Fuck it’s a long way to Traralgon. A long, bogan-infested, tinned bourbon way to Traralgon. / You find four unoccupied seats. Lap top on one, back pack on another, ass on the third. You set your boundaries. The velcro of your computer bag releases, your lap top opens like a giant clam. Ten minutes until the train is scheduled to leave Spencer Street. Southern Cross. Whatever. / Four emancipated youths collapse into the cluster of seats to your left. Each wears a variation on a black theme. Each has hair draped carefully across their eyes. Faux-righteousness oozes out with foot odour and grease. / Goths. / No, emos. / You snort a breath out through your nose and focus on the screen. The train pulls out. Dandenong arrives. More people get on. Young mothers pour out of tight jeans. Two elderly Chinese women share a shopping jeep. Men in overalls and chapped boots carry faded bags. The snack bar opens. Packets rustle. Cans crack exhalations of carbonated air. / The emos are quiet. The two facing forward watch the snack bar. Their eyes are bright. They swallow saliva. They’re maybe fourteen. One sees you watching. She has a safety pin through her lip which becomes erect when she smiles. / ‘You like?’ she says. If she’s trying for Nabokov, it’s not working. / You think of your boundaries. ‘Yeah. Great.’ Show humanity but not interest. Back to the monitor. / ‘We did them ourselves,’ Lolita persists. / The kid next to her smiles as well and pushes his tongue against the back of his lip, jiggling a corresponding pin. / ‘And, see.’ The girl draws a long, thin cord out of a grubby pocket. One end loops, the other has a silver clasp. It’s a cat leash. Silver. She presses down on the clip to open it and connects it to her safety pin. Her eyes stay on you but her hand passes the end of the leash to her boyfriend. / He takes it and leans forward to gauge your interest. / You smile at him as well. / ‘Hey, man,’ the boyfriend says, tucking his hair curtain behind a white ear. ‘Could we get some change for the snack bar?’ / Four pairs of mascaraed eyes wait for you. Remember the boundaries. ‘No. Sorry.’ You open a new file, type nonsense on a blank screen and wait for the abuse. / From the reflection in the window you see one of the emos elbow another. They blush through their make up. / You keep typing. / The one that asked you for money asks the others for food. They shake hollow faces. / ‘Should have pinched more,’ says Lolita’s boyfriend. / ‘And a drink. I’m thirsty, hey?’ The group nods at Lol. ‘Could have pinched heaps more.’ / ‘I’d never steal from people, though. Only shops.’ The boyfriend offers this discreetly across the aisle. / You watch with your ears only. / ‘Yeah,’ Lol is agreeing. ‘And only big shops. Not milk bars and that.’ / ‘I’d steal from Mackas,’ says the quiet emo, his legs draped into the aisle. / ‘Fuck Mackas.’ This from Boyfriend. ‘That’s not even food, Des.’ / Des? Your lips twitter at the corners. / ‘My mum is going to go insane when we get home,’ says the other backwards-facing emo quietly. He’s fatter than the others. / ‘Yeah. Do you reckon I’ll be able to crash at yours anyway?’ Des pulls threads from the cuff of his jumper. / Fatty nods then says, ‘I’m so broke.’ / Group laughter. / Lol kicks at an arm rest with a black spaceman’s boot. ‘Get a job then, you lazy fucker.’ Hysterics. It’s infectious. You purse your lips in refusal. / ‘Tickets please.’ The man is greying, his short-sleeved shirt shows faded yellow rings at the arm pits. / The emos look to each other like falling dominoes. They say nothing. / ‘Do you want me to get the cops on here at Drouin?’ the ticket inspector asks. / You watch the four kids shrink into their chairs. / You are holding your ticket between sweaty fingers. The heel of a spaceman boot thumps against a seat in time with your pulse. / The inspector pushes sour air through clenched teeth. He snatches your ticket, clicks a hole in it and moves further down the carriage. / ‘I’m fucked.’ Des’s jaw pumps in time with the boot. ‘My social worker is going to kill me.’ / The others are quiet. Fatty sniffs discreetly, watching his lap. Lolita unclips the leash from her lip. / Pakenham passes. / Boyfriend folds the leash in half, pulls it and releases it. It snaps, flexes, snaps. / You stand and lurch down the aisle. / A sweat-stained shirt sleeve raises and lowers rhythmically on the small platform between the carriages. You approach the ticket inspector who turns and throws the extinguished butt out on to the passing gravel. / ‘They’ve got no money. Those …’ You tip your head back towards your seat. / ‘Punks.’ Smoke trails from his nostrils. / ‘Emos,’ you whisper. / He squints one eye. ‘What?’ / ‘Look, could I buy their tickets? I mean, they’re just kids, and, well, if we could avoid getting the police involved …’ / You watch him watch you. His mouth splits open showing nicotine-stained teeth. He removes a soft pack from his shirt pocket and taps out another cigarette. He holds it tightly between thin lips, lights it and draws deeply. The inspector looks through the glass in the door to your cabin. ‘I’m not gonna fine em.’ Smoke blows out. ‘Just scare em a bit.’ / Your grip on the rail loosens. You feel the armpits of your shirt stain a complimentary navy. / The inspector takes another hard drag. He looks out across the rows of back fences. ‘It’s just not the same anymore,’ he says. You’re not sure if he means kids or the landscape. / Back in your seat you press your hands against the outside of your backpack. Your fingers identify the outlines of phone, wallet, keys. Nothing missing. / Drouin station approaches. Clothing rustles across the aisle. / You relinquish your boundaries. ‘Do you guys really have no money?’ You address Lolita but they all shake their heads in response. / ‘What did you tell that guy?’ Boyfriend asks you. / ‘Nothing.’ / ‘Nah, I saw you talking to him.’ Des bites a finger nail. / ‘He’s a good guy. Don’t worry.’ / Fatty and Lolita smile. Boyfriend looks out the window. You see his reflection superimposed on tiled rooves and dusk. / You doze. A stained shirt sleeve rouses you. ‘Traralgon’s next,’ the inspector says, tapping your arm. / You collect your laptop and backpack. The four seats across the aisle are empty. A chip packet and a bourbon and cola can have been rammed in between the arm rests. You check for your wallet. Phone. Keys. Still there. / The train slows and you stand, collect your bags and turn to exit. / On the last check to make sure you have everything you see it. A safety pin, shining, sits on the seat next to yours. The train has emptied. You smile as you bend, pick up the pin and put it in your pocket.

Whenever I’m driving, I see things that I’d love to photograph. A few times I’ve driven with my camera in my hand, snapping shots out the window. Now that I think of it, this seems rather dangerous.

Dear all. As we have received much kindness and giving towards the / Moore family, we have enough pledges towards a print to give. We will list all those who donate to both the print and to the emergency help fund, which will either go in the memorial book, or with the print. This is a fantastic reflection on you, who have demonstrated the caring nature of this community. Many people have expressed disappointment in not being able to make their contribution, so I researched and found a way to do so on paypal. (also inc’d in the previous journal entry.) There are a number of unexpected expenses the family has incurred due to the event, such as the Careflight helicopter coming out, and time off work. These things put an added pressure on a family at times such as these. The paypal system is easy, using their email address, which is family@origoblue.com.au Account name Glen Moore The link to paypal is here All ways of contributing to the family are greatly appreciated, and really make a difference to their lives. It is a really positive way to help someone when you’re not sure ‘what you can do”-here is another way. Thank you all for your generosity. kind regards xsunset

/ This was not easy to write. A lot has been left out. / / Joanna loves New Zealand . The beauty of the country and relaxed way of life are good enough reasons but it is the small things which most New Zealanders wouldn’t even register that makes her want to stay; the small things which reflect the country’s relative safety. / / It has taken her eight years to really feel settled here but now she won’t consider even a short visit to her place of birth. / / It wasn’t one experience that persuaded her to leave her family and friends, departing almost penniless for unfamiliar shores. A combination of life-threatening events persuaded her to take her traumatised children and leave forever. / / Joanna’s first brush with violence happened at home in an exclusive suburb which was considered safe in the early 1990s. When the massive stranger appeared at her front door one morning, Joanna did not consider herself to be in danger and answered his knock. He politely asked if she could give him a job. Her equally polite refusal brought an immediate response. Putting his foot inside the door, the man lunged forward and grasped her shoulder. / / Years later, describing this incident – and the many other subsequent violent threats to her- Joanna can vividly recall the scene and her reactions. She describes the cloudless day and the smell of her roses. She vividly recalls the man’s shiny skin and his smile. Joanna recalls the instant feeling of calm that overcame her, as if she were a tiny roebuck overcome by a lioness, beyond fear but resigned and totally aware of her vulnerability. / / In this first instance, the man got no further than her shoulder. Joanna’s eyes shine as she describes the speed of her German Shepherd, Jago. The dog launched himself from behind her and hit the man chest high, knocking him to the floor. Within seconds, the attacker managed to get to his feet and run off. She did not send the dog after him. / / Now a New Zealand citizen, Joanna and her sons sometimes play a little ritual when they go on shopping expeditions. They recite a litany of “freedoms” when exiting the supermarket. / / “We can carry our bags to the car without looking over our shoulders. / We can use an ATM without being mugged. / That man hasn’t got a knife. / Look, I am wearing jewelry. / We can stop at a red light.” / / / “Coming home after shopping was always scary. Even though the house was locked and security systems activated, I would always feel uneasy until I had checked each room and possible hiding place. Once I arrived home and the front door was slightly ajar. There was a blood trail inside. It went along the passage and into the master bedroom. We never discovered how it came to be there. / A friend of mine was