Looking out over the Santorini caldera from near Akrotiri. Fira (the capitol) is on top of the hill just off centre right and Oia can be seen at the far end of the island on the left. Santorini, Greece, is one of the southern most islands of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea. Related shots can be found at Santorini or Greece or Eastern Meditteranean. THIS WAS TAKEN IN ONE OF THE MOST CHARMING TOWNS I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF EXPERIENCING. IT IS CALLED OIA IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE GREEK ISLAND CALLED SANTORINI. THE TOWN LITERALLY CASCADES DOWN TEH HILL.THE SUNSETS THERE ARE WORLD REKNOWNED AND I TOOK THIS ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER THE SUN HAD SET USING A 3 SECOND SLOW EXPOSURE ON A TRIPOD ATOP A CLIFF EDGE THAT I HAD TO RISK LIFE AND LIMB TO GET TO SO I COULD GET THE ANGLE I WANTED. TAKEN WITH A FUJI FILM S9600 *WINNER OF ‘DESTINATIONS’ CONTEST IN 100% GROUP!!

This photo is Featured in The Mysterious Balkans Folks.. nearly 2 years ago.. my first Cruise on the med.. climbing all the way up the steep side of Santorini.. and than this breathtaking view down..The white ship on left is ’ my ’ Cruiser .. the Norwegian Jewel from the NCL.com line. Folks ..Santorini again.. / This time ‘evidence’ for 2 RB members ( and friends ) Jacquei and John Vriesekolk :-) ( BIG SMILES) / My previous photo was also about Santorini and first Jacquei commented .. to be folowed by and John Vriesekolk on the hight of this Island and the shape I am/was in.. Did I survive such a high climb … Well here is 1] Jacquei ’s reaction : / Jacquei / I get vertigo just looking at this….what a lovely view…..I love the little homes in the foreground….I think you must have climbed a few steps to reach this point !!.............j:) / To be followed by by the reaction of John : / John Vriesekolk: / Wow , John this is a great picture of a wonderful area. I had a short romantic relation ship while on Santorini! She had such lovely and strong legs.. her eye’s oh Lawdy there where so gorgeous.. deep dark brown.. framed with long eyelashes.. and her skin so soft.. she ALL the way carried me.. plus my photo bag all the way to the top .. / Oh did I mentioned it was a large Donkey-Mule? / Thanks for the feedback .. / John Riding a Mule / Jack ass (US) is 94 % the same as .. lets say a smaller horse / New Forrest Pony.. / When U are used to it .. you know how to sterr/navigate :-) with your legs/knee’s / This baby and I went up just by ourselves ..I let her do it her speed( warm day) and in each corner / bend .. she stopped a few .. giving me time to click a few.. The caldera is a dormant volcano. This view is in the town of Oia. Many archeologists believe that the lost continent of Atlantis lies submerged here. This image was used as a book cover on a book series entitled Travelers’ Tales.” It graced the cover of “Travelers Tales:Greece.” The houses of Oia are built into the sides of the island’s northwest cliff, thereby maintaining a cool temperature in the summer. This was photographed with a Nikon F3 using elite ektachrome, 100 asa, 1/250sec @ f/11 in Sept of 1997 at around 3:30 – 4 pm.
