The ship is the Diamond, a ketch, unloading coal on to carts, while the tide is out at Sandsend on the North sea coast, near Whitby. A small watercolour painting, on heavy 200lb Hannemuhle paper / Size 7”x8”

3 miles north of the English seaside town, Whitby, is the small village of Sandsend. The beach is littered with these weathered groynes. If you catch them at the right time you can have great fun with a long expsoure and receeding tide.

this is andsend, on the coast route to whitby, in the north york moors national park. seen with a 5.5 metre spring tide, pushed by a very strong on shore gale. we get a few days like this several times a year. often the road has to be closed. you can just see itin the gap between the waves. whitby west cliff can be seen in the left background!

Took a trip to Grosmont ,on the North Yorkshire Moors today in preparation for our attendance with the Vintage Car and Caravan at the Wartime Weekend event there next week – well recommended for a visit by the way! x Stopped off at Sandsend on the way home to give the little dog a run on the beach – this was the view towards Whitby with view of the Abbey across the beach – boy was it wild and windy – but a fabulous place to be!!! /

by Paul TupmanSandsend, Northeast Yorkshire, UK / January, 2009 In many parts of the world local folk lore (and perhaps more of an old wives tale than actual scientific fact) states that every seventh coastal wave will be larger than any that precedes it. This disproportionately large seventh wave also goes by the popular name of the “Sneaker Wave” Well, as I crouched low with my gear waiting for the next shot, I certainly didn’t notice the size of this wave as it snuck up on me, engulfing my tripod and nearly the camera had I not acted quickly and saved myself from a hefty repair bill! The next frame in the sequence was a classic… taking one for the Team! If only it had been in focus! Oh and I’ve only just about gotten all of the sand out of my tripod now… well, nearly!
