Taken in 2004 in the beautiful farming community of Westcliffe, Colorado, at the foot of the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. This splendid restored old barn sat on a 160-acre ranch owned by our Georgia neighbors, the Irwins. Westcliffe sits adjacent to the historic mining town of Silver Cliff and both are at approximately 8000 feet in elevation. The sister towns are surrounded by more than one mountain range. To the west are the Sangre de Cristos at 14,000 feet in height. The Wet Mountains, Collegiate Mountains, and Spanish Peaks are respectively east, north, and south. The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising about 750 feet (230 m) from the floor of the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range, covering about 19,000 acres (77 km²). They are perhaps 12,000 years old. The dunes were formed from sand deposits of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, flowing through the San Luis Valley. Over the ages, westerly winds picked up sand particles from the river flood plain. As the wind lost power before crossing the Sangre de Cristo Range, the sand was deposited on the east edge of the valley. This process continues, and the dunes are slowly growing. The wind changes the shape of the dunes daily. There are several streams flowing on the perimeter of the dunes. The streams erode the edge of the dune field, and sand is carried downstream. The water disappears into the ground, depositing sand on the surface. Winds pick up the deposits of sand, and blow them up onto the dune field once again. Digging a few inches into the dunes even at their peaks reveals wet sand. If the streams were to dry up, the dunes would disappear; in fact part of the motivation of turning the Monument into a National Park was the extra protection of the water, which Colorado’s cities and agriculture covet. -Wikipedia

On the eastern side of the remote, high-mountain San Luis Valley, between the Blanca Massif and Crestone Needle, are the Great Sand Dunes, the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes cover approximately 39 square miles and rise to almost 750’ above the valley floor. Once again, a fantastic sunset near Great Sand Dunes National Park..but this time done with HDR treatment. This HAS to be viewed larger for the details!

I was definitely at the right place at the right time. The Sangre de Christo mountain range is one of my favorite mountain ranges in the whole world, and this photo serves as evidence.

We took a drive today to Westcliffe, a beautiful little mountain town about an hour from Pueblo. This was taken 3/17/09 near the top of Phantom Canyon Drive, approaching Victor, Colorado. Even with the aspens bare and the grass brown, the beauty of the Colorado Landscape is breath taking.
