This painting depicts beloved Brighid, Celtic goddess and saint, who walks the land, on the eve of Imbolc, February 1st. Its still bitterly cold but the light has returned, and the people know spring is on its way. Ewes are dropping their lambs, and soon the boring diet of old root vegetables will be enhanced with the addition of dairy products, and farmers begin preparing the fields. On Imbolc Brighid walked the countryside, passing through the communities along her way. Outside their doors people left offerings of milk, cloth, and food for her to partake of and bless. Brigit’s crosses (originally symbolizing the four elements and four directions, but later given Christian significance) and corn dollies were made, and local rituals followed. Every community had its own manner of celebrating. Goddess Brighid was associated with blacksmiths, poetry, fertility, fire, milk, sheep, white cattle, boars and swans, but most of all she had the mother goddess’s compassion. Here Ive portrayed her hair of flame and gown flowing in the bitter winter winds. She walks a remote field, blessing it for the coming season. The tree of life grows in this field, symbolizing spring and the new life that will soon be abundant. Text and image copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. Please don’t use without written permission.

Oil on canvas 61 X 61 cm. Completed April 2008. For more information or to purchase prints please visit: / www.RainbowPathArtStudio.com “All living beings have the Buddha nature and can become Buddhas” – Buddha Buddha Within illustrates the story of personal awakening. My understanding of the personal awakening process is that when undergoing the final awakening stage, the kundalini (rainbow serpent) becomes an intense fire (red/orange beside the tree trunk) shooting through the spine engulfing the body. The energy (green vortexes) required is enormous. As the kundalini reaches the crown chakra, it fully opens and all earthly limitations drop away. This being is no longer tied to a religion or faith but now embraces them all as represented by the sacred symbols in the tree. The consciousness now resides in the higher self and is one with the universe and all that is. When the transformation is complete sonic waves (the four vertical crystalline waves) travel out into the universe to let all of creation know of the grace that has taken place. All life is naturally drawn to the radiant and divine being that has become pure Buddha consciousness (centre). At each of the chakra points on the Buddha is a Swarovsky crystal in the relevant chakra colour. Crystal magnifies the properties of the chakra energy. / Buddha Within is divided into four quadrants (earth, fire, water, air) and the five elements including precious metals (bottom corners). The red veins dividing the quadrants represent the lower dimension (inner earth). The higher dimension is represented by the white equilateral triangle. If you look closely, you can see the texture of the underlying branches in the tree. These were meticulous painted before adding the covering of leaves. The tree must be complete in the physical, in order to emit the complete energy of the life form. Imbibed in the painting is sand from a sand mandala created by Gyuto Monks. They had spent a week painstakingly building an exquisite sand mandala. Upon its completion the mandala was ceremonially deconstructed and the sand poured into the local river for healing, accompanied by prayer and the blasting of Tibetan ceremonial horns. Some of the sand is held back and distributed to those who attend the ceremony: it holds sacred healing properties. I used some of the sand from this mandala, mixing it in the purple paint used for the crown charka encircling the white triangle and Buddha. Buddha Within is the third in a series and preceded by The Dream and The Awakening.

The human sat alone, head hanging down. / Tears fell silently. / They felt so empty, even the pain was a welcome embrace, so when a hand touched upon their shoulder they did not have the strength to look up. “Go away!” / said the human, not even knowing what they wanted. / “I want to be left alone….I ….” / Yet all the while thinking / “Please don’t go away, I don’t want to be alone” / but when they glanced up, there was no one there, just a shift in the light and the hint of warmth on the air. The Angel spoke from nowhere, and everywhere. You thought your love would last forever… / But it did not. / You thought that fire in your heart would never fade, / But it slowly died. / You thought that the fire in the other’s eyes would never grow dim, yet it suddenly burned out…and was gone. / How cheated you feel – What a waste! You grieve, you hurt – oh! how you hurt for all you feel you have lost. / It seems the warmth, the light, the love has gone… / That nothing is left…. But remember this… True love knows three flames – / It is a sacred trinity. When two flames unite, they create a third flame that burns more brightly than both that created it. / This mysterious alchemy is of another dimension. / It cannot be seen with human eyes, it cannot be touched with human hands, but sometimes, if you are quiet and still and truly believe, it can be felt with the human heart. / Once lit, this flame burns forever. / It cannot be measured or contained in human terms. / Yet long after those two souls have burned themselves out, when time and reason and humanity have worn down the passion of their union, or regardless, their journey calls them onto different paths, / The fire of their creation remains, / A light that shines eternally / In a dark and longing world. Love may be over / In your eyes / But in the eyes of the universe, / What your love created / What your heart set free, / Will live on, / A celebration of what once was and will always be. True love creates three flames – / And one will burn forever. (This image was created to inject some warmth and hope back into the lives of two dear friends who are hurting right now….their own flames have died down, leaving them cold, shattered and grieving. To all who hurt this way, I know only too well how cold it can be….. may the energy of this image bring back a little of what you need to believe again…..love xoxox)

Under the sight of the planets, life continues on the wheel of evolution. Round and round… From the cells of this seed head, shall fall the next sacred water lily seeds that will sink into the muck far below and struggle to grow until they return to the light. To me religion shoulden’t be about big, showey buildings and being preached too.I prefer a more natural approach ””The Kingdom of Heaven is inside you and all around you Split a piece of wood, and I am there Lift a stone and there you will find me” (interior shot at St,Conan’s Kirk on the shores of Loch Awe, Scotland)

The Oak tree has been used as a sacred symbol throughout many different cultures and religions. Oak trees were sacred to the Celts. They represented the centre of the world. The Celtic name for oak is daur, and is the origin of the word door. The root of the oak tree was literally the doorway to the Otherworld, the realm of Faery. The word Druid, is combined from the words for oak and wise – a Druid was one who was “Oak Wise,” meaning learned in Tree magic and guardian or the doorway. The Oak is also significant in many other cultures and is commonly used as a symbol of strength and endurance. The Oak is the National Symbol of many countries including England, Wales, France, Germany and the United States. In Classical mythology the oak was a symbol of Zeus and his sacred tree. In the Bible, Joshua erects a stone under an oak tree as the first covenant of the Lord (Josh. 24.25-7). The Oak tree is traditionally sacred to Serbs and is widely used on national and regional symbols both old and new. I like to think that the Oak, and trees in general, are something that ties us all together, no matter what religion we believe, and it is only through our own efforts and concern that trees will remain for future generations to enjoy. Trees are not only significant to people they are imperative for bird life. I am tired of seeing beautiful trees destroyed all in the name of progress and profit. What will be left for us to profit from when all the trees and birds are gone? There is a reason that trees are sacred, perhaps we need to go back and remember the basics: Trees = Oxygen = Life.

The Gyoto Monks of Tibet are an often seen sight at many cultural events in the Byron Bay region. Seen here laughing, this particular monk escaped Tibet into India 50 years ago with His Holiness, The Dali Lama. His trademark expression and enjoying tea and biscuit, the joke is enjoyed by all at the table.
