  • Hamerton Wildlife Park Zoo / Hamerton / Near Sawtry / Cambs UK Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals and waste which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation, including waste tips. It breeds in a stick nest in trees in much of Africa south of the Sahara.

  • In the Sahara Desert a lone palm tree grows and provides a good place for a camp site.

  • This photo was taken on my last night in a Toureg camp in the Sahara desert in the north of Mali (just south of the Algerian border). The sunsets in the desert were absolutely stunning and with no electricity within 100s of kms there was absolutely no light pollution either so the stars when the sun went down were almost as good!

  • The seemingly endless Erg dunes of the Western Sahara Desert. This photo was taken at the village of Chinguetti in Mauritania on the edge of the desert. The dunes are slowly advancing westward and are already enveloping the eastern side of the village which will eventually be consumed by the sands like its predecessor which now lies buried some distance away.

  • Shot in the Sahara desert in Libya. Nikon D300, 12-24mm at 12mm, f18, 1/100, ISO 400. / . / / . /

  • Shot just before a sand storm hit us. The color version was quite washed out and listless with a dirty orange glow throughout the image. I really liked the light on the sand hills so was able to salvage a bad image into what i feel is acceptable b&w. / Nikon D300, 80-400mm at 200mm, f8, 1/250 sec, ISO 200. / . /

  • Early morning on a little set of Dunes a short rise up from the banks of the Nile. Even though the Nile brings life to Egypt, the desert is never far away. I loved the funky shapes and colors of these palms as the glow of the sun cast first light on them.

  • Shortly after daybreak on a little set of dunes adjacent to the Nile River somewhere between Aswan and Luxor. The sands of the desert are highlight by shadows in the sands and the sky is putting on a show for us. It’s not quite a lone tree shot what with the trees on the horizon, but it’s close!

  • These hard working donkeys were taking a short break from carrying tourists around the base of the Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser in the desert near Cairo, Egypt. The donkey or ass, Equus africanus asinus, is a domesticated member of the Equidae or horse family, and an odd-toed ungulate. The ancestors of the modern donkey are the Nubian and Somalian subspecies of African wild ass. The African Wild Ass was domesticated around 4000 BC. The donkey became an important pack animal for people living in the Egyptian and Nubian regions as they can easily carry 20% to 30% of their own body weight and can also be used as a farming and dairy animal.
