  • Original is Acrylic painting on Canvas. for all hallows eve… The carved pumpkin, lit by a candle inside, is one of Halloween’s most prominent symbols. / These lanterns are usually carved from a turnip or swede (or more uncommonly a mangelwurzel). / The jack-o’-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. / He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. / In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night. This story has been passed down through generations of Irish families. / The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America, where pumpkins were readily available and much larger, making them easier to carve than turnips. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their home’s doorstep after dark. In America the tradition of carving pumpkins is known to have preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration. / The tradition of carving vegetable lanterns may have been brought over by the Scottish or English—documentation is unavailable to establish when or by whom. The carved pumpkin was originally associated with harvest time in general in America and did not become specifically associated with Halloween until the mid-to-late 19th century. / -From Wikipedia / Halloween like jack O’ Lanterns but less cheeky? / check out Jacks Hallowe’en fire / also available on tshirts/tops / thankyou for taking the time to view my art and (hopefully) comment… / please have a look at my other artwork… / hope you enjoy! :) Click on any category above for that genre… or / Click here to go back to my profile page ... thanx :)

  • Its the night when the vail between this world and the next touch, it is a time for reflection and feasting. Pan is let loose and dances among the trees the rich coloured leaves fall as if joining him in the dance. whilst others take on the guise of animals and spirits of the night there candels guiding the souls of the dead. Autumn chill tells of winters cold yet to come and magic is at its strongest. So light the fire that burns away the worrys of the past year, and imbrace the world a new as the year turns once more

  • This was created for Judi Taylor – she made a special request for piece for Samhain which is November 1st. You can learn about this Celtic/pagan holiday here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain Judi, I hope you (and everyone else!) like it. Blessings to you! This was created by digitally manipulating elements of one of my pastel paintings, which I wasn’t really happy with. Now I think I am! Thanks for the request Judi, it really stimulated the creative juices tonight!

  • October is a month of mixed emotions…fall is so beautiful…the air crisp and clean…the skies bluer than blue…there is no other sound like that of the crunch of leaves underfoot as you go for a Sunday walk…but there is a feeling of regret that the joys of summer are gone…the warmth of the sun will now be gone for months…but for the children Hallowe’en brings it’s promise of sweet things…for us in Canada, thanksgiving is just around the corner…the painting seeks to incorporate all that is October in one radical hit…the colours, the sadness, the promise, the celebrations... • This was fun to do. I painted a large chunk of the cat, mixture of photomanipulation and digital painting. / All artwork is copyrighted Kerri Ann Crau and can not be used in any way, shape or form without written permission from photographer. This means in layouts, tags, manipulation etc. I do take it as a compliment but I do not want it done. Thank you. I do however love feedback and comments! / Stock: / My own and http://phantasmastock.deviantart.com/

  • Changed the title to “Samhain”. The term “Samhain” derives from the name of a month in the ancient Celtic calendar, in particular the first three nights of this month, with the festival marking the end of the summer season and the end of the harvest. The Gaelic festival became associated with the Catholic All Souls’ Day, and appears to have influenced the secular customs now connected with Halloween. It is also the Gaelic word for the month of “November”. stock credits / model / http://froweminahildstock.deviantart.com/art/Medieval-Forest-Stock-004-140359100 background / http://ashensorrow.deviantart.com/art/Premade-Background-170-139338303

  • On Hallows Eve….the veil is very thin between the worlds….Samhain is a time of communication between the past and the present…. This work is a combination of an image I took of one of my Native American sculptures and an Encaustic work. I layered the images together.

  • Halloween, Samhain, All Hallows Eve, Shadowfest, Ancestor Night. Samhain (SOW-in or SAV-ayn) marked the beginning of the old Celtic new year, and many Celtic Pagans still observe Samhain as the renewal of the Wheel of the Year. This was the night that the old God died, returning to the Land of the Dead to await rebirth at Yule, and a time when the Crone Goddess would go into mourning for her lost son/consort, leaving her people in temporary darkness. As in days long past, Celtic Pagans believe that the veil between the world of the living and that of the dead is at its thinnest on this night, and that the spirits of our departed loved ones walk the earth, visit family and friends, and join in the ritual celebrations. This makes Samhain a prime night for any type of spirit contact rituals. The feeding of the dead is a widespread practice, even in modern Celtic lands. In Brittany and Ireland food is always left out for these spirit travelers, and candles are placed in windows to guide them along their way, and these were the origins of the modern Halloween customs of the jack o’lantern and trick-or-treat. A little mood music for you tonight. I created this kaliedoscope from a poor photograph of an almost full moon peeking through the clouds. I never discard my photographs, even when they don’t work as that! Blessed Be my friends. :o) XO / Jenny
