The Rook features prominently in folklore & is part of the crow family. Rooks are said to be able to forecast weather & to sense the approach of death. One folk-tale holds that rooks are responsible for escorting the souls of the virtuous dead to heaven. I myself just think it’s a lovely black bird.
Detail:
Is it a bat? No it’s a bird, a batty bird maybe, but a bird. Possibly the Rook with the highest IQ in the Rookery this morning… If I were a Rook, I’d definitely be that guy… :) Clonroche, County Wexford, early one morning before Sunrise in December. / Minimally processed RAW to jpeg conversion with Picasa 3.
“Crow Magic” depicts the significant place Crow (and Raven) hold in First Nations mythologies around the World. To some he is bringer of the first light of morning and the guardian at the gate as Light departs the World each night. He is a trickster, a jokester and magician, even a spokesperson for some. He is the conveyer of mysteries, his presence portends supernatural events and so on. Crow is sacred, Crow is handsome and more often than not, he is the bringer of much mischief! :o-) The background is a recent forest photograph taken in fog here on Vancouver Island. This art print is Skye’s most recent work of art paying tribute to this remarkable creature of flight. 25% of proceeds from all sales is donated to Wildlife Direct at: wildlifedirect.org, to help them protect other remarkable species around the World. Thank you for helping us to help this great organization.

Ranging in size from the relatively small pigeon-sized jackdaws (Eurasian and Daurian) to the Common Raven of the Holarctic region and Thick-billed Raven of the highlands of Ethiopia, the 40 or so members of this genus occur on all temperate continents (except South America) and several offshore and oceanic islands (including Hawaii). In the United States, the word “crow” is used to refer to the American Crow. The crow genus makes up a third of the species in the Corvidae family. Other corvids include rooks and jays. Crows appear to have evolved in Asia from the corvid stock, which had evolved in Australasia. A group of crows is called a “murder,” though this term usually appears in poetry rather than scientific contexts. / / / BIRDS I have subdivided this category into sections: follow the links and hit on exactly what fits you. The Black King’s Rook / Artist: Simon Sherry / Biography: Danny The Black King and his Bullrock The Bullrock, or King’s Rook, are massive creatures created by the Shaman to carry supplies and extra weapons for the Army of the Black Spear. Strong but limited in movement due to their sheer size, they are the product of a long extinct race of Pachyderm that was gene-spliced with the last single survivor of the Giant race dwelling in the Dark Cathedrals of the Shaman’s Apothecary. Only ever used for battle, Bullrocks are treated with special care during times of non-war. (Peace isn’t a word in the Black Spear dictionary) The King is often seen in their company feeding and grooming them exclusively. In fact, so special are these creatures in the eyes of their master, he commanded the Shaman to create creatures specifically engineered to tend to their pens. In turn, the King’s Shaman has found more than one way of repurposing the byproducts of such a massive lifeform.

The Striated Caracara or Johnny Rook (Phalcoboenus australis) as it is popularly known is considered to be one of the rarest raptors in the world. Its distribution is limited to the Falkland Islands and some islands off southern Tierra del Fuego only, During the late 1990’s, the species was estimated at only 500 breeding pairs. / The only recent information I can find (2008) is that the IUCN list it as Near Threatened due to its small population.

The White King’s Rook / Artist: LilyM / Biography: Danny The King’s Flank are guarded by a an ancient stone giant (Titan) that was summoned from sleep by the Scholars and practitioners of the University of the Gear. Over the years and with collaboration with the ancient rites, structures were able to be built upon the titan and secret instructions whispered through its thoughts to protect the King should the occasion arise. /
The Black Queen’s Rook (The Basilisk) / Artist: Simon Sherry / Biography: Danny Another giant mutant created by the Shaman, the Basilisk is charged with protecting the Black Queen. Like the Bullrock, the Basilisk is the product of gene splicing – in this instance dragon and giant. More intelligent than the King’s Rook and fiercely loyal to the Queen and King equally, the Basilisk is allowed to wander free on its own estate and hunt , train and care for itself. When entering the field of battle, it is usually accompanied by swarms of its parasitic minions, The Stain. /
The White King-Rook’s Pawn / Artist: LilyM / Biography: Danny Descendants of the original keepers of the Great rock Titan after it was tricked into the King’s service. / They eventually over time became the Titan’s people as opposed to it being their prisoner and become it’s protective army. / Due to this development the knowledge of the secret instructions to control the Titan are now held by the King for his protection against the Titan should it ever eventuate. The White Queen’s Rook / Artist: Sjem / Biography: Danny One of the White King’s great assets – even though he possesses a fallen Angel in his ranks was his belief that faith alone would not save his army and the art of both mechanoid and wizardry could always be relied upon to be great allies when administered carefully. / Hence the reason the king kept Universities that studied the mechanical and more unorthodox majical arts. / It was through these academies principled by the Queens Bishop that the flank engines were created. The Steam City / The Left flank that provides the Queen’s armies protection is a massive structure made of slick marble and iron making the structure unscaleable except from within. The ability to create what can only be described as a turret on wheels also provides a means to carry the food, supplies and weapons that a large army needs to conduct a battle of mythical proportions.
