... voila freshwater ice … / that has been broken off a glacier or an ice sheet or shelf. Icebergs float in the water because they are less dense than the water they are immersed in. Only 1/5th of their mass is visible above water and they come in various sizes, the largest iceberg sighted was approximately the same size as Belgium! www.mnh.si.edu/arctic/html/resources_glossary.html

  • This is a capture of the beautiful Blue Waxbill and the Violet-eared Waxbill that are standing out on this shot. / I shot this at an old water-crip, I noticed so much energy and joy here, even the bees are all over and enjoying natures wonderful gifts and it reminded me of Van Dykes little poem. Hope you enjoy this lovely image of mother nature’s gift to us

  • This picture was taken in the late afternoon as four birds rode the air currents over the sea. The title comes from a quote by Virginia Woolf.

  • Song Thrushes have a very clear and musical song with great variety and mimicry, most phrases being repeated several times. The song is often delivered from a conspicuous perch. Breeding territories are established in the late winter or early spring. The breeding season lasts from March to August. The mud-lined cupped nest is built low down in any suitable cover, including trees and shrubs, among creepers on walls, ledges, and even on the ground amongst thick vegetation. They lay between three to five pale-blue eggs with black spots.

  • The Poy Sang Long festival is the most colourful event for the Shan people of Nothern Thailand and Burma. Young boys, colourfully dressed as princes, as was the man who became the Buddha, are paraded around the village and environs before they are initiated as novices in the temple, where they will stay for several days or months. Carried by their proud relatives who also carry special umbrellas for shade, the boys feet cannot touch the ground until they become novice monks. This particular festival took place in the late 1980’s in Ban Tham Lod in Mae Hong Son province, Thailand, the village where I live. The local Shan decided to carry the boys through the massive Lod cave in the Nam Pai Wildlife Sanctuary, placing them on bamboo rafts while others pushed the crafts through chest-deep water. At the cave entrance and exit they beat drums and gongs and danced with the the boys on their shoulders. The acoustics in the cave are superb, and with the contrast between the bright costumes and the gloomy cave, the scene was spellbinding. This photo was taken with a Nikon FM2, 28mm Nikkor lense and kodachrome slide film. The original slide was relatively dirty, so after scanning I cleaned it with ACDSee pro tools, as well as I could, and made a few minor adjustments with levels and colour.
