As some of you know I currently have a “Call for Art” out on the net for interested artists. More information about it is located here When talking with some artists, they felt the cost to ship their works to be in the show was too much for them, and also being that they live in other countries, attendance would not be something they would be able to do. So here is a solution that I have come up with. I will purchase your artwork off of Redbubble to be in the show. After the show, I will keep it for my personal collection to do with what I please with your permission of course. This will provide an opportunity for artists that have never had their work shown before a wonderful opportunity, as well as gaining international recognition for those who havent had a show in another country. If this is of interest to you, please place a link below of your pieces of artwork to be considered. The particulars about the show are in the link provided above. Please be sure to be in theme with the show. I look forward to purchasing some new works and also sharing your talent with others. : ) / ___________ / Please note this offer is now closed! Thank you to all whom have submitted for consideration! : )

  • 100 and a challenge ...

I’ve managed (by some miracle) to crack the 100 t-shirt sales mark. I know that there are loads of people on RB that probably do that in a month (I’m looking at you and your CCTV Government t-shirt Ross Robinson!) but if you’d told me I’d be able to do that a year ago, I’d have thought you were one of those crazy internet people who doesn’t spend enough time in the real world. To mark the occasion I’ve decided to throw out a little t-shirt design challenge with a difference. The main difference being that this one has a prize. I had all these crazy ideas about prizes. Helvetica DVDs, free t-shirts, gorgeous books on illustration and typography, free CDs etc. then I thought, you know what … this is going to cost a shedload to post from the UK and it’s coming up to Christmas … I reckon people would just prefer the cash. So pay attention cos this is how it’s going to go down. Important stuff first. The Prize/Incentive A guaranteed sale. Not very exciting right? Well it’s a bit more exciting if you put an 800% mark up on it. Now, I’ll most likely go for a girly fitted tee so by my calculations, that means you’ll earn yourself about £75.00 (approx $160.00 USD) from one shirt sale. Which is better than a kick in the face with a golf shoe. Upload your shirt at the normal price and if you’re the chosen one, I’ll let you know and we can arrange a time where you can bump the price up and I can make my pur-chase … The Theme The theme for this little challenge is Reveal Yourself. Now, before you get the digital camera out and start nuding up I should clarify. I’m looking for a design that features something revealing about your personality – not your anatomy. It could be designed in a style you love, feature a subject matter you’re passionate about, demonstrate your sense of humour or tell a story from your past. It’s open to wide interpretation. The Fine Print It must be uber cool as I’ve got to wear it and I need all the cred I can get New designs only Enter as many times as you like Post your designs in the comments below The challenge will close midnight (GMT) Sunday 21st of September, 2008 Bonus points will awarded for spending extra time in the tee community over the next few weeks, leaving comments and encouraging others Tag your work revealyourself (this bit is important) The final choice is up to me and I’ll pick the design I love the most Please pass this on to any t-shirt designers you think may be keen. It’s just a small incentive to encourage some new, killer t-shirt designs and a way of saying thanks to everyone who has bmailed, encouraged me, commented on my stuff and bought shirts since my first upload 10 months ago. I can’t begin to thank you enough :) Cheers, / Nat

  • 6 Quick Tips For Selling Your Art On RedBubble
    by Jo O'Brien

Keep your portfolio short and sweet. Show only y…

Keep your portfolio short and sweet. Show only your absolute best work and ensure your portfolio can be flicked through in under a minute. People have really short attention spans Use tags. But only use relevant tags which describe key features of the work. Use your journal to give buyers a glimpse into your motivations, inspirations and learning. Don’t put anything negative in it (people can see it!) Remove negative or critiquing comments from under artworks- potential buyers can read them and you don’t want them to be put off Personalise your work by adding meaningful descriptions that tell your audience about how the work was created, what it was inspired by or the story behind it Think about and make a deliberate decision on how much to charge for your art

