This is one of my favorite shots of the whole trip. Not just as an image to view, but as being able to enjoy the process as well. I took this on Friday the 13th. We had just made it to the campsite earlier on in the afternoon and had finally gotten around to getting camp setup and were hanging out around the fire. The night was perfect, the stars were out, and the moon was nowhere to be found. So after everyone else had gone to bed, I loaded up into the trusty Montero and headed out to take some night shots. This one is by far and away my favorite of the group that night. The trip out to this location was part planning, part luck. Seeing as in order to get out there you have to go over some pretty tricky 4-wheel drive trails, that during the day look like what you might expect the surface of Mars to look like. This was no easy feat (But it was damn fun). Once I finally got out to this location about 20 minutes later, and parked the Montero on an insane incline, I setup the tripod, setup the composition the best I could with the flashlight, and started shooting. My first shot (which I will post later) was a 5 min test shot to make sure I had things lined up properly. After a few adjustments I started this shot. 30 minutes and a quick nap in the Montero with the heater running later I finally had this shot. Like I said, it’s one of my favorites of the trip, and I hope you like it as well.
the act of rotating as if on an axis; “the rotation of the dancer kept time with the music”
This is the first time I’ve tried a long exposure shot seriously. My last tries were for half a second during the day time. The silhouette was a man who walked into the shot less than a second before I pressed the shutter and then, miraculously, stayed absolutely still for the 4 seconds (when I say ‘long exposure’, it wasnt THAT long…but i still wanted the wheel to have visible spokes.) and then immediately after it had finished taking, disappeared into the crowds. Weird… The photo was taken in London, at the end of the London Boat Race. This image is used as the Experimental group logo for profiles. Oh, and Jonny watched.

It is a symbolic ritual through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the “perfect” (kemal). The aim is to abandon one’s nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to God and the music (hence the term sema), thinking about God and whirling which has been compared to the orbiting of the planets in the Solar System around the sun. As explained by Sufis: In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen’s camel’s hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. By removing his black cloak, he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God’s unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God’s beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God’s spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, “All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!”

Long exposure capturing the rotation of the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland – the world’s first revolving canal boat lift. It takes approximately 4 minutes to fully rotate and lifts boats up to the next level of the canal. An amazing piece of architechtural design and engineering, apparently it only takes the equivalent power of boiling a kettle to power each rotation. / * / / Location: Falkirk, Central Scotland / / Copyright © Donald Cameron 2009 / Monophotography.co.uk / /
