  • Its outstanding feature is the chapel of the Marrajo Brotherhood, built in 1695. It houses the Baroque altar piece made of wood, and numerous figures paraded during Easter week, some of which made by Salzillo. Unfortunately I have no details of the side chapel pictured, the tourist details were as scant as above! Found this additional information:- This tiny baroque gem, the chapel of the marrajos, is to be / found in what is now the military church of Santo Domingo, / in calle Mayor. The original chapel of the brotherhood was / built in 1642 in what used to be the church of the former / Dominican convent of San Isidoro. In 1732 the chapel was / extended to include the present altarpiece. / The chapel is square-shaped and topped with a graceful / dome which is profusely decorated with emblems of the / Passion. All of the theatrical techniques of the Baroque are / deployed here, with natural light being used to create the / impression that the dome is actually rising into the air and / also to highlight the gold of the altarpiece. / The altarpiece is a summary of the essential content of the / Good Friday processions: in a lady chapel in the large central / hexedra stands the image of Jesus of Nazareth himself, / a remarkable sculpture by José Capuz, and in niches on / either side the rest of the images which appear in the Via / Crucis. The story of the Passion is completed in the upper part / of the chapel, with paintings between the rocailles depicting / the Crucifixion, Calvary and the Descent from the Cross. / The Chapel of Our Lord Jesus of Nazareth Unfortunately this photo had to be taken through smallish iron bars so couldn’t quite get it all in! • Artist’s Comments / This is what I meant, by what I asked you about doing something odd, using some of your designs for fill. I used two of them in this painting, plus another one that I already had. / (I said to Santo Sam)

  • Founded 1611, it was a blast going back for the first time since I graduated eons of years ago. I took me almost a whole day walking around the campus and photographing the old and new buildings, places where I have fond memories of. In 2011 the University will celebrate its 400 year anniversary. This unviversity was the only CO-ED Catholic univerisity many years after I graduated. Proud to say that yes, women go to school way back then.

  • In the No.1 hold on the wreck at a depth of 100ft/30m, you can still see several Willeys jeeps. These were originally packed for transport in wooden crates, which have long since rotted, and packed in such a way that the wheels were removed and placed on the back seat. The windscreen was on top of the wheels, and the steering wheel packed in one of the wheel rims. They were stacked on top of each other, but as the ship now lies on her side they are on their rear ends. Just one of the many relics to be found on the President Coolidge, Santo Vanuatu. / I am planning a trip for early this year, if any one is interested drop me a bubblemail, and I will keep you informed. • This most amazing five-star hotel has risen up from the ruins of an old convent in Antigua, Guatemala. As we walked through its dramatic grounds visiting one evening, the ancient stone pillars, walls, and fountains gave us an almost other-worldly feeling. We were already rather awestruck when, as if on cue, a distant volcano erupted spectacularly, spewing red hot lava in a narrow stream down its side. Candles burned everywhere, and tiny white lights trailed beautifully through many of the trees on the grounds. It was just before Christmas, and hundreds of red and white poinsettias gracefully adorned walkways and corners. A beautiful, even magnificent place, set in amidst the considerable poverty of the majority of the populace. Since we had been working up in the mountains with people of extreme poverty, it was an experience of mixed emotion for us – appreciating the beauty and grandeur of the hotel on one hand, but still experiencing the heart-wrenching scenes that poverty forces upon those bound by it.

  • This is a photo I took while on a trip to Santo Domingo, DR a couple of years ago. I took it with a Minolta digital P&S, but I think it came out pretty well. Santo Domingo is one of the oldest colonies of the Spanish conquistadores and houses among other relics the bones of Christopher Columbus, the oldest stone church in the Americas and the world’s largest lighthouse. Funny I should bring back a photo of a gargoyle … I guess everyone has their priorities :)
