  • Langfords Store – Bainham / Historic General Store and Post Office, located in the beautiful Aorere Valley, the Gateway to the Heaphy Track, South Island New Zealand. / From toffee to t-shirts Storekeeping was no new venture for Eleanor, wife of Edward Bates Langford, when Langford’s Store opened in 1928. Prior to their 1900 Boxing Day marriage she had worked in her parent’s ‘Waimea Road tuck shop’ for Nelson College. / When E.B.L. relinquished dairy farming to become Postmaster in 1924 and began selling stationery to go with the stamps, he invested in a printing press, while Eleanor sold her famous homemade toffee. After trying unsuccessfully to persuade the Government to finance a Post Office to replace the locally-owned building, he turned his attention to retailing. / Lorna Langford began working for her grandfather in 1947, in the days of tinned loose biscuits and vinegar in wooden casks. She continued to work in the store until 2008, when Sukhita Langford took on the position of Storekeeper and Postmistress. Today’s shopper is likely to be a Heaphy Track tramper wanting insect repellent or postcards for home. / Enjoy delicious tea and coffee served with sublime sweet treats whilst you write a postcard home and soak up the sunshine and surrounding scenery. / Open: / 10am – 6pm Mon to Fri (during winter months) / 8am – 6pm Mon to Sun (during summer months / This image was taken on film and reworked in PS. / Enjoy /

  • ARCHITECTURE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT / Architecture is to do with the designing of buildings and structures, but in its broader meaning it also includes the design of our complete built environment. It can be found in outback areas, on mountain peaks, almost anywhere on the land, even on the sea in the form of oil rigs and it surrounds us in our places of abode. We tend to take it for granted and complain when its appeareance doesn’t suit our taste. Architecture provides us with shelter, places to work, gives us points of reference in our urban wilderness, but most important of all, it provides a fundamental basis for the way we live. Architecture is ephemeral, can be a thing of great beauty, and its elements can be pillaged and used as building blocks by successive generations. Past civilizations are often known through their achievements in architecture and certain works have become cultural, political and artistic icons. Presumably a family once lived in this little house at Fernie, British Columbia. It now stands derelict and isolated, yet it seems to exist as a monument to the toil of hard working rural people anywhere. The image was captured during summer 2008 towards the end of a photographic journey through the Canadian Rockies. Thanks for taking the time to view my photos and feel free to comment. You are welcome to visit my photography website My most recent publication ‘ARCHITECTURE WITH CHARACTER’ includes images of this rural house. Click on image below for a preview.

  • An abandoned cottage sits decaying and un-loved, amongst the flowers and weeds which now encroach upon the front door. I spotted this while taking a walk through the woodlands behind Armadale castle, on the Sleat of the Isle of Skye. I peered through the open door, and saw that the very narrow, and steep wooden steps leading to the upstairs, were very worn, which indicated that a long time ago, maybe a large family dwelled within, maybe several generations. The rooms were tiny, and very dark within. / My imagination ran riot thinking about the folk of days gone by and how they lived ! / Sadly, it is in such a dangerous state of decay that it is not safe to explore the interior. / Maybe my image will help this abandoned home live on a little longer ? Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, RAW file processed in Photoshop CS3, then I applied the Orton Effect. /

  • When one starts to really look at a wall like this, all the stories and changes, repairs and modifications, start to reveal themselves. I look at this wall 3 days a week at least and sometimes more, when I drive down the lane on the way out from where I park my car at work. Every time, a different aspect of a seemingly simple and unremarkable wall catches my eye. I love this wall! / For a different image of this wall click here Featured in ‘Wall of the World’, November 2009 Part of the side wall of the Exchange Hotel, Pingelly Western Australia.
