The Salinas Grandes are an enormous salt pan in Argentina’s Andean northwest, nearly as big in area as Luxembourg. Quecha people are employed to extract salt.

Las Salinas is located on the road to the lighthouse right across from Bahia Salinas. This attraction is surely worth a stop, the scenery is beautiful and quite amazing to see how the salt is collected. The sparkle of the dried salt is as the sun touches it is gorgeous. *The salterns are composed of estuary surrounded by natural mats that feds a series of artificial salt ponds with seawater. The Salt Flats have been functioning since 1525 according to historian Salvador Brau. *The coastal line borders sub-sea levels basins with inflow from the sea. Indigenous people occupied this site as early as the 14th century for the same reason the Spaniards came to prize it – nearby salt mines. These ruins are of one of the missions the Spanish built along the Salinas trade route, circa 1630 – 1680. The mission, named San Gregorio de Abo, was destroyed during the Pueblo Uprising / of 1680. The mountains in the background are part of the the Manzano Mountain range, near Abo, New Mexico. Pentax K110D, F11, ISO 200, 1/500, 90mm.

This tower, is sited next to the road that runs across the salt lakes at Santa Pola, Costa Blanca, Spain. What the tower was built for I have no idea. It was looking rather rugged until last year when they repaired it, by repointing the stones. Unfortunately they took all it’s character away! MAP Nikon D40 55-200mm

This is the stunning landscape where Massimo Troisi and Philippe Noiret worked together on the set of “il postino”, a Michael Redford & Massimo Troisi movie, on the aeolian island of Salina. This enchanting beach lies at the feet of Pollara. / Black lava sand, very high vertical walls of vulcanic material: the perfect place for a poet. And here I had a poet’s dream: the sea, like a liquid hand, was bringing stars on a black sky of sand, waiting for the night to see them shine…
