  • I wish this restaurant was real. My Uncle always have told me to say this to people when I was a kid.

  • This shot has a bit of a story to it. The smoke from the fires in California isn’t expected to leave until all the fires get put out. Duh. But one is so bad CalFire is letting it burn itself out rather than risk human life in a losing situation. So, what you see here is some of that smoke against the mountains in the background. I saw that and tried a couple things to either cut thru it or neutralize it. Trying everything inside the camera didn’t work so I tried my new neutral density filter. I used a #4 because the sun was so bright on the water. That with the camera set for a slower speed I’d hoped would lighten the smoke and even out the highlights. I got these mixed results: the smoke is still visible but the full bright sunlight was reduced into this muted look that I thought was rather cool. Lower Sardine Lake is also full of mining toxins and there’s no swimming allowed in it. I guess if you fall out of the boat you have to either walk to shore or bob like a balloon until you are rescued. If I were you I’d try the bobbing thing unless you too can walk on water. :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ / SPECIAL NOTE. PLEASE READ. There have been a couple challenges to some of the statements I made above. In the first, it was pointed out by the location’s materials that the ban on swimming is due to the concerns about swimming and not exposure to toxins. While my wording above does NOT make a distinct connection between toxins and swimming, I’m going to side with site’s literature and assume it’s accurate. In the second concern however, it was stated that there are no known toxins in Lower Sardine Lake. It was also stated by the same source that there were was an issue with toxins in the past. To that I’d say two things: first, Lower Sardine is not separated from a toxic pond a few hundred yards away. There is an open channel between both bodies of water. To assume there is no toxin in the water in BOTH places is to assume toxins can’t travel in water or anything moving in that water. The second thing I would say is that the toxins of the past are the toxins of the present and the future. Sacramento is still experiencing mercury in the fish from mining operations of the 1850’s. To assume that Lower Sardine had a problem in the past that is no longer an issue now is to ignore the reality that some toxins do not break down and disappear on their own. And until I see a study that states Lower Sardine was “cleaned” of toxins like mercury – a study of mind-shattering importance because we certainly need that technology in Sacramento and the central Pacific coastline – I’m going to stand by my opinion that the toxins that were admittedly in Lower Sardine Lake are still an issue in Lower Sardine Lake today.