  • Selling Art Through Galleries- My Advice

I recently received an email from a fellow RedBubbler and thought I should share my response… DISCLAIMER: this is just my opinion and advice so don’t take my word as gospel! ____________ Hi Jo, I ‘discovered ’ you on Red Bubble and love your work.. You mentioned you work for a gallery that takes work on consignment. I’m interested in getting some of my work into galleries but don’t know how to. My stuff is here… http://www.redbubble.com/URL So just wondering if you have some advice?? Cheers & thanks, ____________ Hey M First thing is you will notice that the footer of this email has all my phone numbers- please do not hesitate to call me and we can have a proper conversation about this. I have a lot of artists ask me about this and am only happy to help out. I have found that the best way to get your stuff into galleries is to do what you have just done- send an email with a link to your work. Your webiste is basically your CV in the art world – it doesn’t have to be flashy (and redbubble is totally appropriate) but having work that loads quickly is important. You will be lucky if a gallery spends more than 1-2 minutes looking at your site. The other thing you can do is to print out samples of 5-8 images of your work, a biography or artist’s statement and any quirky info that could be used to market you. Put this together into a CV or folio and make several copies. Then you do the door knock thing. If you take this option be aware of a few things- Gallery staff at some places (certainly not us though) can be quite snobby to artists who come off the street and try to sell their wares. I suggest being pleasant but do not try to take up too much of their time. I’m more receptive to a “here’s a copy of my folio, here’s my contact details, i’d love to have a chat some time but obviously now isn’t the best time for you- maybe give me a call if you’re interested?” than a lengthy rehearsed sales pitch. Each gallery will have a slightly different way of doing things. Some will ask for a tax invoice when you bring in art and they will just pay you when it sells. Other will ask for an invoice only once something has sold and they may or may not request a consignment note when you deliver your art. Other places do 90% of the paperwork for you but these are rare. We keep a running file of what work you bring in and if anything gets returned to you because it wasn’t selling. Then if something sells we call or email you the same While I’m on this I should mention that some galleries will not deal with you unless you have an ABN. GST normally doesn’t make a difference but I have heard of a couple of fussy places who have insisted on dealing with GST inclusive artists only- go figure? The other thing that changes between galleries is the mark up of your work. In some of the artist run galleries you can get a 30/70 split of the sale (with the artist being better off). Other places will rip you off majorly and mark up your work by more than 100% and therefore will get more money than you do when it sells. Don’t let people bargain with you for your cut and THEN try to add 10% on for GST- insist on bargaining on the final price inclusive of GST. I make this bargaining process sound difficult but the truth is most places have a policy about how they split things and you either take it or leave it- my advice is more to show you the difference between money grabbing and artist appreciating! Which brings me to my next point- look at the attitude of the gallery. Some places are really picky about what you give them to sell which can mean that they either have no idea OR it could mean that they know their clientelle really well. You just have to be good at reading people to wrok that one out. The places that I would steer clear of are the ones who don’t seem to fussed by what you give them or don’t really care about having a biography or any information about you. They should be interested is selling ‘you’ as a product as well as your stuff. You have to balance out the financial side of things with the personal side. At our galleries we go 50/50 on sales which is considered a bit high. The upside however is that you get a mini cheering squad who will rave about your amazing talents to anyone who glances at your work sideways. We don’t have artists complaining about the higher mark up because we make up for it in branding and promotion you. This is a call each artist has to make for themself. If you’re stuff is considered sellable (which is decided on a case by case basis) we will give it a decent chance of selling- normally I put new stuff on display straight away or in the shop window. Then we see hwat the reaction is. Sometimes we find out very quickly that there is no interest, or everyone loves the image but thinks it is too small, or red, or badly framed or whatever. We aim to have open lines of communcation with our artists so that they don’t keep sending us stuff that no one wants! But in the end if after 4-6 weeks things are not going so well I send things back and invite the artist to try again if they begin experiementing with a different syle or medium. I certainly invite you and any other RedBubble artists to contact me about selling work through our galleries. We are always very keen to see what people have got to offer. RedBubble is about much more than selling your creative work – but I know this is an important issue for many people. And it’s been very interesting to see what work sells on RedBubble – the diversity of content is enormous. It should come as no surprise to anyone – but we all have very different taste! Between 1 September and 5:30 pm on 26 September RedBubble has sent out 1250 sales notification e-mails. This excludes all self purchases – and many of these notifications represented a multiple item sale. What’s also been interesting is to observe the relationship between the sales and a person’s level of activity on RedBubble. I’ve included a graph (below) that shows the top 15 sellers on RedBubble by number of items sold (x-axis) versus their comments on the site (y-axis). Some of the best sellers on the site are very active (9000 comments) but some are not active (2 comments). My interpretation of this data is that you don’t have to win any popularity contents to sell work on RedBubble. Comments are a wonderful way to provide encouragement and support on RedBubble (please use the critique forum for constructive criticism) – and please continue to use them for this purpose. In fact the encouragement we can provide each other on our ‘creative journey’ is one of the most special and important things about RedBubble. - Peter

