  • Near my old home, in Hanno, is Arima dam. Looking west on a winter afternoon, the mist and interlocking valleys entranced me… It wasn’t until later that I recognized Fuji-san nestling in the mist…

  • Right infront of me, a team of blue clad men were readying themselves to tow their procession float. Their silken kimonos were much more grand than the happi coats and yukata of other teams. I shot this detail from behind.. and was very lucky with the lighting.

  • I shot about 60 frames of this wonderful old pumping tower at the dam end of Sayamako in Japan. Hand held, but I think I got it..

  • Just as I turned to head back home – my fingers were about as much use as frozen chipolatas at this point – the far side of Motokaji rail bridge was blasted with a stray burst of winter sun & the wind subsided just long enough to get this reflection using Irumagawa as a mirror..

  • I imagine this shutter door was once navy blue, but time and the elements have taken their toll.

  • Stumbling out of the back end of a deep wood near my home, I found a huge boating/fishing lake that I didn’t previously know about. Needless to say all the fish were in the boating half of the lake – they’re not stupid! The lake itself wasn’t so picturesque, but the red and yellow of these boats caught my eye… After the event, I even find myself liking the swans, and am glad that I rattled off a few shots thinking there might just be something worthwhile among them…

  • Taking a grossly overexposed shot and reversing it to achieve a negative, and then pulling and pushing it with contrast and saturation I arrived at a more nightmarish conclusion. In normal light, the metallic tangle would have been flat grey, but horror abounds when you present it completely out of context.

  • You can stop rubbing your eyes now… it really is one of my shots! This giant robot is actually an old image of a kiddies fairground ride at Miyazawako in Japan, shot from a low angle into the sun for dramatic effect. Today I dug it out and spent about 3 hours post processing it,- magic erasers, patching & cloning, HDR, Orton, various gradient fills, tweaks to saturation, contrast, brightness & opacity… WHY???... because the trees and other fairground rides in the background were really annoying AND I thought it was about time I taught myself how to do more than just add borders in Photoshop.

Model Taiyou Yokoyama Memory Bouquet / / Memories created from two united, / loving hearts, is a gift to truly treasure. / From each shared moment, precious memories / blossom, bestowing perfect pleasure. / Each cherished memory is like a flower / blooming, among the thorns and thistles of life. / The flowers must be cultivated by communion of / body and soul, watered by tears of joy and strife. / The blooms must be daily nurtured, with / warmth of love, laughter and compassion. / And daily maintained, with distant / dreams and pleasant, passing passions. / So collect every unique, beautiful, fantastic, / flower through all the happy years. / Create a memory bouquet that will comfort, / when sorrow gives birth to tears. • Taken last September when I was going through a butterfly phase. I spent a lot of time on my back waiting for them to land… which gave the neighbors another source of entertainment as well!

  • This was taken at one of my favorite festivals. The juninichi (12th Day) carnival in Saitama, Japan. It’s held on the 12th night of December every year and people go to buy decorative bamboo bear paws of all sizes which symbolize the raking in of money. They range from the cheap, about 10 centimeters across to the expensive meter long versions which cost in the region of $1000. These are usually purchased by companies hoping to make some money in the new year. The whole place has a vibrant, exotic but dark atmosphere to it with multi colored stalls selling strange food and a traditional ghost house and snake ladies and the like. I love wondering around in the crowded and tightly packed atmosphere, taking in the sights, sounds and excitement of the people. I’ve never yet been able to do it justice with my photos but I’ll try again this year…

  • If the flapping of a butterfly wing can change the course of a hurricane, then imagine the consequences of four….....

  • Planned to go to the beach on my free day, but due to disturbing dreams got up too late to do that. Spent a couple of hours in local coffee shop lethargic and listless until I decided to push myself out of it by jumping on a train to Tokyo. Got my ticket, watched the train pull up and then decided to go in the other direction and changed platforms. Spent the day in a park I hadn’t visited in 15 years, thinking about this, that and the other, sometimes taking photos and eventually this, an upside down reflection of ruffled nature. Sums up my whole day really…
