The Secretary Bird, Sagittarius serpentarius, is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, it is usually found in the open grasslands and savannah of the sub-Sahara.Although a member of the order Falconiformes, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards, vultures, and harriers, it is so distinctive that it was given its own family, Sagittariidae. It enjoys a certain fame in Africa, specifically Sudan and South Africa, serving as a prominent emblem on both nations’ coats of arms. From a distance or in flight it resembles a crane more than a bird of prey. The Secretary Bird is largely terrestrial, hunting its prey on foot, and other than the caracara it is the only bird of prey to do so habitually. Adults hunt in pairs and sometimes as loose familial flocks, stalking through the habitat with long strides. Prey consists of insects, small mammals, lizards, snakes, young birds, bird eggs, and sometimes dead animals killed in brush fires. Larger herbivores are not hunted, although there are some reports of Secretary Birds killing young gazelles.

Their restlessness, if excessive, can jeopardize more than their own stability. some Sagittarians risk becoming playboys, wasting their lives away in frivolous pursuits. Others can develop a moralizing, religious fanaticism or else turn into hypocrites, their inner prudishness disguised by an outward appearance of joviality. Another side of the religiosity which is a danger in Sagittarians is superstition.

This is a pastel chalk drawing that I did in the late 80’s, early 90’s ~ sometime after she played with Sean Connery as a Bond girl (Domino), my husband thought she was to die for, so I drew this for him. It had been buried for quite some time, so I photographed and edited her in photoshop7 with Redfield plug-in fractilius to bring her back to life. / As a sister Cherokee, I have always admired her works, although not very thrilled with her choices for husbands – LOL ;)

Colored pencils on Bristol board, / 12 x 9 / 2008 Another Astroportrait. Isobel is my daughter, a triple Sagittarius (Sun, Moon and Rising Sign), with a predominance in Fire and Water. I wanted that her portrait had a surreal, magical quality, what I achieved using strong colors and abstract elements. My idea was to portray her as a little elf, as a fun thing. A unicorn was chosen to keep her company: a “lighter” symbol for Sagittarius, more appropriate for a child’s portrait than the traditional centaur. An open field with trees which leaves remind red flaming hearts compounds the background. Isobel is all heart, a spirit full of passion and intensity. A river runs trough the field – the water quality of her personality. Differently from the mysterious ocean water of my own portrait, peaceful Isobel’s water nurtures and refreshes, representing the caring side of her personality. On the other side of the background we see a deep sky, symbol of the desire for expansion and unlimited freedom of Sagittarius. Two hummingbirds, symbols of optimism – another trait of Sagittarius – come out of the deep blue. On her hair, a crown of lotuses, flower I like to use to represent the sign of Scorpio. Although Isobel is not a Scorpio herself, she’s got a formidable stellium (an alignment of planets) in this sign, what gives her a lot of Scorpio characteristics. The triskele on the right top shows the glyph of Sagittarius and the color red, for Fire. Red is also in one side of her clothes – the other is blue, for Water. Related work: / Ariel and The Lion

With his arrow aimed ahead, he is ready for a challenge, and in fact loves to win. As half man, half horse, his basic animal instincts combined with a sense for adventure make him perfect for taking risks; however this centaur’s risks are calculated, for with a human mind comes a sense of thought, searching and philosophy. OK.. this really is the last! I had received so many Bmails about the original Sagittarius being the only man in a women’s world, that I knew I had to change it, before the poor man was eaten alive. I know this will not please everyone, but at least the series is more cohesive now. I certainly prefer this version. I promise there will not be any more!
