  • Photograph. Pendle Witch Country, in the Lancashire Pennines, is an area lying between (but also including) the north western edge of Bronte Country and the Ribble Valley, to the north and north east of which are Bowland, and the south western Yorkshire Dales respectively. The area is dominated by the dark brooding mass of Pendle Hill and made famous (nay infamous) for its grim and fiendish association with the “Witches of Pendle”… Places in and around Pendle Witch Country: Downham, this photo taken from the churchyard where some original Pendle Witches are buried.

  • The House of Seven Gables made legendary by American writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Visiting this place in winter means that you get practically a personal tour (three people plus the guide). The house is really cool and you learn quite a mixed bag. It looked nothing like this in Hawthorne’s time. It was completely remodeled and changed over the years. He wrote about it based on memories of a cousin who lived there. Around a 100 years ago, the house was nearly demolished but saved by woman who used it as a museum to raise money for charity. She had the house remodeled back to a romanticized (i.e. not entirely accurate) version of its colonial appearance.

  • Salem, Massachusetts is well known for the infamous witch trials of the 1600’s. Centuries later it’s a small city reachable by a quick train ride from downtown Boston. Although heavily touristed, it still manages to hold onto the feel of a quaint New England village. This weathered old home was basking in the sun on a bright winter afternoon. The quality of the light and the textures just really called to me and begged to be recorded.

  • I almost passed by this tiny pioneer home because it was buried in trees and weeds. Can you imagine living in a home about 15’ X 25’, raising a family and performing all the household duties required at that time? /

  • This shot was taken late in the afternoon just down the street from my house. I was hoping to catch the Geese flying in, but they must have got tied up in the Boston traffic, as they showed up after it got dark. This is a series of 5 RAW images which I used some HDR software to try and balance out the sun hitting the tree line and still be able to see the refelection in the pond

  • The town of Salem NC was one of the earlier settlements in the US. Settled by the Moravians as religious community in the early 18th century, it evolved quickly into one of the most successful economic centers of early America. The early settlers prided themselves in their architecture and craftsmanship which is evident in the structures that still survive there today. You can experience the culture as it was in the 1700’s when you meet and talk to people who dress in the style of the time and demonstrate skills of the craftsmen as it was originally performed. This is a window of the original Gunsmith shop of Timothy Vogler. It is described as the most authentic gunsmith shop in America. Skilled gunsmiths continue to produce custom muzzle loading rifles in the shop everyday. I’m not much into guns, but it is an amazing process to watch. The reflection in the windows is of a 250 year old home across the street that is currently a private residence. The distortion in the glass intrigues me because it denotes that it is probably the original panes that were used when the building was first constructed.

  • This man has been working in the gun shop every time I’ve gone in there. I believe his name is Tom. He and another gentleman have retired from their previous jobs and find great joy in recreating old muzzle loaders using the same techniques as the early settlers (see “Reflections of Old Salem”) These rifles are custom made for each individual who purchases them. When I asked where they get the bullets (musket balls) he told me that they make a mold for each gun and the gun owners have to melt down lead and make their own bullets. The guns are created from forms made from the original guns crafted by Timothy Vogler, the original owner of the gunshop in 1766. Old Salem, North Carolina.

  • This was taken on Halloween Night in October of 2008. This town comes so alive with music, costumes and great food on Halloween night! It’s a great place to be on Halloween night! I spotted this tree and just loved how it has grown and twisted into such an interesting shape. This tree couldn’t be in a better place…

  • The mill house at the Mission Mill Museum, Salem, Oregon, reflected in the dye house. Transparent watercolor on cold-pressed paper. Original is 13×16. Before beginning to paint I reserved the whites with removable liquid mask. I made an under-painting of the shadows in french ultramarine. Then I completed the siding in multiple washes beginning with a grayed down quinacridone deep red rose and adding two burnt siennas (one really orange and one almost red) and finishing with a layer of burnt umber.

  • I’ve always found Victorian and Queen Anne architecture just a tad sinister. In this painting of the Deepwood Estate, I bumped up the sinister feeling just a hair. Located in Salem, Oregon, the Deepwood Estate is an 1894 Queen Anne Victorian. It is on the National Registrar of Historic Homes. Transparent watercolor on cold-pressed paper. Featured by Painters in Modern Times. 112 views on 11/21/09.
