The sandstone cliff walls at Starved Rock state park in utica Illinois. Since the cliffs are mostly sandstone it is apparently easy to carve writing in the rocks there. There is sand all over the trails from run-off from the rocks, and a huge pile of sand at the bottom of this particular cliff on the St Louis canyon trail. It’s a bit of a misnomer, swamp. It is actually a lake created by a dam for the water supply of a nearby cement works. It’s actually hardly ever used for its original purpose and has been turned into a recreational area. Because the upper vegetation has disappeared from near the shore it has allowed a plethora of wattle to appear.

“Garden of the Gods” Is a real park; it is a Registered National Natural Landmark in Colorado Springs, CO. It is a beautiful area of sandstone formations and has many hiking trails throughout the park.

Curved windows are unusual, and I liked their partnering curve in the sandstone blocks of this building. Teamwork! / The architectural mouldings at different levels add to this building’s interest for me. With the sun rising behind the building, these windows have not yet seen the direct light of day.. but they patiently wait.. Near Harbour Place and High Street, Burntisland, Fife. / A mid-October morning, 2009.
