  • Taken at the Adelaide Zoo, South Australia. This image featured in I Love Birds in September 2009. Thanks so much!

  • When I took this photo, I had a split second to do so and did not have time to mentally realize that a vertical shot would have been better. I’ve wondered for a while how I could improve this image. Then, a photo rater named Eyal Nahmias suggested adding layers to give the bluebird more head room. I took his advice and came up with this newly-recreated version of Bluebird with Skink. I think it gives the image a fresh, new, more spacious look. Hope you like it.

  • Typical autumn scene early morning in Rivington Lancashire England.

  • This orange Gerber daisy on an orange/white background reminds me of Halloween, pumpkins, football season and homecoming corsages, and the bright colors of fall foliage.

  • I was scoping out birds on this beautiful afternoon in autumn but didn’t see a single one. I aimed at the trees instead and started photographing colorful leaves. I thought this single, jagged leaf against a sea of its blurred counterparts was rather striking.

  • An altered version of my “Autumn Leaves and Berries” image – texture by Bea Pierce . Original image

  • This male Eastern bluebird made numerous trips to the nesting box during the late afternoon hours while Mama Bluebird kept close watch over the newly hatched babies inside the nest. Each hunting excursion lasted about fifteen or twenty minutes, and he’d always return with a tasty tidbit for the little ones in the nest. In this photo, he gave me a stern look before delivering a caterpillar to the awaiting babies that have voracious appetites. As the babies mature, Mama will be more active in the hunting process as the chicks demand more food and space becomes too crowded for her to remain inside the box with the growing young ones. It’s a joy to watch the bluebird family in their busy lives.

  • Produced in Painter X from a Photoshop composite. Only four trees now but when I started this there were five. I didn’t like the composition with the fifth tree in place so I turned off that layer.
