don’t cry a tear, for me / For the ocean is where I roam
This is actually a song I wrote late one night for my Dad who is a retired fisherman. I wrote the lyrics, my Fiance wrote the music and we recorded it within a few hours. It was great fun and something I would love to do again someday soon. This is the first, and only, song I have ever written but hopefully not the last!
A shot of the boats docked at the Sambro, Nova Scotia Government wharf
This picture was taken on March 8, 2008; a very rainy foggy day in Sambro, NS. This was fitting weather for a small fishing community remembering their five friends, neighbours and family members lost at sea 20 years ago. On March 8th, 1988 the fishing boat “Bonnie Lou II” was lost at sea and the five fisherman on board were never found. Had the men survived the storm the sight of this lighthouse, which stands at the entrance to Sambro, would have welcomed them home.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Sambro Island Lighthouse. Families, including cousins of mine used to live on the island all year round. There were two homes which are still standing, but barely. I believe the building you are seeing in this shot is where the families kept their supplies and storage. The island is said to be haunted by a man. I was quite disappointed to not have felt or seen something eerie while I was there. There is also a spot which looks to be carved out of the rocks on the island called the “Devil’s Footprints” The story goes that the devil walks up out of the water and walks up the rocks to the island. What the devil would want with a lighthouse I have no idea, but that is what I was told. The rock pattern is very odd though and quite something to see. The lighthouse is now run by solar panels and no human hands are needed. Even the fog horn is run by a machine that detects fog. Even though I did not see or feel a ghost, the island has a very lonely feel to it, an abandoned and sad spot. I couldn’t imagine being there alone….no, I just could not!

The beach was very busy today.

2008 was the 250th anniversary of the Sambro Island Lighthouse. Families, including cousins of the family, used to live on the island all year round. There were two homes, one of which is barely still standing and the other recently burned down. The lighthouse just offshore from the fishing village of Sambro, Nova Scotia, provides a guide into the harbour for the fishermen of the village coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. Though this was a beautiful day, fog often is a menace along these shores. Photo taken from Crystal Crescent Beach, early September, 2008. Fuji S100FS camera.
An image of a condemned house on Sambro Island off the coast of the Atlantic Canadian province of Nova Scotia, Canada. This island is about a half hour boat ride from the mainland. Many years ago the light house keeper and his family would have lived in this house in total isolation. Abandoned By The Sea is available in all print formats offered by Red Bubble.
So serene and so calm are the waters…. This shot was taken in Sambro, Nova Scotia, Canada.
This year, 2009, marks the 251st birthday of Sambro Lighthouse in Sambro, NS Canada. This lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in North America. My Husband and I went on a tour of Sambro Island on the 250th anniversary. The atmosphere on the island is quite something, there is a certain feeling in the air that is hard to describe… When I captured this shot we were actually on a boat steaming away from the island. It always pays to look back one more time!
