Asteroids was a video arcade game released in 1979 by Atari Inc. It was one of the most popular and influential games of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. The objective of Asteroids was to score as many points as possible by destroying asteroids and flying saucers. The player controlled a ship that could rotate left and right, fire shots straight forward, and thrust forward. The player could also send their ship into hyperspace, causing it to disappear and reappear in a random location on the screen (with the risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of an asteroid). Each stage started with a few asteroids drifting in random directions on the screen. Objects wrapped around the screen edges. As the player shots asteroids, they broke into smaller asteroids which frequently moved faster and were more difficult to hit. Smaller asteroids also scored higher points. Periodically, a flying saucer appeared on one side of the screen and moved across to the other before disappearing again. There was a minimalist soundtrack featuring a memorable deep-toned electronic “heartbeat”, which quickened as the asteroid density was reduced by the player’s fire. Once the screen had been cleared of all asteroids and flying saucers, a new set of large asteroids appeared. The number of asteroids increased each round up to a maximum of twelve. The game was over when the player had lost all remaining lives.

The cliff face shimmered slightly as the craft slipped softly into the blue. They hugged the sheer wall until they were well clear, then dipped into the powdered soft whiteness beneath. It had been a while since their last meeting. Hopefully this one would go better… I have used this digital painting as the cover for my / 2009 Sci Fi Calendar /
She smelled like spiced apples. Her long slender fingers fluttered around her throat casting shadows of frenzied little wings on her collarbone. Her silver earrings chimed every time she moved, bells and charms. I watched her mouth as she read the leaves; she had a freckle on her upper lip that left the taste of cocoa on my tongue. It looked like a vagabond chocolate drop strayed from an afternoon delight. The tea was steaming, long slender minty vines that filled my lungs. I see, she whispered.
Nothing like heading in for a landing at a nice hotel to start one’s vacation off right.

This work is loosely based on the song BLACK COFFEE which has been sung by a number of singers Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, K.D.Laing and Julie London. Although I could’nt find who wrote the song, anybody out there know who wrote it. / A few verses from the song BLACK COFFEE. You know a man is born to love a woman / To work and slave to pay her debts / Just because he’s only human / To drown his past regrets / In coffee and cigarettes. I’m moonin’ all the mornin’ / Mournin’ all the night / In between it’s nicotine / Not much heart to fight / Black coffee … Feelin’ low as the ground / I’m waitin’ for my baby / To maybe come around. Gonna drown my past regrets / In some coffee and a few cigarettes

She was less than the sum of her parts. / She sparkled with crystalline chill. / She put on her coat of bright colors / To mask her face of ill will. Her eyes were saucers of darkness. / Her mouth was a crimson cave. / She put on her layers of beauty / And stumbled that way to her grave. I was never any good at applying makeup…it always confounded me. I’ve decided to toss it all out and let my own beauty speak for itself. Woohooooooooo!!
