Rothko must have seen it from me… I recently had a look at what people admire at Tate- there is an exhibition of Rothko… I am not a fan… but saw the same composition painted by Rothko!
A fall scene with naked trees in acrylic and oil pastel on cardboard—part of a series.

acrylic. I pixelated a rothko to state the graphic arts of today is trying to make graphics into real tangible art when the real tangent is paint.. not imagery through technology.
Landscape inspired from Maryland’s Point Lookout area by the Chesapeake Bay area. / Acrylic and oil pastel. 32”X60” on canvas
a hole punched out of a slab of rusty steel found on a building site. It reminds me of Rothko’s work.
Oil on canvas – 20×16 This work was the direct result of my wife and I visiting the National Gallery of Art in DC to see some Rothkos. It was the not the first time, but it was when the “lights went on” for me and the power of his work as far as seeing it in real life. The quadrants that frame the cross were a deliberate attempt in trying to imagine/emulate what the process must have been like for Rothko (my all time favorite). So, this was kind of like a 5 year-old kid throwing a baseball to his dad and pretending that he is in the big leagues. That being said, it is a reflection from my heart concerning my faith. The over-thinned area in the top right quadrant symbolizes the crown of thorns from Matthew 27. The gradiant shadings are representations of the varies stages of blood that were shead that day. This is one is a departure from my main work, the majority of which use really vibrant colors. I’m a newb to RB and work full time, so will be trying to add more as time permits. Thanks for any comments. You can check out my other stuff in the mean time at http://www.rayschloss.com .

Autumn abstract, leaves on pavement, Port Clyde, Maine.
sun … sea … and then there’s that black thing
I am a devotee of the abstract expressionists and this particular image reminds me of the work of one of my heroes Mark Rothko. I took this shot of a water tank when adding to my collection of textures and overlays, however I think there’s a beauty that allows the image to stand on its own merits. Kurrajong NSW
Homage to Rothko…(my favorite painter) / /

I had a really strong urge to create a digital image very much like a Mark Rothko painting and here it is. I smudged and smeared the pigments present in a slide photograph of Sherwood Forest taken in the Autumn. The dark area at the bottom is pretty much left untouched and you can still pick out birch leaves caught by the warm setting sun. There is also some element of clouds present too. Although the Dark blue looks very unatural I had found a tiny speck of it and sort of stretched it out with the smudge tool. I was great fun to create. Maybe I’ll do some more soon
