This is not your “usual” shot of the S.F. city skyline and Bay Bridge that you are used to seeing… those are shot from overhead. There are reasons this view is not seen all over the place… To get to this location, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Sheer drops with nothing but rocks and ocean below abound, jagged metal from construction jut up from the ground when you least expect, and the keep out signs from the government didn’t help to settle my nerves any either. For that last reason you don’t want to use your flashlight as you head down the slopes for fear of the coast guard seeing you. That makes the afore mentioned problems magnified. So… all that said, it was a calm beautiful night on the bay and once I reached this area, I found this sight so breathtaking that it took me easily five minutes before I remembered why I came to the spot. SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW LARGE San Francisco January 20th 2009.. Civic Center.. Outside Big Screens.. / Political Officials and Each Other! this is an overall view.. When it came up on my large screen I was amazed at the diversity of this crowd.. WE THE PEOPLE !!! I was squashed in a corner but squashed in Love and friendship.. I could not move too far to get too many shots while he was sworn in.. I should have bought a box to stand on and I am 5’9!! But I got a few good shots and was with fellow Americans who cheered and booed.. (when guess whos appreared.. B and C !!) and was full of the Spirit of our country … The United States of America with emphasis on the United part!! Enjoy friends…. and you were all with me.. I saw everyone’s comments on my Iphone!!! / You sure are a wonderful family! A view of Alcatraz from the San Francisco Harbor. Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986. / Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. / During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed no prisoners as having ever successfully escaped. 36 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, two men trying twice; seven were shot and killed, and two drowned. The most violent occurred on 2 May 1946 when a failed escape attempt by six prisoners led to the so-called “Battle of Alcatraz”. Nikon D90