alone in a locked house. Three men broke in through the roof. My friend jumped out the window of a second storey bedroom, breaking her leg. The intruders raped and stabbed her, leaving her for her husband to find, critically injured and permanently traumatized.” / / Ex-patriots regard our reactions to violent crime in a bemused way. Murders or abductions in New Zealand are national news. Over twenty thousand murders a year in their country of birth dwarf our statistics. Even the road toll is mind-boggling. Easter weekend realised 300 road fatalities. / / Joanna’s passion for animals drove her to be a vet nurse in her country of birth and she now works with animals in New Zealand , in arguably one of this country’s most dangerous occupations. Her colleagues sometimes question her willingness to approach P-addled gang members who have eviscerated their pit bulls, or violent farmers who have neglected their herds to the point of starvation. Recounting her previous experiences with knife and gun-wielding men, Joanna is aware of the danger but feels confident in her ability to sense when a situation is too dangerous and in her interpersonal skills when confronted. She has become much more aware since that day when Jago saved her. / / Once more she becomes preternaturally calm. / / “ I know I am deeply angry at these people for threatening me but I remain quiet. My senses become acute and I find the right words. Of course, if I feel bad vibes I will not enter a property without backup.” / / New Zealand ’s relatively safe environment did not impact on her immediately. It took three years before Joanna relaxed enough to let her teenage daughter share a taxi to town with friends. She would not let her younger children walk by themselves the two hundred metres to the corner dairy. Once, at an airport in her homeland, when she was momentarily distracted, her two-year-old son was taken by the hand and led away. Fortunately Joanna spotted the pair and was able to snatch her son back. From then on, for outings, the little boy was kept on a lead. Abductions of children are not rare and the reasons for them are of nightmare material. Young boys are in high demand. Their penises are removed for medicine. Men with AIDS are under the impression that having sex with babies will provide a cure. Joanna recounts a story of a friend’s twelve-year-old who was abducted and never seen again. / / Muggings are routine, almost expected; certainly not remarkable. Joanna’s mugging was in a busy shopping mall. She was hit from behind and knocked to the ground. Shoppers threaded their way around her and her children as money was taken. When it was over, after a few minutes of dazed inaction, still unaided, she managed to get up and move away, thankful that she had not worn her wedding ring and therefore still had all her fingers. / / For Kiwis, the Sunday drive in the country is taken for granted. Such an excursion would not be have been considered, unless a group of friends decided to form a convoy. / One windy night in the Waikato , I was driving with Joanna when a work gang flagged us down. A tree had blown across the road and the friendly road worker gave us advice on the appropriate detour. Joanna admitted later that she would have found it difficult to stop and wind her window down to talk to the man. / / Arriving home after work necessitated a close scrutiny of bushes by the gate before leaving the relative safety of the car. / / Nights in her home country’s capital were times of unease. Even the feel of the .38 under the pillow offered little comfort. / / “It was a big gun, heavy. It was hard to hold but anything smaller would not have stopped a big man.” / / Houses are fortresses. Armed guards, dogs, massive, double-glazed windows with bars and lockable, security bedroom doors are features of contemporary town houses. / / I have met several immigrants. Each one has confirmed Joanna’s description of beautiful scenery and terrifying humanity. / / Joanna has always had an affinity for animals. She has developed bonds with many, not the least with Jago. She has a seemingly endless store of horror tales of unimaginable cruelty from her time as a vet nurse. Ritualistic torture was commonplace.. There is one particular memory that is too horrific to recount, even after ten years. Often her only recourse was euthanasia, sometimes in the presence of the perpetrator. / / Her compassion for animals drove Joanna to another country to assist with the release and rehabilitation of bears, permanently crushed into immobility in small cages, teeth and claws removed, with catheters inserted into their gall bladders for the extraction of bile. On arrival, airport police berated her for hours, yelling into her face. Joanna did not understand a word but it didn’t require a great deal of insight to guess the reason for their anger. Her ability to remain calm and quiet was, once more, a boon. Eventually, her passport was thrown at her. The full story of her work with bears and the brave people who continue to do so can be told at a later date. / / I am not writing this to criticise any other country. Cruelty can be found everywhere. So can compassion and great kindness. It is just that I am profoundly grateful to be living in New Zealand . It has beauty, in nature and in its people. Let us preserve that ,so we don’t ever have to suffer experiences such as Joanna’s.

