This painting represents the transformation of the goddess Boann into the River Boyne. Boann’s husband was Nechtan, who was keeper of the sacred well Segais (the Well of Wisdom). Around the well grew nine magical hazel trees, from which grew magical crimson hazelnuts. The nuts fell into the well feeding the five colorful salmon that lived inside the well. Each salmon represented wisdom obtained through the five senses and had distinctive crimson spots on their bellies from eating the hazelnuts. All, but Nectan and his assistants, were forbidden to approach the well. This restriction irked Boann, and she decided one day to approach the well. To spite her husband, whom she believed greedily coveted the well, Boann approached the well counter clockwise. But what she didn’t know is that the well itself had specific conditions in which one could gaze into it. One must approach clockwise three times before looking straight and steadily into the well or one’s eyes would burst from the power of the wisdom contained within. Boann peered cautiously into the well, which caused the water to rise angrily and it took one of her eyes. Because she approached the well counter clockwise, she had further angered the waters and so the well erupted with a torrent. Boann fled from the rushing waters losing an arm and a leg before the angry waters reached the sea, leaving behind a 70 mile long river, now called the Boyne River. Having lost one eye, one arm, and one leg, Boann was transformed. She existed from that point on somewhere half in and half out of the physical world. She became the soul of the river, but also something much more powerful. For when she released the waters of Segais, she freed the salmon of knowledge into the world. Now humans had access to the wisdom reserved only for the gods. Anyone who ate the flesh of the salmon, instantly possessed the knowledge they contained. Boann then became the patron goddess of poetic and spiritual inspiration. Her influence bridges the gap in the wisdom of mind to allow the feminine nature in each of us to stream into our being. Her sacrifice represents the transformation of the self that is required for wisdom to enter. Her essence is present in all rivers. To call upon her, one must simply invoke her name while sitting next to a river and listen with a clear mind and an open soul. Her gift of wisdom will transform you. Netted Rhodotus. Only one member of this species/family of mushroom….found mainly in the state I live in. Only found in the United States that I know of. / This mushroom is extremely unique in that it must go thru a ‘dry’ spell then a nice wet spell in order for the cap to achieve it’s distinct pattern of webbed texture. When I first found these I could not find in any identification book as most photos showed it either before the ‘webbing’ stage or after they’d started to rot. / THE favorite mushroom of mine to see and photograph.
Not quite what it seems.. I sat by the waterfall for an hour trying to get good shots of the salmon leaping the falls, yet failed to catch a shot with multiple salmon. I achieved this image by using three shots and a bit of photo editing magic. Taken at Stainforth Force, Ribblesdale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. MY WATERFALLS SET

Here on the lovely river tweed near Selkirk in scottish borders the salmon are swimming hard against the flow to return to their spawning grounds upstream without stopping for a bite to eat and have a tough job trying to leap up some of the many obstacles in their way… I caught this slippery customer at a salmon ladder outside selkirk in the scottish borders but already the light was against me…. the spray on the lens from the falls didn’t help much either… Taken from this side of the river he was was leaping near the opposite bank in the very top left hand corner of this : / Settings at full zoom on a compact Olympus SP560 UZ were shutter priority ..f4.5, 1/500sec, ISO 80… / Any comments, tips or suggestions most welcome ;) What I really should have done was drive at least a 10mile detour to find a bridge , cross the river and grab a machete to cut my way through to a better spot on the opposite bank where the lighting at least would have been better… Of course when i see the amazing works by the skilfully talented dsargent / like this and this I wish I could do it over … / But at least I caught something – and you should have seen the ones that got away…............ teeheehehee …....... / :))

I shot this earlier this morning 10/18/08 on the Jones Valley arm of Shasta Lake about16 miles North East of Redding, CA . The lake is an alarming wake up call to conserve water as the bank you are seeing in this image is usually under water. We have had and are still in a drought here in Northern CA; the lake level was down 150 plus feet from the crest last time I caught the news…..a few days ago. Many fishermen lost their set-ups on these trees while they were still under water…....we drove for several miles beyond where the normal boat ramp would be…..fishermen are putting boats in the lake using a dirt boat ramp now…......the third boat ramp since the drought began. Shasta Lake is well known around the world for it’s recreation uses including boating, camping, and fishing. Some of the species more dominant are Bass, Crappie and Trout. / / ____ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. This very large male Kodiak bear was estiamted by our guide to be over 1000 pounds (455kg). He is on his way down stream to the tidal flats of Uyak Bay to join the feasting on the early pink salmon run. This bear will increase his weight by a third in the coming weeks as he gorges on fat salmon fresh from the sea. By the time he is ready to hibernate his belly will be swinging low between his legs and he may weigh close to 1400 pounds (636kg). Uyak Bay, Kodiak, Alaska Aug. 2008
