It’s always good to have a BIG BRUDDA around to sort inconvenient moments out! – / hahahahaha!
We men like to think of ourselves as pretty cool. like the earth revolves on an axis of us! – not likely! – hehe! But as i look into the communities every where, i see women more so then men, being the ties that bind families, communities. That indwelt spirit of solidarity and preservation for those abouts them, the resolve to sacrifice if need be in order for those around them to not go without! This is not a diss on men, we simply need to grow up, stop being selfish and step to the plate of life, then women wouldn’t be burdened with our short comings! Wahine – Hawaiian and Maori word for women or female, immovable Wahine! Immovable Wahines!
A sunset behind the towered buildings of a city casts but shadows and variants of grey and whilst there is life every where, varied textures of greens are to found in the setting sun of the islands, it lifts the smell of flowers and the sound of a breeze though the trees! :)
The Marquesas or traditionally called “Te Fenua ‘Enata” or “Te Henua Kenana” respectfully, meaning “The land of men”. The Marquesas Islands are the island group farthest from any continent in the world, lying between 400 and 600 miles (600 and 1,000 km) south of the equator and approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) northeast of Tahiti. (Wikipedia) A island that still holds many mysteries within its landscape!
Not many of Rarotonga’s Tiki’s, such as these have survived into the 20th and 21st Centuries. Housed behind glass and in dark corners with in the recesses of a museum collections do they now stand! My Collage displays it within a context of colour and movement not an object of web and dust collecting.
Polynesian patterns from within nature take shape and express the growth and renewal!

I have traveled to Samoa a few times now, the first time I caught a ferry from Upolu island to Savaii island, which was when i noticed a few other smaller islands doting the sea scape, they being Manono and Apolima. Manono in particular captured my imagination, whilst being larger then Apolima, is an island so small that it has no roads and so no cars, no restaurants, a few small shops selling basic things and with it the welcome of its local inhabitants. Traditional va’a’s (canoes) are used daily by the men to spear fish swimming through the reefs. No dogs are allowed on the island and so as you could imagine it is a peaceful and serene place, where every attempt to retain it’s natural environment is being taken. Manono is only 20mins or so by ferry from Upolu and presents the visitor with a casual walk of a few hours to circle the entire island, there is much more to Manono, but i think you will have to find that out for your selves!

Aaaaah, a relaxing morning is all one wants, but more could be afforded if your view was such, across the turquoise blues and greens of a Tahitian shore, it would truly be selfish to ask for more. What else could you want then Coffee, fruit, flowers and food ?
I tend to work a lot in silhouette when I’m doing landscapes – I like the ‘atmosphere’ to be the thing that draws the eye in. My whanau and I recently spent a couple of glorious weeks in Samoa and this is one of the works that resulted. Dusk is my favourite time of the day (I’m sure dawn would be too, but it’s just too damned early) – as the heat goes out of the day and the light gets more intense the birds and animals begin their final song before resting for the night. We will be going back to Samoa, that’s for sure. Landscape and trees from digital photo, the sky and clouds are all mine and created in Photoshop.
Light, Humidity, Rain, Life.
Every child I passed on the roads of Samoa, straight after school had the biggest grin on their faces, they slowly would make their way home along the gravel and dirt street or leisurely along the beach, unless they were running in a group to get the best vantage point to jump into the local rock pool! Aaah Samoana days! :)
The Lone Fisherman From Fiti. Fiti being the ancient name for modern day Fiji. This Fisherman is on his Va’a ( outrigger) chasing a dashing fish, riding the slow heaving surf, he calmly chases his prey.
A perfect tropical suntset in Western samoa
Palm Frond : Photo taken in Samoa, upon the island of Upolu.
we stayed here, a tropical oasis, every thing on tap, good friends, plenty of alcohol and buckets of culture at our doorstep.
Night falls and men dance, twirl battons of flame and beat up their drums. The rhythm is fantastic, intoxicating, night after night, it was electic hypnotic fantastic dont stop it!
Samoa Apia, this is how the other live.
” ‘O Savai’i ‘o le motu moni o le ōlaga faigatā o Sāmoa.” The island of Savaii is a relatively unspoilt and beautiful place, clean and inviting. This photo is of a beach fale’ ( samoan hut/house ) upon a beach on the north coast of Savaii, the largest of the Samoan islands. If you ever go there, don’t go looking for the hotels in the islands with their conveniences, go to the villages, met the people support the local economies and stay in their Fale’s, to know a place, you must meet and know its people. I can’t wait to i go back!
this waterfall is the island of Upolu in Samoa…only a snapshot of the rainforest surrounding this one of many inaccesible wonders of nature… see my other samoan work, also available for sale as a card… samoa
