The fascinating geothermal wonderland, Rotorua, New Zealand :)) / June 2008 The milky colour of the water of Sulphur Bay is caused by particles of sulphur being suspended in the water. This sulphur has been produced by hydrogen sulphide gas rising from the lake. / The smells of Sulphur Bay and Lake Rotorua are from sulphurous gases belched from the depths of the Earth and resemble rotten eggs !! / Steam and gases can be heard bubbling and roaring to the surface through vents and pools :)) WARNING / ©2008 Globalphotos All rights reserved. / All photographs, text and images by Globalphotos are the exclusive property of Globalphotos – protected under Australian and international copyright laws. / These images may not be reproduced, copied or manipulated without written permission. / No use for Public Domain. / Use of any image for another photographic concept or illustration is a violation of copyright.

Taken at the thermal pools at Rotorua, New Zealand, with a title inspired by the wit of my girlfriend. It might look all magical and mystical with the steam rising from the mud pools, but my god – it smelled so bad there. It’s all sulphuric activity, so the smell of eggs was so strong it made my head pound. A great experience though, and definitely one I’d recommend to anyone going near Rotorua.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, near Rotorua New Zealand This is known as the Champagne Pool, due to the presence of carbon dioxide bubbles. For more information, see / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champagne_Pool For me one of the best shots I have ever taken, everything seemed to fall into place with this one.

Forestry worked felling trees found a nest with 2 eggs. Recognizing a Morepork nest they passed it on to conservation officers and they were confirmed as Ruru or Morepork eggs. From those eggs one hatched and that was Whisper, believed to be the first Morepork in 20 years to be hatched in captivity… here is the TV coverage Whisper got recently; tvnz.co.nz/view/video_popup_windows_skin/1570972 ignore the commercial at the start, once that has finished you may need to click the pause button then the play button if nothing is happening. The Wingspan Trust who are raising Whisper are about 10 minutes from where we live and we were lucky enough to see him/her (it’s not known yet) a few days before the TV story.

Pukeko’s in the wild Note that the female has her nose to the ground. Is she bored? eating? or using her beak for balance?

But only one and it must be fought over! This is quite sad actually. On Saturday night I fed the resident ducks on the lake, one in particular which was the youngest, and the friendliest. Kept tugging on my jeans for more food if I fed others – much like child would pull on his/her mothers skirts. It got more than it’s fair share of bread that night from me. The next morning, I was up at sunrise and looked for this little duck again, as it had so much personality for one so young. Nowhere to be seen, and definitely not with the others. On walking down the little beach, there it was floating in the lake minus it’s head. Something had got to it during the night. A few minutes later, the seagulls found it and such a raucous bunch fighting over it. But thats mother nature for you – survival of the fittest.

Beautiful underwater spring with clear cool, unpolluted, swift flowing water. this is the stream not far from the source that runs to the Lake. You can see how clear it is from the weed and the white pumice sand. Pristine NZ bush and and American Redwoods grace the sides, and you can walk through it.
