Up at 4.30 to catch the dawn over the sand dunes of Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park. The haze in the sky created a beautiful sense of depth to the rolling layers of dunes and mountains beyond. I wasn’t sure this shot was going to turn out- although not straight into the sun, the scattered light in the haze has burnt the sky out, but the side-light kept the contrast in the dunes to give some nice form and dimension to the foreground. Hope you enjoy. May 2007.

  • Getting to know the stars is an important part of landscape photography. Using a compass and G.P.S I was able to pinpoint the South Celestial Star. Because of the rotation of the earth, using a six hour exposure gives the feeling of the stars trailing around this point. I used a 5 million candle power flashlight to illuminate the sand dune. Because of the massive size of the dune I had to climb an adjacent dune and paint the light on from there. Camera – Fuji Gx617 / Film – Fuji Velvia

  • Taken at the Great Sand Dunes National park in south westrn Colorado. USA / / September, 2007

  • overnight rains add texture to this sand dune in outback NSW. more of my outback Australian photography can be seen at / the Aussie outback

  • The sand dunes at Mesquite Flats, close to Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. From the highway it doesn’t look like much, but once you get in amongst the dunes, the photographic opportunities are endless. I loved how the windswept ripples leant this photo a sense of depth and movement- definitely one of my favourite from the shoot. I got lucky with the early light- at 6am the sunrise cast the ripples in perfect contrast and getting nice-looking pics was as easy as shooting dolphins in a barrel. May 2007.

  • Mesquite Dunes
    by Tristan Clements

    US$4.28–US$114.00

The dunes just outside Stovepipe Wells on the Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park. This shot was taken around 6am, trying to make the most of high-contrast early-morning light. In the event, a haze close to the horizon kept the scene from being heavily contrasty, but instead the diffuse dawnlight gives the dunes a softly textured feel, almost like silk, while the way the clouds lined up with the dunes was just perfect for the angle I was shooting from and brought this together nicely. This is a spot I want to return to… May 2007.

  • Tarkine sands
    by Michael Walters

    US$3.42–US$91.20

  • The weather on this day had been so miserable – so much so that I nearly didn’t catch this sunset (because I didn’t think we’d see the sunset!) But , the clouds cleared a little, the sun peeked through and then there were all these different blues. I’m so glad I went out it was a moody, wonderful sunset! /

    by Garry S

    US$5.70–US$152.00

Up on the sand dunes there is always something of interest, be it close-ups, foot prints or fantastic shadows created in time by the winds coming from the sea.

  • The Desert
    by Tristan Clements

    US$4.28–US$114.00

The dunes just outside Stovepipe Wells on the Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park. This shot was taken around 6am, trying to make the most of high-contrast early-morning light. In the event, a haze close to the horizon kept the scene from being heavily contrasty. With the vertical crop I really wanted to emphasize the clouds- at first they dissapointed me, but when I saw how they stood out with the polarizer, I found they made an integral part of the composition, and are a nice textural counterpart to the sand and the ripples. The splashes of sunlight on the face of the big dune really brought out the shape and form of the sand too. May 2007.

  • Tarkine Dunes
    by Michael Walters

    US$3.42–US$91.20

I spent 8 days in the Tarkine forest and coast with a small group of photographers. The most amazing place in Tasmania. The aborigional history is also amazing where their tools still can be found all over the place. If you ever get a chance to go there call a tour guide called Tarkine Trails.

  • This shot was taken Sept. 2007 on a cross country road trip. / The Great Sand Dunes are in the south western part of Colorado. A very beautiful area to photograph.

Heyya, this is becoming increasingly popular, as one of my best pieces of work. SO! I should write a better bio for it. Here goes: / I used to live in the middle east, near to Dubai, which I am sure you have heard of. This is a beautiful sunset that I got to photography just outside my house, where the sanddunes meet the persian gulf. This was soon after I baught my first DSLR, the Canon EOS 40D, days after it came out, so I was unfamilure with the settings and stuff. However, I flicked it over to Manual and shot away, this being the CLEAR shot to use. I must stress that there is MINIMAL editing in this picture, the contrast and color are the ORIGONAL. All that was done was a minor crop for compisition. And this picture was born. So, being one of my more popular pictures, I ask the few who read this bio for some constructive critisim. Also, Fav it and all that jazz Thank you very much for reading. I hope you enjoy my image / This image file is copyright to Daft Photography, also known as DJColdfire. I do NOT give permission for editing, If you’re going to feature this, please let me know.