The nature of modeling for photographers and artists puts you in a vulnerable position. For a length of time you will be in close proximity to an individual you may not know very well and in unfamiliar or isolated environments. For the first time model, or even an experienced model, a job offer can be very exciting. But first, take a few minutes to think about your safety. / Put your best foot forward – Jo O’Brien Your Online Identity / While the vast majority of people you meet online are perfectly normal, lovely people such as yourself, there are a few people who are unstable or dangerous. To reduce your chances of ever encountering a shady character, prevention is the best solution. Be aware of the images you publish of yourself. They should look professional and unless you are seeking work in the adult industry, should not be overly sexual. While details like your measurements and colouring may be required, personal details or contact details should be hidden. Contact Details / Don’t use your real name online, and don’t publish your telephone number or an email address where possible. There are easy to use forms you can add to your website that will allow interested parties to contact you without publishing your email address. Where an email address must be supplied, it is a good idea to set up a secondary one using a free site like hotmail, gmail or yahoo especially for this purpose. The only place you should ever need to supply a physical address is on a model release form on the day of the shoot. Where possible use a P.O Box address or the address of a family member (with permission). Always give out your mobile number instead of a land line number and let the photographer know you do not answer calls if you do not recognise the number. / Behind the scenes – Skyrocket Fights Clip – ARPhotography Find Out About The Photographer Or Artist / Before you agree to work with a photographer or artist there are some simple checks you can do to help you verify if they are professional and trustworthy. The first is to ask for a full physical address and telephone number where they can be contacted. Ask to see samples of their work and ask some general questions about how they like to work. Ask for referees from other models they have used and take the time to call a couple of people and ask them about how their shoot/session went. If the photographer or artist is reluctant to hand over such information, you should reconsider working with them. A professional will be happy to offer you these details. At this stage you should also be weary of overly optimistic promises about your modeling career or unusually high pay rates which could indicate a scam. Also be aware that TFP (Time for Prints/Photos) and particularly low pay may indicate an amature photographer. Be aware that there are scam artists who ask models to pay for services that are never fulfilled. Know What Is Expected Of You / Before you agree to a shoot or session, discuss the artist’s ideas and make sure you fully understand what is required of you. In particular ask about what you will be wearing (or not wearing) and the kind of tone or theme they are hoping to achieve. Who will be doing your hair and make up. Ask to see reference shots or sketches or see examples of what they are hoping to replicate. If you feel that they are not answering you fully, it is a good idea to clarify, even if you feel you are asking the obvious. For example say “I don’t understand exactly what you’re saying- do you mean that there will be nudity involved?” or “It sounds like this is pornographic work- am I right?” By being blunt and showing that you are not afraid to ask, it will encourage the artist to explain clearly what they want from you. Now is also a good time to ask if they will be shooting digital and if you will be able to see a few images during the shoot as you proceed. / Shoot the model – Michael Alesich How To Say No / At this point you may decide that you do not want to proceed. No matter how much time and effort the photographer or artist has gone to at this point, or how much they insist that they want you, your rights, safety and professional reputation come first. Be polite but firm. Do not get into a lengthy discussion. A response such as “Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to discuss this project with me. Unfortunately it is not a project I wish to do (at this time). Thank you again for your interest” should be sufficient. Traveling and Accomodation / Where possible arrange your own transport, the best option being a friend who will drive you and wait for the shoot to be completed before taking you home again. Do not accept offers to be collected from your home or work. If you need to stay overnight, arrange to have your own hotel room, ensure your room is booked under your name and check it before your departure. Never ever ever stay at the private residence of someone you do not know very well. When away from home travel by taxi. / The Movie Set – Michael Alesich Meeting the Photographer or Artist / Meet new photographers for the first time in a neutral public location. Never in a private residence or studio. The best meeting places are known to you both but neither of you have any special attachments or familiarity with it. In an instance where you want to avoid this person in the future, you do not want them to know your favorite cafe or hang out. Be suspicious if the location of a meet up or shoot changes shortly before meeting. This is one way that untrustworthy people attempt to get models alone where their friends and family do not know where they are. A photographer should have previously scouted a location and be able to give an address or map reference. In isolated areas, always bring a chaperone. Just Prior to a Shoot or Session / To ensure your safety, contact the photographer or artist and confirm the time, duration and place of the shoot. Even if you are bringing a chaperone, tell someone else who is not coming with you where you will be and for how long. Ask them to have their mobile switched on during your shoot. Some models wisely arrange a ‘silent alarm.’ For example you might arrange for this person to call you mid shoot and ask you what you are doing later on. If you answer “I’m having a quiet one with friends” they will know everything is good, if you say “my boyfriend is taking me to dinner” they will know you are nervous and if you say “I’m going out with my friends to party” that you need them to act to get you out of there. You should never need to complete a model release form before the day of a shoot but it is a good idea to read through a copy of it and understand it or arrange to use your own version. / Working for the Man by Melissa Vowell During The Shoot or Session / There is certain professional etiquette that is expected of all parties at a photo shoot. Don’t be convinced to pose in a way that you are unsure of or uncomfortable in. If you are asked to do something you are unsure of it is perfectly acceptable to say you do not want to. One tip is to bring along your own happy snap digital camera. If you are asked to do something you are not sure of, hand the photographer your camera and ask them to take one or two shots and show you first. Then you can check them before proceeding. In the days of digital, is is fairly reasonable on small shoots to ask to flick through the images briefly during a break or at the end of the shoot. If you have brought a chaperone, ensure they are not disruptive to the shoot with the obvious exception being if they see anything below board. Apologize for the inconvenience but leave your mobile phone switched on. After The Shoot / Model release forms should always be completed after the shoot, often on the same day or when you have viewed and approved the proofs or contact sheet. Never sign anything you do not understand. Some models who represent themselves bring along their own model release form which they know and understand well. Once the shoot is completed, within earshot of the photographer, it is a good move to call a friend and let them know you are leaving and how long until you get home. / Lorne ‘07 – Happy Snapping – James Price What to do if you are Harassed or Stalked? / The first thing to do is tell someone else about it- your friends and family. When you are stressed, having these people to support you will make a lot of difference to your ability to think clearly and make assertive decisions. If the person is sending you letters, emails, text messages or any other correspondence it is important that you keep it even if it is upsetting. The general advice given by police is not to feed the harasser by reacting, instead ignoring their attempts to upset you. If after a couple of weeks they have not relented or they make a serious threat against you, you should call your local police and seek advice and support. Many people are reluctant to bring the police into these sorts of matters however it is the only real way to help prevent other people falling victim and your testimony may be the case winner for another person who has already suffered the same as you. All this information sounds very pessimistic and negative and I really wish their was no need for it. The reality is that most photographers and artists are above board, professional and generally lovely to work with, but the tiny minority create enough horror stories and bad press that it’s important to know the risks. In all situations my best advice to you is to use your common sense, and trust any negative gut instincts you have about people. Your safety is far more important than any career opportunity and any amount of popularity or validation. / Lights Camera Action by Jo O’Brien

Being a simple soul, there are many things in life that puzzle me. Why, for instance, after you’ve bought a replacement for something that is lost, does the thing that is lost suddenly make a miraculous reappearance? And why, after you’ve bought something from a shop, will it no longer fit back into its original packaging? The thing that puzzles me most, however, is the movie musical §. One minute the musical is a normal movie, with no indication of a latent tendency to terpsichorean excess. The next, the leads and any extras who happen to wander onscreen are leaping around and singing with unabashed enthusiasm, regardless of weather conditions or restrictive nineteenth century clothing. It’s all very odd, particularly since this unusual behaviour is regarded as perfectly normal by any bystander watching the harmonious events unfold. This is not to say that movie musicals can’t be instructive and educational, and I finally have proof to back up this reckless claim. There is a scene in the movie ‘Calamity Jane’ that particularly struck a chord with me recently. The winsome Doris Day plays the eponymous tomboy heroine. At the start of the film, Calamity Jane is dressed in practical frontier clothing. But then she falls under the influence of the city-born Katie Brown, who introduces her to the concept of femininity and the crinoline dress. It is while wearing her new attire that Calamity falls into a creek and emerges covered from head to toe in wet, sticky mud, much to the amusement of Wild Bill Hickock. The moral I drew from this scene is that crinoline dresses aren’t really suitable for the outdoor life. Which of course begs the question, just what is appropriate outdoor attire? Well, jeans certainly aren’t recommended. Once denim gets wet it stays wet, and wet clothes can lead to problems of heat loss and chafing, neither of which is much fun. I always wear walking trousers when out in the wild. They’re not waterproof by any means, but they do dry remarkably quickly once the rain stops or I cease falling into rivers. Stout boots are a necessity, and if they have good ankle support then so much the better. On the head, a hat. Being averse to ‘hat hair’ I’ve always shied away from wearing hats. However, I recently discovered that red-raw ears are even less attractive than the very worst ‘hat hair’, so a hat has now become a vital part of my kit. Rather bizarrely, no matter how hirsute a person is, the covering of hair on the head is too thin to be effective as heat insulation. So bang goes my excuse for not getting a haircut. The most important part of the body to keep warm after the head is the torso. All the major organs of the body, except the brain, are located there and let me tell you that the last thing you want is a cold spleen. There are two solutions to keep your spleen (and all the other bits and pieces in your midriff) warm. The first solution is to use a ‘layered’ approach whereby (as the name suggests) a number of layers of clothing are worn. The first (or base) layer should be made of a thin material to wick perspiration away from the body. The next few layers should be wool or fleece to trap the body’s heat and keep it where it is most needed. And then finally either a waterproof layer or at the very least a layer with good wind-stopping properties to stop cold air from outside getting in. The second solution (and the one that I prefer) is the ‘all-in-one’ approach in which the various properties of the layering system (perspiration wicking, insulation and wind-stopping) are combined into one snug-fitting garment. The jacket I use is manufactured by Buffalo, though similar tops are made by other manufacturers. The only drawback I’ve discovered so far, is that without regular washing the jacket starts to smell like a buffalo. Finally, gloves. I have several pairs for different conditions, from fingerless mittens (yes, such things do exist) to thick, padded gloves for the depths of winter. My advice with gloves is to experiment and see what works best for you. The important thing is not to lose any digits to frostbite during this empirical process. That’s it for now, except to say…Just remember, take care, be safe, be warm…To catch hypothermia just isn’t good form…Hmmm, do you know something, I think I can feel a song coming on! § With the honourable exception of ‘The Sound of Music’. Who could fail to be enthralled by the suffocating sense of impending doom as Austrian political freedom gives way to enforced Anschluss with fascist Germany? Or, of course, the sight of Julie Andrews in a wimple?

