  • This year Salisbury will be celebrating the 750th anniversary of the consecration of the completed Cathedral in 1258. / The spire is 404 feet tall, the highest in Europe… no words of mine can add anything to its beauty! Although I was born in Salisbury, so might be biased, I am sure noone would disagree with the magnificence of this marvellous building. / Captured at 17mm, 30 second exposure, f9, ISO 100 Sold as a mounted print – many thanks to the unknown buyer /

  • Crane Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire / / Bridges were crucial to Salisbury’s success as a medieval trading centre. It was important to have safe, dry river crossings for people coming in to the market from places round about. Crane Bridge was built in the 15th Century. Although it has been widened twice since then, the arches were reused, so it has kept its character. Crane Bridge and Crane Street were named after a house called the Crane.

  • Salisbury Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral located in Salisbury, England. The main body was completed in only 38 years and is considered one of the leading examples of Early English architecture. The cathedral has the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom (123m/404ft). Visitors can take the “Tower Tour” where the interior of the hollow spire, with its ancient wood scaffolding, can be viewed. The cathedral also has the largest cloister and the largest cathedral close in Britain (80 acres). The Cathedral contains the world’s oldest working clock (from AD 1386) and has one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta (all four original copies are in Britain). Although commonly known as Salisbury Cathedral, the official name is the Cathedral of Saint Mary. In 2008, the Cathedral is celebrating the 750th anniversary of its consecration in 1258. • Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags, Edinburgh, Scotland. Arthur’s Seat is the main peak of the group of hills which form most of Holyrood Park, a remarkably wild piece of highland landscape in the centre of the city of Edinburgh, about a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city to a height of 251 m (823 feet), provides excellent panoramic views of the city, is quite easy to climb, and is a popular walk. Though it can be climbed from almost any direction, the easiest and simplest ascent is from the East, where a grassy slope rises above Dunsapie Loch. Many claim that its name is a derivation of a myriad of legends pertaining to King Arthur, such as the reference in Y Gododdin. However it has also been claimed that the name is a corruption of the phrase “Archer’s Seat” on the supposition that the rock was a significant point of city defence in the Middle Ages. Like the castle rock on which Edinburgh Castle is built, it was formed by an extinct volcano system of Carboniferous age (approximately 350 million years old), which was eroded by a glacier moving from west to east during the Quaternary, exposing rocky crags to the west and leaving a tail of material swept to the east. This is how the Salisbury Crags formed and became basalt cliffs between Arthur’s Seat and the city centre. From some angles, Arthur’s Seat resembles a sleeping lion. Two of the several extinct vents make up the ‘lions head’ and the ‘lions haunch’. • WILD & FREE / / Gentoo Penguin about to feed its Chick. (Antarctic Peninsula) Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice reduces vital food sources, such as krill. / / Gentoos are now listed as nearly endangered on the IUCN Red List. / / / / /

  • The water feature inside the cathedral in the United Kingdom. This is a HDR image from 3 shots taken 2 stops apart and then worked over. Nikon D90 and a Sigma 10-20mm lens @ 10mm f13 and I used a tripod because the exposure was down in the region of seconds. HDR has been used to try and capture the tones of the interior of the church and give a pretty true representation of it.

  • Taken at Salisbury, Barrington National Park on the Williams river. Down stream is Underbank which will be under water when the land is flooded to make the new Tilligerry Dam. Such beautiful place and a must visit! Nikon D700 70-200mm @200mm / 250sec, F/18, ISO-100 / ND400 filter

  • Salisbury Cathedral, to celebrate its 750th anniversary, had a new font installed, the culmination of an on-going project initiated 10 years ago. Designed by William Pye, arguably Britain’s most distinguished water sculptor, this is the Cathedral’s first permanent font for over 150 years. Cruciform in shape with free flowing water, it is installed in the middle of the main nave and reflects the ceiling nicely. (when it hasn’t got loads of little kids hands splashing about in it!)