  • I'll swap you my house for your art

I’m having the equivalent of a garage sale, except that money is not allowed. I will be accepting only 2 forms of payment – wine or art. Everything in my house is going: My art supplies, furniture, clothes, props, a kitchen full of stuff in great condition (I don’t cook) and some outdoor furniture. Basically, open a cupboard, and if there is stuff in it, you can swap it for art or wine. At the end of it all, I’m hoping to plaster my walls with swapped art and have people around to stare at it while drinking swapped wine. Why? Why not. / Date: Sunday October 5th / Location: 154 Albert Street, Brunswick / / I’d also like to invite other people to bring their things along to swap for art or wine. Drop me a line if you’re interested. So far jemimalovesbigted will be joining me so better ask what wine she likes too!

Just got back to lunch to find that I have sold my first framed print and it’s now my second sale to the US! Yippee, I did a victory lap around the office, only a handful of people in it at the time, and I’m really chuffed. The piece was Parisian Bike / / I’m really rapt, and really hope the nice person that bought it really can enjoy it. I’ve also got to thank those that have bought Front Row Seats, Parisian Bike and Eilean Donan as cards these are now some of my best sellers, and I thank you all. Yay!

I would like everyones opinion about / 1- what sells- is it a view that makes a serene or emotive statement about the landscape? Is it a visual diorama unique and vibrant, or equally a quaint digital impression of paint strokes or a vector creation in line and tone? or maybe its something else? / lets not be vague here and say its in the eyes of the buyer- lets try and be specific…..can we ? / AND question 2- / How do you gauge the quality of your work in view to its saleability? / might it be about the content, the attention to the digital reproduction, the composition, whether it has a contemporary appeal,......is it just luck to find a buyer, or is it about exposure, in this case internet exposure, or in view of the proposed exhibition coming up, exhibition exposure???? / I would like to hear from the people who have bought work here and the people who have sold something, and everyone elses’ opinion especially those experienced in marketing. / I look forward to our discussion… / xxJiennxx

  • A RedBubble calendar review - with pics

By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

I’m one helluva lucky sheila lately okay folks.. i wouldn’t normally do this, and i’ve had a busy month…so i haven’t had a chance to journal any of my sales as i usually do in my weekly journal, but heck.. I’ve just gotta share this with yoo lot!! normally on a very good month I may make a few sales…i might make $80 or so… / but i have had a record this month.. and it may never ever ever happen again, so / while i’m riding high on this very happy wave, and the tide doesn’t seem against / me, but for me…i would like to share this extremely happy news. i was reading earlier about rubyred having sold some 70 tshirts this month, and / that little green envy was rising up….and i was stuffing him right back down…and / trying to be happy for others and their sales…. now i have added up my RB and / zazzle sales, sales to a UK shop who bought some prints wholesale through / another bubbling friend and an original painting sold to the USA (and i will include / one sale of my book)... and the total sales for me this month including tshirts, / cards, prints, books, originals, shoes, buttons and calendars totals the number / 88 and near on $800!!! which is terrific since i was broke as a bloody badger.............and now i’ll be able to do some framing of original paintings for those special events we call art exhibitions that are coming up toward the end of the year!! I think this will be the one and only time I’ll ever be able to say such a thing ever happened, to have such an incredible amount of sales in one month is completely unheard of for me, and my head is sorta spinning.. so i have to thank all of those people who have supported me, continue to support me, enjoy my work, put up with my antics… man, i love you all!!!! i feel so grateful…forever grateful…..thank you, thank you, thank you :D Love and peace, light and day, giggles and chuckles, smiles all round..... / Karin xoxoxoxox Wikepedia says In Asian culture Eighty-eight (88) symbolizes fortune and good luck since the word 8 sounds similar to the word Fā (发, which implies 发财, or wealth, in Mandarin). This is based on my experience working at markets and in “painting and sculpture” galleries. I have heard of exclusively photographic galleries (collaborative- not just for a single photographer) which are an easier market but I am yet to find one in Melbourne. DISCLAIMER: The opinions presented in this journal are not a substitute for professional advice and are based on analogical evidence Things that I have found help to sell photography are: / 1) Taking a strikingly lucky, creative and one off image that others would struggle to replicate / 2) Presenting your photos in an original way / 3) Providing support material to the seller about the image and yourself / 4) Signing the image and providing info on the back / 5) Having a variety of photos available for sale / 6) Only having one copy of each image on display Things I have found detract from selling photography / 1) Inferior or unsuitable framing or packaging / 2) You are selling a whole bunch of your images and most of them look similar- or more so, look like you took them all on the same day / 3) No information about the image is available / 4) No image about the photographer is available / 5) I hate to say it but photographers with birthdates in the 1980s should consider omitting this information from their biography because youth = inexperience in the minds of some buyers. The exception seems to be works using a lot of photomanipulation. / 6) Damaged prints or packaging / 7) And it might have seemed the most obvious point but images that are not interesting, or that do not fufil a decorative need There are many ways of presentaion your images including: / 1) Loose prints or posters / 2) Matted prints (and whether to sign the image or the mat) / 3) Canvas Prints / 4) Framed Prints / 5) Putting your images on other products (tastefully) Generally speaking, bad presentation will doom the sale of even the most amazing photograph and that the more creative and unusual your presentation, the more attention you and your work will recieve. Who has some other tips?