I’m happy to say I’ve tried something new, & it worked! My new picture titled “Safety First” Started out as any other picture from a shoot would. Setup, take a ton of pics, weed out the blurry ones, You know the routine. What’s different is with this picture I decided to completely desaturate the image & adjust the black & white tones only. Then I colored it in photoshop! I used to think that a black and white photo that’s been colorized would look like those cheezy “old-timey” recolored photos with the soft pastel-like hues. Well I was WRONG! I spent quite a few hours masking off areas, coloring them, adding adjustment layers, erasing parts of layers, etc… & I must say, I’m quit pleased with the result!

Attention to my Aussie friends here on redb…
Attention to my Aussie friends here on redbubble. What does the phrase “Human Rights” mean to you? I recently attended a round-table discussion and workshop with a Human Rights consultation group, something which motivated and inspired me to think more about what Human Rights means for me as an individual, and for the future of my children and all Australians. I thought I would share this information as it effects all Australians and I know there are so many of you here on redbubble who think deeply and care about our rights as individuals, as Australians and as part of a global community. Submissions are being called for from people across Australia and can be emailed or posted in until 9th June 2009. So please consider checking out this website Take a moment to read and reflect upon the three questions asked there (and summarized below), and having a say on the future protection and acknowledgement of our rights. / The National Human Rights Consultation provides the opportunity for you to share your views on human rights. The Consultation is run by an independent Committee. The Committee is supported by a Secretariat in the Attorney-General’s Department. / The Consultation is a chance to hear people’s ideas about human rights and talk about ways to protect and promote human rights in the future. / Key Consultation Questions / • Which human rights and responsibilities should be protected and promoted? / There are different types of human rights – which ones are important to you? Rights protecting individuals from the abuse or misuse of power by authorities? Rights to access services like legal counsel or housing? Rights to maintain or conserve cultural identities or languages? Rights in the workplace such as striking or collective bargaining? Some rights can be seen to intrude on other rights (for example a common debate is between “the right to life” and “a woman’s right to choose”). Which rights should prevail when there is a tension? / • Are human rights sufficiently protected and promoted? / Sometimes we don’t think of our everyday problems as human rights problems. Do you have any personal experience where human rights haven’t been or aren’t protected? Do you know someone who has had a human rights problem? Do you live in a community where there are human rights problems? For example, do you know of a situation where people have had their access to education or healthcare limited on the basis of their age or a disability? Do you know of a situation in Australia where there has been no effective solution to a human rights problem? Do you know how human rights are currently protected in Australia? And how this compares to other countries? / • How could Australia better protect and promote human rights? / The Committee is considering: - a legal framework to protect human rights (or Human Rights Act) / - Parliament voluntarily respecting human rights / - human rights awareness campaigns You can share your views by making a written submission either online or by post before the 9th June 2009. / Your views and ideas will be documented in a report to the Government. The Government will then consider the report which will help the development of future human rights policy for Australia. For more information please go to this site THANK YOU!

