  • This is a collaboration piece I did with the very talented photographer/artist lance leopold. I approached Lance last week about his awesome piece titled “Restless Prisoner”. I thought this was the most stunning photo from the moment I saw it, a couple of months ago! This is a combination of two photos. The background photo is my shot of an Anna Ruby Falls titled “One With Nature”. I’ve used PS to merge the two photos, did some dodge work, cropping and some hue adjustments. The inspiration for this piece came from Lance’s beautiful photo and the title for his piece. I just thought it would be nice if only in my artwork, to release this beautiful animal in a place he might call home. / ; / / I hope you like it Lance :-) I’d like to thank EGardner for identifying this beautiful cat. He’s a Serval. Thank you so much Erin!! :-)) Some Info: / is a medium-sized African wild cat. It is closely related to the African Golden Cat and the Caracal. The length is 85 cm (34 in), plus 40 cm (16 in) of tail, and the shoulder height is about 53 cm (21 in). Weight can range from 9 to 20 kg (20-44 lbs). Life expectancy is about 12-20 years. It is a slender animal, with long legs and a fairly short tail. The tall, oval ears are set close together. The pattern of the fur is variable. Usually, the Serval is boldly spotted black on tawny. The “servaline” form has much smaller, freckled spots. In addition, melanism is known to exist in this species, giving a similar appearance to the black panther. White servals are white with silvery grey spots and have only occurred in captivity. Its main habitat is the savanna, although melanistic individuals are more usually found in mountainous areas. The Serval needs watercourses within its territory, so it does not live in semi-deserts or dry steppes. It is able to climb and swim, but seldom does so. It has now dwindled in numbers due to human population taking over its habitat and also hunting its pelt. It is protected in most countries. The Serval is listed in CITES Appendix 2, indicating that it is “not necessarily now threatened with extinction but that may become so unless trade is closely controlled.

  • PAX Hack

    RedBubble’s newly-announced PAX...

RedBubble’s newly-announced PAX is pretty cool. Well, no, that’s not true, it’s very cool. But it’s got a problem. The problem is that, with over 16,000 works in the mosaic, you’ve got a hell of a time seeing if any of your works are in there. Now, sure, you could sit down and just wander around it, keeping an eye out for your own stuff and being amazed at some of the works that are in there, but that could take forever. Besides, you can never be sure that you’ve found all of them (or be sure that you’ve confirmed that you’ve got none in there). And then I noticed that the full list of all the works in the mosaic was available “under the hood” (anyone with a reasonable knowledge of web development should be able to find that file). The file itself is just some Javascript code. So, I got to thinking, here’s a file that contains a list of image IDs of every work in the mosaic. I’ve got a list of all my works on RedBubble thanks to a tool I wrote a while back. If I just extract the two ID lists, take the intersection of those two lists, I’ll have a list of all of my works in PAX. So, a quick bit of ruby hacking later and I had findPAXworks up and running. And a few seconds later I had a full list of all of my works that appear in there. Well, I say “all”, there’s only the two, and it’s the two that I expected: / Chaos / Quite a Contrast Now I can go and enjoy wandering around the mosaic without being preoccupied with looking for my own works. ;)
