (SB 3058), now pending in the House of Representatives? 5) What steps are you willing to take to assure that your coltan is conflict free? / Your web site suggests that you are a socially responsible company.