I’m receiving scam emails more and more (now on a weekly basis) and I’m hearing about others being ripped off by low life predators on the internet! It makes me so upset that there’s so many horrible people out there that have no conscience when it comes to taking advantage of others. These con artists are mainly praying on the elderly and those that have little internet experience and sadly they’re getting away with it all the time and making a lot of money. So I’ve decided I want to help to try to spread the word about what I’ve learned over my years with my ebay business. (Many of you probably already know this… but if not.. please take careful note for the safety of your money). Let’s not let these a-holes keep getting away with it. Tell everybody (especially your folks and/or grandparents!) Please excuse the Upper Case Sentences.. it’s not me shouting.. its just so the main points show clearly. MOST IMPORTANT POINTS NEVER USE WESTERN UNION (OR ANY OTHER MONEYGRAM SERVICES) FOR ANY PURCHASES. / ♦ Even if you speak to the person on the phone or you meet them… they can still be a con. There is no way to track the person or get your money back when using these services. (Only use moneygrams & money orders for trusted friends and family. If sending a post office money order always make sure it’s by registered mail). NEVER* EVER GO TO A SECURE WEB PAGE VIA AN EMAIL LINK! / ♦ Link is a clickable underlined text or picture that automatically opens a website. / ♦ A Secure web page is any page that requires your ID and/or password. / / ALWAYS GO TO YOUR INTERNET BANKING, PAYPAL, ETC THROUGH YOUR INTERNET FAVOURITES OR BY TYPING THE WEBSITE ADDRESS / ♦ Banks & Paypal will NEVER send you an email asking you to change, check or do anything to your online account! So NEVER ever go to a bank or merchant account through a link in an email… no matter what the email says! (I’ve seen many emails of late from supposed banks that show my full name and reads that there’s a problem with my account and please go here to fix it – I checked them all out and they’re links to fake scam pages!). ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE TYPING PASSWORDS TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON A SECURE WEBSITE (I’ve shown how to know for sure it’s a secure website further below). ALWAYS BE WARY OF AND QUESTION EMAILS PLEASE REMEMBER the scam emails can seem extremely convincing and the websites they send you to may look exactly the same as the real websites. (hence why you need to make sure it’s a secure page before entering passwords). There’s scammers out there that copy bank web site pages and merchant accounts down to the tiniest details. So nearly anyone looking at it would never know it’s a fake. So we all need to start being wary all the time when it comes to dealing with money over the internet. The scammers will write you an extremely good and convincing email (remember they can look exactly like the real thing) with a reason for you needing to go to their fake site (they’ll even go so low as saying you’ve won or received free money somehow). They do this so you’ll go to their fake site and enter your ID and password. Once you’ve entered your details they’ve recorded it and then all they have to do is go to the proper bank/company and put in your password and ID to get full access to your accounts. This is why it’s SO important to be very careful!! ►►►Get into the habit of ALWAYS checking for the following to make sure it’s a SECURE website before you enter a password or credit card details etc. MAKE SURE THAT THE FIRST PART OF THE INTERNET ADDDRESS READS – https (SEE EXAMPLES BELOW) / ♦ Any other normal website will have just http at the beginning of the web address. The S at the end means it’s a safe and secure site (companies need to pay money and give heaps of information for that S to appear on their website address). ► / OR / ► LOOK FOR A GRAPHIC/PICTURE OF A PADLOCK SHOWN IN YOUR INTERNET BROWSER EDGE. ~ (SEE EXAMPLES BELOW) / ♦ Look in the lower right corner of your browser window’s status bar if you’re on a PC. On a Mac, you might need to look in the upper right corner. Most browsers display a padlock to show that the page you are on is secure. Holding your mouse over the padlock will usually show a simple message about security. * ► / ► / ► REMEMBER ►If it seems too good to be true then chances are extremely high that it is (when in doubt about something being a scam… do a google search about it and see if there’s others that have been scammed before). ►► When it comes to money on the internet… always..always…always… be wary. ►►► Never jump quickly into decisions when it comes to spending alot of money through the internet before researching as much as possible first. I don’t want this to turn anyone off from spending money on the internet… cause it’s a wonderful world of new opportunities but I just want everybody to be extra extra careful and always have your ‘wary’ antenna up! :) And Red Bubble is definitely a very safe site :). Happy and Safe web surfing. / Pip ♥ * / HERE’S THE MAIN POINTS AGAIN IN ORDER FOR EASY REFERRAL. NEVER* USE WESTERN UNION (OR ANY OTHER MONEYGRAM SERVICES) FOR ANY PURCHASES. NEVER EVER GO TO A SECURE WEBSITE VIA AN EMAIL LINK! ALWAYS BE WARY OF, AND QUESTION EMAILS!! ANYTIME YOU’RE GOING TO A SITE THAT DEALS WITH YOUR PASSWORDS TO MONEY OR YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS ETC. (ESPECIALLY YOUR BANK OR PAYPAL ACCOUNTS) MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THOSE WEBSITES VIA YOUR INTERNET FAVOURITES OR BY TYPING THE WEBSITE ADDRESS. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE TYPING ID’S AND PASSWORDS TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON A SECURE WEBSITE (check there’s a https and a picture of a padlock in your browser)

this picture, “They Did Everything To Try Not To Fall Apart… II” by dragonflyer, really truly hit home for me. here’s why: my best friend has a terrible home life…like her mom’s boyfriends (which are different everyday) abuse her both sexually and physically, so thats what had happened one day…and she laced 15 safety pins deep through her left arm. she finally showed them to me after much coxing…they were killing her, she was in so much pain…i told her to take them out. i never left her side while she removed them…her hands were shaking so so bad she could barely even the pins still let alone undo the clasps and remove them. i felt terrible…i just, i wanted to be able to make everything better for her, to love her and show her what real love is…but, it’s like there was nothing i could do…so i stood there and watched her rip them out of her arm, throw them accross the bathroom and bleed out in the sink. tried to offer assistance but it’d probably just make it worse. i felt so helpless…all i really wanted to do, and all i still realy only want to do, is to hold her forever a love more than shes ever been loved before, give her all the care and love that she honestly deserves, and replace the love and joy that the bastards before me have so carelessly ripped out of her tender soul. / i love her so much. a great picture might i add…check it out.

