Sabre was an Alsatian puppy at the time of this photo (about 20 years ago) who belonged to someone I worked for in Cornwall. He was always full of fun and mischief and good company. Again the shot was taken on my Canon AE1 35mm camera and scanned into the computer. Korea 1953
by dummySgt. Miller, (Dummy to you Red Bubblers) . I have strapped the Pilot in and the Auxillary Power Unit is plugged in ready to start the aircraft. This power unit will turn a starter-generator and at 10% RPM the starter becomes a generator and the APU can be unplugged. The Pilot will take the power to Idle percent and let the engine stabilize. Then carefully you can go to 100% RPM watching the Tail Pipe Temperature to avoid a warm start or hot start. Then you are on your way to Meet Russian Migs while escorting B-29s on bombing runs. Old fashioned compared to today’s air wars but was very effective at the time.

He said, “We’ll take us into town, lay our money down / I’ll bring you to the sweetest thing that grows / Because the fairest ones in sight are bloomin’ every night at a tavern / Called the Sabre and the Rose.” We swang into the saddle slick as breathing / And slapped ‘em once for pleasure with the reins / The horses snorted frosty in the moonlight / Somethin’ dark was singing in my veins / Older than the voices in my brain. He said, “This place you’re gonna see is where they live and breathe / And sink down a little bit deeper every day / And sometimes at night, when the wind is runnin’ right, / You can hear it suckin’ thirty miles away” Then the light was crimson and I found her, / All naked and eternal and insane / Sacred as the mysteries around her like a veil / Nothin’ but her prison was profane / All we had in common was our chains. This is a North American F86A Sabre, built in 1948, but now on the UK civil aircraft register as G-SABR. / It is seen here rotating on take off for its display at Kemble Air Day 2008, shimmering behind the heat haze from the runway and its own jet exhaust gases. / I decided to edit the image to make it more reminiscent of its heyday – it seemed to suit it better – perhaps it could be departing for a sortie in Korea for example! I will be uploading some more images of this aircraft, to show how it looks now. /

This is the cover for the book “Korean Air War”. This is my Aircraft in Korea 1952-1953 I was crew chief. My photo is the one without a hat. I am standing next to my Pilot Maynard Stogdill. The name of the plane is “GWENNY”. She flew a lot of mlissions over North Korea and saw a lot of migs. This was the 334th Fighter Inteceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, 4th Fighter Wing.

Don Miller with “Time” “Life” on his jeep. Behind him is group shot of the base Photographers and an F-86 Sabre Jet. Don Miller later on worked for Time-Life as a war photographer. His wishes came true. He is still living in NYC, NY..He is also a great artist.. His photos at Kimpo were USAF Official Photos and he photographed a few of the ones I have a copy of.

Pilots outside alert shack on 5 minute alert. There were 4 pilots in the aircraft on 3 minute alert. This meant wheels up in 3 minutes. This is the 334th fighter interceptor squadron’s turn to stay. We got the duty every third day. These pilots were there when the North Korean flew the mig 15 in under radar behing some other aircraft that were landing. He defected to the United States. Changed his name and went to the Univ of Missouri gratis of the US. Also, I think he receive a tidy sum of money. He wrote a book and I don’t remember the name of it.

THIS F-86 SABRE WAS THE FIRST AMERICAN JET TO GO TOE TO TOE WITH THE RUSSIAN MIGS DURING THE KOREAN CONFLICT. I DON’T MEAN THIS JET EXACTLY, BUT THIS MODEL JET. AS WITH THIS JET AND MOST OTHERS SINCE THEN, AMERICA HAS MANAGED TO CONTROL THE SKIES OVER ALL OF IT’S CONFLICTS SINCE.