Thank you to Benjamin Ruskin: for purchasing a print of Bubbles As I told him, via bubblemail, while it’s nice to have a sale, it’s even nicer when the person who has made the purchase is so darned talented. I was a bit surprised when he commented so nicely in the first place, especially after seeing his work, because I, personally, think he’s way out of my league. If you haven’t seen his work yet, go and take a look. It’s beautiful stuffies in that there gallery.

RedBubble – Taking it to the next level? Why are we here? a) A platform in which to exhibit our artwork / b) A place to admire and be inspired by the work of others. / c) Ultimately we would all like to sell our work. I am very pleased to note that lately the Bubble is also becoming a social network. I wait for the comments from such as Meach ready to fall off my chair with laughter. But unlike Facebook (“See you down the pub at 9pm M8T”) the Bubble has PURPOSE!! / And the purpose is for the production of BEST WORK. There are those out there who love art and buy it for that reason. But there must be billions out there who think art is something you have to take out a second mortgage in order to purchase. And yet here we are offering for sale reasonably priced original and brilliant artwork. Red Bubble and in my own modest way are promoting the works. You recall I made the suggestion a while back that my fellow moderators should do some promotion work specific to their own groups. I was a bit sad to note that quite a few rejected my journal suggestion to their group. Hope they took it on board anyway. There has been a lot of hot air expelled recently about reply buttons, taking offence and unpleasant criticisms. In a way this is good because it brings peeps out of the woodwork to discuss. Which brings me to my point (at last!)…… It seems to me that in order to sell to the masses we really do need follow the overiding purpose of the Bubble and display only BEST WORK. / To this end I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the use comments box. Superb, wonderful and stunning are fine where appropriate but let’s take it a stage further; help others to achieve the Best Artwork. Perhaps an example would be – some months ago I spotted a seascape where the horizon was sloping downhill. I bravely asked if this was ‘meant’ and if not using my limited experience of photoshop I explained how to level it up. A few days ago I spotted another thing that could improve an artwork but wasn’t brave enough to place it in comments and sent a bubblemail instead. I was relieved to note that both comments were gratefully received Occasionally there is a dull photo that is good as a concept but would benefit 100% just with the addition of a drop of ‘contrast’. Two things then. BE BRAVE and use the comment box to help that person (and others) to technically to improve their artwork. And two – all of us should write the following on a post-it and stick it on our monitors, “I will not take offence if someone suggests an improvement to my work”. I am not suggesting that one should suggest conceptual improvements but comments like ‘why not re-shoot from a different angle’ or ‘crop it so the object is filling the frame much more’, are acceptable. In other words stick to technical comments. / Peeps offering comments like “That picture is cr*p” should be banned from the site I reckon. Let’s all of us get super-interactive. Use the comment box to boost the standard of our artwork so as the masses start to log-on big time they are presented with Best Work. / Over all remember the words next to the comments button – PLESE PLAY NICE. As a final thought to moderators – I will be seeking ways of splitting the Watersports and Activities group artwork into sub-groups i.e. Sailing, rowing, surfing, underwater, etc etc so that when a punter or advertising agency comes on line it will narrow their search. If anyone can help me with that I won’t be offended – honest. LOL LOVE & PEACE / & “ALRIGHT THEN MY BIRDS, MY HANSOMES!!!!! ‘avin a good day do ‘ee”. P.S. That’s A Proper Cornish greeting hence no question mark at the end of the greets. The second one responds with “yes” or “Alright Boy” or “maid”. Honestly, how can anyone take offence at being called ‘Hun’ – We are in a global Village now. Everyone has a different up-bringing / social education / way of being. Andy / Moderator / Watersports & Activities Group.