(This is not written by me) The Penis, hereby request a raise in salary for the following reasons: / I do physical labor. / I work at great depths. / I plunge headfirst into everything I do. / I do not get weekends or public holidays off. / I work in a damp environment. / I work in a dark workplace that has poor ventilation. / I work in high temperatures. / My work exposes me to contagious diseases. Sincerely, / P. Niss The Response Dear Penis: / After assessing your request, and considering the arguments you have / raised, the administration rejects your request for the following reasons: / You do not work 8 hours straight. / You fall asleep after brief work periods. / You do not always follow the orders of the management team. You do not / stay in your designated area and are often seen visiting other locations. / You do not take initiative – you need to be pressured and stimulated in / order to start working. You leave the workplace rather messy at the end / of your shift. You don’t always observe necessary safety regulations, such as / wearing the correct protective clothing. / You will retire well before you are 65. / You are unable to work double shifts. / You sometimes leave your designated work area before you have completed / the assigned task.. / And if that were not all, you have been seen constantly entering and / exiting the workplace carrying two suspicious-looking bags. Sincerely, / V. Gina

Hello Dear RB Folks, I am wondering when the button was installed to “share” images through Facebook and Twitter? I am rather alarmed by this installation as this is the “option” that destroyed the artistic merit of DeviantArt, ruining the site and turning it into a mecca for “porn seekers” etc. DA is now a vast wasteland of lurkers, perverts and not something that can be recovered. I am selective in the imagery I post here and am not ashamed of any images but I do this because the demographic here is art and not nudity oriented. I do not want to see this site turn into another DeviantArt style fiasco. If anyone can advise me if the “share” feature can be turned off please do as I would like to retain the integrity of my work and it is not intended for the Facebook or Twitter crowd or distribution via either of those sites. If it was I would be there already with the same images. Is there anyone I can contact in mamagement to address this? Once again this “option” destroyed the community feel of DA and I dont want to see it here. You can reference my earliest journals to read of that experience and there is a “group” of DA refugees here on RB for that very reason. Please advise as an option like this has serious potential to compromise the safety and self imposed anonymity of someone like myself.

As we all know, carjacking is rife at the moment and there are always new ways of doing it. I received this from an official source today and wanted to share it with you all in the hope that it saves someone from a traumatising experience. It’s NOT a hoax. / Remember never to leave your keys in the ignition, take your bag out of the car and use some common sense, especially during these dark winter months. / Sadly, carjacking is being seen as a ‘trendy’ crime and it’s becoming more popular. / I have a personal alarm in my glovebox and never take any chances but then again, the personal safety training I’ve done taught me well….lol…. / Seriously though, here’s the information. Please pass it on to others and stay safe. Just recently a woman was carjacked, got caught between the front wheels and is now in a wheelchair, and that’s a sad fact….. NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKINGS (NOT A JOKE) / Heads up everyone! Please, keep this circulating. You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine put it into reverse. When you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you stop and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically run you over as they speed off in your car. / And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. / So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised! / BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED. / If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, lock your doors and just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women. / A purse contains all kinds of personal information and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands.

What is creative commons, the licenses and how do you go about protecting your artwork from theft. When uploading or placing your artwork up on the wide-world-of-web there is always the risk that someone will steal your artwork and claim it as their own, sell it or display it against your wishes. This violates your rights as an artist. / So what can you do to protect yourself? Be informed!! That is one of the key factors of art protection. Know your rights and follow precautionary measures. Creative Commons is a website that is dedicated to informing and providing registration of copyright to artists who use the internet to promote their artworks. There are six creative commons licenses that are available for registration of your artwork, via the creative commons website Attribution This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution. Attribution Share Alike This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use. Attribution No Derivatives This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you. Attribution Non-Commercial This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms. Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature. Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the “free advertising” license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially. Creative commons licensing is free, but the website will no chase up any legal action for stolen artwork. That is left solely to the artists discretion and purse. But it is a legal way to prove ownership of artworks for proof in a court of law. Watermarking your artworks is another way to protect your artworks from theft. With your name/artist name and website or a large C for copyright placed in the center of the artwork it makes art theft almost impossible. The removal of the watermark is laborious and in a lot of cases cannot be removed without destroying the artwork itself. Choose your Artist websites carefully!! There are websites out there that offer a protective clear covering to inhibit right clicking and saving. It is not fool proof, but it GREATLY reduces the risk of art theft. With Photoshop you can download a program and register with Adobe to have your artworks encoded with your information. Any theft of artworks can be lodged with Adobe and the artworks cannot be tampered with without your code? This method dose cost money. There are other copyright sites that you can register your artworks with, many of them require a fee. So once again, be informed. Choose your method/s of protection and you will reduced the risk of art theft!!
